I am no where close to a "jazz head" but I enjoy the music. I find it to be extremely relaxing

I would recommend watching Ken Burns' PBS documentary Jazz, especially if you are into older stuff (King Oliver, Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet, Bix Beiderbecke). It's a multi-parter and I'm working through it on Amazon TV little by little.
I had actually started watching Burns' documentary a couple years ago, but never finished it. Its fascinating to me and even though I really just started listening to the genre I'm discovering how interesting it can be by following some threads.

I became enamored with Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah (avatar) after watching a Tiny Desk Concert on NPR earlier this year. Gradually I've been getting into his library, but have only recently branched out to some other artists.

From Christian Scott's related artist page on Spotify I found Kamasi Washington and was immediately blown away by his 14 minute "single" The Truth. Over the past month or so I've been gradually becoming familiar with his nearly 3 hour debut succinctly titled Epic.

The only "giant" of industry I've really listened to is Miles Davis and that's only sparingly to Bitches Brew (****ing fantastic) and Kind of Blue.

Yesterday, however, I spent most of the day discovering Pharaoh Sanders and found myself enamored immediately.

On the whole I still find the genre very intimidating compared to others and am at a loss for what is considered essential listening.

Do any of you guys have recommendations or other places to start?

I am not a Jazz head but I really like the music as well.

I am really into Jazz covers and if you are my suggestion would be to check out artists/bands like Karen Souza and the Jazzistics on Spotify. Use the related artist to take you down the Spotify Rabbit Hole from there.

How many people have picked up discarded furniture and taken it home to clean and use?

Where I live, there is a maintenance building and discarded furniture from the rental buildings slowly pile up til they eventually rent one of those giant dumpsters, load it up, and send it on it's way.

They just loaded one of the those dumpsters today, and I couldn't help but notice this really comfy looking 2 seat reclining couch with center console got placed down as the first new piece of discarded furniture. It's way better than my couch.

But... why was it discarded? What's wrong with it? Is there mold? Someone peed on it? Bed bugs?

Or maybe there's nothing wrong with it and some tenant somewhere died and the couch just got put there during the clean up. If it's clean I want that couch, but I've never done like a "garbage picking" thing before and I'm worried there's a pretty valid reason it was discarded.

It's irrelevant now anyway since we got storms tonight so it's probably officially ruined, but how many of you guys would've just said **** it and picked that sucker up?

edit for pic: it looks a lot like this

I have never, and will never, pick up discarded furniture off the street and bring into my house. There is a reason it's out there and no amount of cleaning and disinfecting would bring me peace of mind.

That was my worry, someone is getting rid of it for some reason, and odds are the reason is bad. Sure someone might've upgraded couches, but if this one still had value they'd probably try to sell it. It just looks so comfy though lol

Nope, it's on the ground in front of the maintenance building. Part of me wants to convince myself the storms that blew through actually cleansed it lol

Picking it up off the street... No(though I know there's basically people running a business doing nothing but that. Drive a truck around the neighbourhood the night before garbage day and picks up scrap metal and other stuff. The trunk looks like the Grinchs sled after he stole all the presents lol. One time I got a new bathtub and threw old one out by the curb..... It was gone in 20 minutes in broad daylight).

If someone's moving and just getting rid of stuff then that's diff. My dining room table used to be someone else's. Moving, had no use for it, I got it, basically just polished up the wood and used varnish and reupholstered the chairs, and you could swear it's a $1000+ dining room set now.

When we moved last year into my grandparents house and had to toss tons of items at both, we had people stop and pick up all sorts of stuff down by the curb. I've only picked up a wooden chair or two.

Shoulda snagged that two seater. You could have done a hands on inspection if you went down there but with the rain its shot.

I would suggest just surfing through the threads on the r/jazz subreddit. There is so much information there. So many suggestions, links, commentary. There's always "intro to genre" guides and whatnot.

My favorite type of jazz, don't even know what specific genre it might be, is the instrumental type that you'd listen to on a foggy, rainy New England fall/winter night. That's the best way I could describe it.

Off the top of my head I remember Bill Evans, McCoy Tyner, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie, Dave Brubeck, among many, many others. Looking at Spotify I have a bunch of playlists saved. "Solitude", Best of the Best of Jazz, Jazz for Sleep, The Piano Bar, jazz Hip Hop Instrumentals, Late Night Jazz, Jazz-Classical Crossings, Jazz/Jazz Fusion/Jazz Rock/Jazz Funk-Afrobeat, Nocturnal Creatures, The Fragrance of Dark Coffee.

My advice is just click on playlists and start playing random ****. You'll quickly find a ton of amazing stuff.

Ordered a couple of items, all expected to come this week!

Now I'm basically gonna be like:

Except I won't be home when it gets delivered, so I'm gonna be checking my email so much to see when its delivered, and then rushing home during lunch break(hopefully it's delivered in morning) to make sure its delivered & move it from my doorstep(since new mailman is too lazy to put packages between the door and I'd hate taking chance leaving valuable package on doorstep)

I babysat my niece who is 11 years old. Nothing was on she wanted to watch so I happened to see Doug was on.

While I'm sitting intently loving every secong, she's bored out her mind watching it. I don't get how this is worse than what is on Disney now with these kids shows.

Cmon...Doug, Recess...I love these cartoons. I'll bet if I put on Looney Tunes it'd be the same thing. Watching it all now even, it's STILL hilarious.
