Imo, I'd say once you hit high school, that's too old, so about 14 or so. For me, that's when I stopped.
When your peers start having regular Halloween parties - so 8th or 9th grade probably.

I remember the first time I didn't go out for any Halloween-related festivities was 8th grade. I stayed over at my friend's house and played All Star Baseball 2002 all night while his parents were at a Halloween party.

Keep in mind also though that I grew up with a plentiful amount of food allergies. The only Halloween treat I could have was the lady who always gave out apples, and even then I was allergic to its skin. I would still get the candy for my sisters though, and of course I still enjoyed myself those nights. Probably better off for it weight-wise and the like as well. My point is that when I gave it up I wasn't missing more than others would, but I digress.

I'd say the same as you, that once you're in high school it just seems a bit off to go trick-or-treating. My street dead-ends so we don't get many door knockers, but of the few I got last year there was one deeper-voiced pubescent nearly my height (and for his sake was probably good that he was behind a mask) with his parents at the end of my driveway. It was kind of awkward, and I laughed it off thinking he was just too old.

I think cutting it off by middle school seems about right, and I think kids that age would agree.

I'm at the point where I don't care how old they are (haven't always felt that way).

Of all the things kids could be doing trick or treating is probably one of the most harmless. If a high schooler wanted to go back to being a kid for a day and showed up at my door looking for some candy, I'd be happy to give some.

            Agreed

I don't care how old anyone is that comes to my door. If you're wearing a costume and say trick or treat you're getting candy

Who said we wouldn't give candy?

I was speaking more about the social comfortability of the event for the kids themselves. I think many of them would want to seek alternatives by that age.

EDIT: I hope you didn't see my anecdote in my post as me not giving him candy. Of course I gave him candy; in fact, I probably gave him about ten houses' worth (remember, I don't get many trick-or-treaters but I still buy in bulk, so I have to get rid of it somehow). It was just such a stark contrast between the group of children I had the few customers before and then this one teen who in all likelyhood could posterize me in basketball.

Unless I missed it, no one said that or even insinuated it lol.

Simply gave my opinion on it and how it's changed over the years.

Lol that reminds me of one year when i was in high school my parents and I went out to do something on Halloween and obviously weren’t home to give out candy, well when we got home someone had written a pretty nasty message on our driveway in chalk lol. I can’t remember exactly what it said and there were some curse words in it, but basically said we were selfish pricks and told us next year to have our lights on and to be in the spirit of Halloween. Like what.... never knew Halloween was that serious lol

At least if you're in HS and going trick or treating, make an effort with costumes. Wearing your regular clothes with a dollar store mask is just poor effort.

Lol how so? You’re still achieving the main goal of trick or treating in the first place.

It's poor effort because it just seems lazy and uncreative. To me, doesn't seem like fun. Kids might have costumes costing way more than the amount of candy they get, but there's fun to be had with dressing up and trick or treating. I live in a school area and find that too many HS kids don't care. Basically just paid $1 for a mask on their way home after school.

Not trying to generalize anything, but just stating my opinion based on experiences around here.

We really talking about how kids get free candy on a "holiday" meant for giving away free candy?
