    Re: 2017 Fitness Challenge

Well brahs...hopefully my chest muscle strain or tear or whatever isn't too bad. Getting it looked at in the AM. Looking online to try and find something similar and I just can't.

It's not a pec tear where I had an intense pain and then bruising in my armpit area. It's a weird pain but it has gotten worse the past couple days and spread. It's like near my nipple and goes to my lat.

Hoping to get answers tomorrow but not optimistic. I just hope it's something that some rest and a couple weeks will take care of.

Don't look at WebMD or you'll be dying of cancer within minutes.

Hopefully it's just a strain though.

Just a strain of intercostal muscles along my ribs. It was severe enough the muscles bled through so I can see visible injury from the nipple to lat area.

Was pretty sure it wasn't my pec. The pain is very intense when it moves the wrong way. Makes me understand a rib injury now.

So I'm happy with the news and despite my thinking of having a deadly disease based on my web MD self diagnosis I'm think I'm gonna recover just fine

Well fellas, I finally landed on the DL due to inguinal hernia surgery. Was going strong since November 2015, but that iron man streak is done haha. Here's to getting back to clanging and banging in a month or so ( hopefully ha)!

Oh and try to stay positive and happy always!

              Re: 2017 Fitness Challenge

Fellas, it's admittedly been a crappy year for me when it comes to exercise. I stopped going to the gym, because I was struggling with motivation and honestly, after spending years and years in various gyms over the years, feeling very burned out and almost anxious to an extent when I enter those buildings.

I still get out and run a couple of times a week, and ride my bike when I have more time, and I do enjoy both activities. I'm just not being consistent with how many days I get out there and do the work.

I'm fairly certain the lack of consistency with exercising is tied to what I believe to be a form of depression that I've been going through. I struggle with bad thoughts in my head (despite getting raises at work, feeling like I'm not doing a good enough job) and feel lonely at times (I'm happily married, but don't really have many friends and my family lives across the country). My diet has also been pretty bad; I'm making small changes to improve, but still plenty of room for improvement.

I know that exercise would help clear my head and alleviate some of the symptoms, but it becomes almost a vicious cycle of the lack of exercise, depression and wanting to change all feeding into each other and then nothing seems to get done or change.

I've been thinking that perhaps the best thing for me would be to get back out of my comfort zone and try something new. Around 10 years ago when I was struggling bad with anxiety and panic disorder, I started taking Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai kickboxing classes. Having to focus on learning new skills re-wired my brain and combined with feeling better physically thanks to consistent training, my symptoms all but cleared up.

Sorry for the long post. Sounds like you guys are doing well with your own workouts, and that's awesome. Any encouraging words would be helpful. I have been a member of OS for 15 years (man, that's crazy to type) and really enjoy the community that's been created here.

                Re: 2017 Fitness Challenge

Well man good luck in trying to get to where you want to be.

I'm with you in the sense that feeling good about your body completely changes your mood. The key is just consistency and getting over the fact that your results aren't coming in a day or week or even a month.

If you think the new training style will jump start your passion then go for it. I was recently able to make some big changes and I think joining a gym is really what did it. I had been using work gyms or apartment gyms and it's just not the same for me. Plus when I'm in that open environment I feel more inclined to work out a little harder.

I've hit my goal of being in the 215-220 range and I'm pretty content. I know I could trim to 210 or so and get super lean but I haven't had the desire to put myself through that.

Thank you for this post and sharing your thoughts and feelings with us.

Motivating each other is part of what makes this thread great.

I have to admit I have many of the same feelings. Some days its like every little thing slightly annoys you or rubs you the wrong way. Like you suggest at the end change for the sake of change can be good to shake things up.

Plus, those classes sound fun and would offer a unique way of mobilizing your body in addition to the cycling and running.

It is amazing how much different 5-10 pounds can make you feel. Its not really enough to "feel" heavier, but its slightly noticeable in the mirror if not to others. Lack of body confidence can threaten to kill any mood or motivation.

Sometimes after a bad week/weekend of eating I get focused on the short-term outcome rather than just trying to settle back down and keep grinding to tell myself it'll be back to normal as long as I keep doing what I know to do.

Usually I can push through the bad thoughts and feelings because I know once I'm done my head feels clean and clear.

