Re: Off Topic 2017: Fallen Kingdom

I asked in the CFB forum as well but thought I'd ask a more general crowd/the people who don't venture over there: I'm thinking about heading to Madison this October for the Wisconsin/Purdue game and am looking for suggestions for things to do, places to eat, stuff of that sort

Mondays were never that terrible for me due to MNF, RAW, 24 and sitcom lineup. In fact I would say it was my favorite day of the week.

The last couple years though, with football and wrestling taking a nosedive and no 24 and real sitcom lineup to entertain me, Mondays have definitely taken a hit.

Depends how close I am to work and what the lunch situation is like. At my current job, it takes about 40-45 min to get there and you get a 1 hour non paid lunch. So if I worked 10 hour days, it's really 11 hours of actually being there with lunch included. Then factor in travel and any chores and what not you have to do after work, I feel like my time to actually sit down and relax would go by in a blur before I have to get to bed lol.

I prefer my current schedule as well:

In the office 1 day a week, work from home the other 4.

Stuff like that got me through school during the years I hated it. Looking forward to specific days of week simply because of what was on that evening. Never mention that to people in school though lol. Made that mistake in class one day(teacher asked the class what they were looking forward to most at that particular point in time and I honestly answered certain TV/Sports related things and everyone laughed).

Even now, it helps at work to have specific big things to look forward to so that if you need some extra motivation or "light at the end of the tunnel", it's there. TV Shows don't got that same effect as it used to for me since it feels hollow once the shows themselves are over(though DVRing shows and creating my own tv schedule does lead to me fitting in shows in whatever day I want to see it), but even simple things like having a Saturday and/or Sunday planned out with certain people to do things, it has me looking forward to it all week long.

They really should make non-paid lunchbreaks illegal. At one place I worked, they didn't even give people lunch breaks. You got two 15 min breaks(can't combine breaks) during the day and that's it. To make matters worse, the breakroom itself was 2 mins away from where you had to punch out for your break, so you spent almost a third of your break just going to/getting back from it.

But this is the point of that question. 5 days work where you still have some time to yourself afterwards but just 2 days off, or 4 days of it basically just revolving around work, but then you get that extra day off to make up for it.

In this scenario, I meant it more like everyone would be like that too. Like the norm would become 4 days,10 hours a day(and Monday becomes a standard weekend date,so a holiday long weekend would become 4 days instead of 3). And similarly with school, instead of 5 days with 6.5 or so hours a day, it'd become 4 days with 8hrs a day.

Work days themselves would be more exhausting, but just wanted to see if people thought that extra day off would be > the evening downtime, because I'm sure for many, you're still thinking of work in the evening when you get home and your evenings might just involve you getting everything ready for the next day too. Might as well shift some of that time to an extra day off instead.

Everywhere I've worked lunch was unpaid except for one place where you were paid for it M-Th and Friday you worked 6 hours (7-1) with no breaks. I actually really liked that schedule. People still took small breaks on Fridays though and management didn't care. Fridays were always pretty casual.

I just find unpaid lunch breaks to be stupid and cheap. Would make you feel like you're wasting time on your break and rushing to get back so you're not spending too much time of your day not getting paid. One thing I saw others do(and eventually did myself) at the place with 15 min breaks was that people took a fair amount of washroom breaks. Like they'd go for 5 mins every now and then, just to use their phone. They can't deduct pay from washroom breaks, and as long as they don't see you going often, wouldn't notice what you're doing.

Question for any tech-savvy people out there:

The wifi signal at my new place doesn't have the greatest range (walls I'm guessing?), so I got a network extender in hopes that it would reach back to my room. The range has increased exponentially and I'm getting better connection, but the connection still drops occasionally which makes streaming and online gaming a bit of a pain. The network strength is always at or near full, so does anyone have any ideas as to what is causing the timeouts?

Maybe your router and/or general area you live? My house is weird too, when other people come by, some of their devices get weird connections inside though I never had it really happen like that myself. It's improved after I got a better router, though still seems like the main issue might just be the area itself/the internet cable coming into the house.

More tales from my work: (I should write all these things down for my future book lol)

Higher up people finally realized they had nothing for me, but because I was promised stuff and have a contract(even if it was approved by a now former employee), they're keeping me on for duration of it(and indirectly said under almost any other circumstances, the result might not be the same). But told me not to come in tomorrow (on plus side, they said I'm getting paid for it ). Sounds like major staffing shifts could come next week though just to finish off summer and after that, it'll be much diff in September onwards.

I wonder if they read my posts on here lol.
