I go to Kroger typically (depending upon where you live you may or may not know who they are) and they have a bunch of young kids who bag up the groceries on larger orders.
It's funny because despite losing some aspects of customer service we are gaining others.
For example, as depending upon your age (I am 46) you may or may not recall when gas stations, the large majority of them anyways, would come out and pump your gas without you getting out of your car.
And at the grocery store, Kroger specifically we are losing the ability to have a clerk ring us up and a kid bag our groceries as more and more of the self service kiosks are used, BUT we are also gaining the ability to order your groceries online and have them waiting for you at the store.
I tried this 2 weeks ago and wow it was easy but it didn't quite work the way I'd want it to. I got about $150 worth of groceries online, scheduled my pickup, went to Kroger and then had to wait about an hour to get my groceries. The kid working the dock apologized to me and said someone had called off work.
So the concept is good I guess, you can order online, go to the store and pick it all up and pay your bill and be on your way all without getting out of your car...but the execution wasn't. In the hour it took for me to wait I could have just gone in and shopped and got it done myself.
