    Re: Off Topic 2014

Called my internet provider for the third time last night.

The guy said apparently it's a networking issue that is going to take at least two months to fix.

So I've been paying for 75mbs for about 4 months now with getting anything over 20, averaging between 7-10 the last couple months.. The supervisor calling me today better give me an excuse not to switch to Comcast.

I hear nothing but bad about Comcast, but their 105mbs is a little cheaper then what I'm paying now for the 75 I'm not getting.

Then he married my great grandma and had two kids (one of which is my grandpa). Something happened in the 1930s when my grandpa was 5 and my great grandma took the kids and moved into her family's guest house. A year later, the great grandpa tracked them down. Shortly thereafter, all of my great grandma's relatives that were living on that property abandoned it. Then the entire property burned down, erasing all of my family's documents and history.

Then my great grandma took the kids and moved to the city, changed everyone's names, somehow got legal social security numbers and official documentation, and started a brand new family line away from my great grandpa.

We're still trying to piece together what happened to the first wife and what exactly happened that caused my great grandma to run away twice, and how she was able to pull off basically disappearing and creating new identities for her and her kids.
That's a fascinating story. I have been in an ancestry phase lately, and have found interesting family situations (nothing like yours) but really no way to find out "what really happened". Good luck to you and what you discover.

Thanks. As it turns out, the half-sister from my great grandpa's first marriage had a kid of her own and that child is alive and living like 15 minutes away from us, so I think we might go out and talk to her (we've already spoken to her a few times) to see if she can help with this puzzle of what happened to her grandma (the first wife that died at 27 years old), and perhaps whatever she might know about what happened in our particular family line (though I'm guessing she won't be able to help much with that).

Discovering is such a surreal feeling isn't it?

When my great great grandparents were married, they moved from Kansas to Oklahoma. She came from a well-to-do family, her father was an established judge; my gg grandfather, I have a feeling must have been a rascal. Anyway, they had two boys not far a part, and for some reason she left him, loaded her two boys (both under 2) in a buckboard wagon and went back to Kansas to her family. Nobody knows why she left him, only speculation. My great grandfather was raised by a step father and no contact with his biological father.

Recently, one of my second cousins completed a tree that took that line clear back to 1600s Sweden. What a surreal surprise that was. The surreal part is that I have never met this second cousin and stumbled upon this tree on Ancestry.com

And you've had this cousin living that close, that is surreal. I would be both excited and apprehensive.

I've received a few invites to go do New Year's things and my leading plan right now is bailing on everyone because bars are loud and crowded and I can't wear my comfortable pajamas there.

I'm basically a 40 year old man stuck having to deal with the social pressures of actually being 25.

Yeah, it's wild. It's just so weird to think that all my life, I've been living under a family name that isn't actually real. And like, my dad was named after one of his ancestors, but the name is actually made up. Just so weird and unexpected.

If it makes you feel any better, I'm 22 and I'm feeling the same way this year lol. Just not feeling like going out for some reason.

Well that's great news, this'll be the first year I go out to a bar for NYE.

I'm not doing jack**** today or tomorrow. After the Christmas commotion that lasted from Christmas Even through Sunday I just want to put some gaming hours in.

My girlfriend and I were going to see a movie then to a steakhouse for dinner, but she got sick so we're just hanging out at home. I hate crowded bars, so I figured the steakhouse with live jazz was a good compromise.

NYE is a pretty trashy night to go out.

Everything is overpriced, crowded and being on the roads is just stupid because people can't seem to think straight and just decide to drive.

I'll take the comfort of my house over any type of get drunk plans any day of the week, don't get me wrong, but NYE just exemplifies my decision. Only time worth going to a bar for me is if a game is on and a group of people are going out for food and a drink or two while watching.

Maybe it's just because I'm getting old and I think getting smashed just to get smashed is... silly, for lack of a better word.

Also, I finally hit 1000 posts. Pretty insignificant compared to some of you (), but I'll take it almost 7 years later.