Sometimes, and this is rare for me, I'll find myself skipping a workout and in bed with a book for 4.5 hours like last night.

Thanks, ND. Awesome to hear that you've hit your goal.

The more I think about it, a group dynamic is something I need. It'll help with social interactions (it's ironic in a way, because my job is in communications and I talk to people all day) and making friends, and also hold me more accountable to showing up routinely. It's been too easy to make excuses to not exercise.

I've looked into MMA classes, but man, they are expensive. I forget that when I trained years ago I had a sweet deal and didn't pay full price. There's a cycling club that rides every weekend and takes in all levels of riders, so I'm also looking into that.

Nothing wrong with reading a good book; I haven't had a ton of luck finding a novel that's gripped me lately. I've been trying to read authors that are new to me. They're not poorly written or anything, just the story doesn't connect with me. Ah well, I'm sure I'll find something.

I try and read a little each night, but typically only get a good hour or two before I'm falling asleep into my book.

Jump over to the OS Book thread. The thread stays fairly active so hopefully something in there will jog your interest.

Well, my hotel's exercise bike wasn't operational, so I said the hell with it and ran on the regular ol' treadmill. I set the pacing to a 5:15 mile and did it pretty handedly. Don't get me wrong, it was difficult, but I have found that if the treadmill sets my pace and kind of pushes me to go at it, I can probably break 5:00 much easier. Too bad I'm not going to be in another hotel for several months.

Unfortunately, I had my Vita playing music for me with headphones on and it somehow fell off the machine, onto the track, shot off and into a wall. I had a casing on it which broke off (I reattached it, though it's a bit looser), so all is good I think... but I'm sitting here thinking about what would have happened if I stepped on my Vita, lost my footing, and fell forward onto the track. I would have shot backward and slammed the wall behind me. Given my previous concussions, I don't think I could have handled something like that. Could have been very dangerous, especially with nobody around. I'm going to try to find some other remedies for my music while running.

Why not use an iPod? I don't like running or lifting with my phone, so my Nano gets plenty of use.

Edit: Glad your Vita is OK; I know how much you enjoy that handheld.

I have an old iPod Nano (3rd gen, I think?), but outside of that I don't own any Apple products. Outside of individual songs I can't get elsewhere but iTunes, I haven't purchased a single Apple item for myself before. Just don't want to support them. But that's for another thread.

Anyway, I never use it, and although I thought about bringing it, my primary thing I was actually going to do was stream the Giants game on MLB.TV with my Vita. Problem was the WiFi wasn't strong enough in the fitness room, so I did music instead.

There's a song that runs 5:00 flat that I think I want to try to next time with the treadmill (Alter Bridge - Island of Fools) and see if that can make it "easier."

DJ, I hope things are going better for you.

I got roped(pun intended) into trying something new at our gym. I haven't been in all summer, but I thought I'd get back on track.(pun intended)

Our gym used to have a cardio room with movies running all the time. I peeked in a week and a half ago and no more movies and they had a new rowing machines, 4 pulley stations, 5 wifi treadmills and a bench area. I noticed all these new signs, 3 bucks per day. I'm like, what, shouldn't this be free with a premier membership?

So, I enter the gym at 8 and this person starts telling me I should try the Q, starts at 8:30. Ah, ok, sales job coming. She spots me on the treadmill and said, oh, come on in, try it anyway. So, next thing I know I'm wearing a heart monitor.

There are a few eletronic boards hanging on the ceiling and like I mentioned, 4 different stations. Rowing machines, bench, treadmill, and a RSX area. 45 seconds full exertion, 30 second rest, or 15 seconds/45 seconds rest. I know now I'm performing like Cr.ossFit or HIIT. A person could look up at the screen and see the % your heart rate was working at. During full exertion, I was climbing into the 90's. This went around for 2 rounds. By the end, I had 1348 calories burned in 40 minutes. I was bent over by the time we were finished.

Wait for it, for only 89 month for 3 months, this new area is all yours. Not. Some Asst. Physical Therapy Mgr. asked me, Why not? All I said is that we are trying to put one of our
kids through college at the UofMN. That shut them up real quick. Anyway, why would I pay 90 bucks per month for something I can do at they gym if I want to?

All that happened Wednesday, my muscles are still sore, even popping Ibprofen. This body was not ready for what I put it through on Wednesday.
