Re: 70 years ago....June 6, 1944
Hard to believe it was 70 years ago. We talk about courage and such nowadays. Imagine facing that.
An insufficient thank you is all I can muster.Check out my Tampa Bay Buccaneers CFM Thread.
You too can be a 5* recruit at FSU.......

I had the blessed opportunity to speak with a few of these guys (WWII vets) last August when we happened to be in Orlando staying at the same place where the DV conference was being held.
Many of these guys have a mindset and devotion to this country that we should all attempt striving towards.
I never really had a full appreciation of what this could have been like until I saw the re-enactment of this in Saving Private Ryan. Almost unthinkable.
We can't be thankful or appreciative enough.

An epic act in history.
Courage, bravery...sheer will and determination.
In retrospect any words given to describe the actions of D-Day are small and insignificant.
I sometimes think of myself in situations like that...and wonder how I would perform and it makes me appreciate what people who DO things like this even more.

Re: 70 years ago....June 6, 1944
The most amazing generation of people on this planet. Words cannot express the courage and bravery these people had. What love for their countries to go to such great lengths and risk so much.
Look throughout the whole war and there are just amazing examples of humanity at its finest, and not at it's finest I will give you that. But look beyond Normandy to the Battles at Stalingrad or the North African front. All the way to the outskirts of our own country.
My respect and admiration goes out to all of those who served, still serve and will serve in the future. I count myself blessed to have served with some of these great men and women for quite awhile. Even more blessed that I am home safe and sound.

Re: 70 years ago....June 6, 1944
There was an SI article about NFL Draft prospects training alongside Army (Navy SEALS/Army Rangers) veterans.
I discussed this with many people. My feeling is that if I were ever privileged to be an NFL draft hopeful (no chance) I would not be able to keep a clear conscience. I'm preparing for a multi-million dollar contract, these guys are rehabilitating from keeping my country safe. I wouldn't be able to do it. (That's what Pat Tillman thought.)
And that doesn't even compare to what 60 million lost their lives for. 420,000 Americans is by no means a small amount, but it pales in comparison to 22-27 MILLION USSR deaths. The Soviet Union won the war, and I say that as a proud American. 420,000—27million should not have happened, either number, and we have to take those numbers and use them as a basis for why that kind of destruction should never happen again.Comment

Just stumbled across this. Pictures from D-Day and what the locations look like today.
On 6 June 1944, Allied soldiers descended on the beaches of Normandy for D-Day, turning the tide of the Second World War against the Nazis, marking the beginning of the end of the conflict.
What these men did is hard to fathom. Landing on the beaches and running into German gunfire. Just thinking about it, I question whether I'd have the courage to follow what they did on that day.

Re: 70 years ago....June 6, 1944
Growing up I was always intrigued by The Civil War, anytime it was brought up in school the teacher had my full attention.
One of my gaming friends is a WW2 nut and I've been watching quite a bit of stuff lately on it myself. If I'm honest I'm a bit ashamed that I didn't have a better understanding and appreciation for what these men went through or what that entire generation had to endure. I'm just amazed at what these men gave up and sacrificed. Really hard to put into words the respect and appreciation these soldiers past and present deserve.

Re: 70 years ago....June 6, 1944
daflyboys PM'ed me about my post, let me clarify and apologize to all those insulted.
I meant absolutely no disrespect to the infinitely braver men than me who landed at D-Day. They truly are "the greatest generation," and nothing can dispute that.
I see, upon further reflection of my post, that it really should not be here. I failed completely to explain my meaning, and to those who rightfully took offense I apologize.
I myself have studied WWII extensively and because of that I sometimes wrongly look at the big picture which this thread does not call for. That does not explain my post, which was a very foolish one.
Again, let me reiterate that all those men who landed (and fought) are some of the bravest people this planet has seen, and my post failed to show that admiration I have for them. Another apology to those offended, I meant only the best.Comment
