OT: My (future niece) girlfriend's niece's birthday is next Saturday so we're doing a birthday lunch or whatever. Ashleigh is telling me what she is planning on getting Lorelei and then hops on over to the "and then I was going to put together a couple gift bags for her and Emma."

Hold up, I say. Its not Emma's birthday.

    "She's only 2."

    Ok...?

*insert back and forth on the merits of giving birthday gifts to kids when its not their birthdays and the overall merits of birthdays in general*

She contested that it was being fair to the other child(ren) even though its not their birthday. I told her that **** didn't happen with us and (left unsaid) creates an entitlement with the older child which is what has happened before on both sides of the family.

That's a bad road to travel down. It doesn't even make sense to me. I didn't know people did this.

Birthday presents when it's not your birthday?

      You gotta be kidding me.

Can't you teach the other kids to be happy for their friends/siblings when it's their day? That's a better lesson.

I have an aunt who does the exact same thing with my two younger cousins. The two are a year apart in age with a handful of months difference in birth date. Both receive a gift anytime a birthday rolls around. Not at all a parenting method I agree with, but it's certainly not the first time I've heard of parents doing this.

As both the eldest and middle child for my father and mother it didn't make sense to me either.

We actually had this happen with the first grandchild on my dad's side. My cousin would get presents on my other cousins' birthdays to "keep it fair."

As a middle child, its only fair to the eldest child.

Personally, it has nothing to do with "sheltering" them or keeping them innocent (I'd be inclined to argue it turns them into little mooching, greedy, entitled brats), but about learning how to not only realize its not all about you and celebrate the success of others.

I did this when I came home on leave, but it was only because I missed my niece's birthday and it was at my nephew's b'day party.

When I was younger like 8 or 9, My step brother was the same age as me, my little sister was 3 my little brother was two. For a couple years there when it was either me or my step brother's birthdays my dad would buy everyone gifts. I guess the younger ones were uncontrollably jealous and upset. Which I thought was odd at the time but I wasnt complaining. By the time the younger ones were in grade school it stopped. I was disappoint.

Chicago OS'ers, is gas still crazy expensive in Chicago? I haven't been there in like 5 or 6 years, but I remember it being considerably more expensive than in Minnesota. Planning a road trip to Chicago and I'm wondering if it's something I should keep in mind.

For comparison, gas has been hovering around $3.50 here.

So she's basically like Cartman where she has to get one birthday present for each one the other gets?

Before my brother started dating his wife, she had a 3-year-old that got presents when it was other kids' birthdays. She spoiled his *** big time. Kid would throw a fit when he didn't get a present on some other kid's birthday.

Still does it from time-to-time. He's 6 and whenever you have something, even something as small as a candy bar or a snack or whatever, he'll whine out, "Where's mine?!" He's gotten a lot better about it, but damn, it sure didn't help when he got presents because other kids got some at their own birthday party.

I wish I would have whined and asked my parents where is mines when it wasn't my birthday. My parents would have popped me dead in the mouth and told me to STFU, today isn't your birthday.

Kind of like the pre going into any store speech my parents gave me.:

Man, it is both frustrating and exhilarating trying to find evidence of fraud and money laundering in small businesses. Mostly frustrating because I just think the woman is a moron.

I work in business banking and I see it all the time but can never prove it for sure.

The good thing for us is we don't have to prove it, we can just choose not to do business with them any longer.
