Re: Stick to Sports?
It's not about talking about politics, per se. It is what it could escalate into. Similar to why OS has a TOS about some issues. It's not about the actual conversation, more of what it could delve into from there.
Nothing ever good comes from talking politics or religion at work. The only thing that it does is it will eventually fracture the workers.Last edited by PeoplesChampGB; 02-22-2017, 10:21 AM.NFL- Green Bay Packers

Re: Stick to Sports?
I don't have a problem with sports athletes or celebrities having their own views and opinions, most of which differ from mine. My problem is people that are blindly influenced by the famous that don't live in the same world as the regular person.

Re: Stick to Sports?
This is more than about simply talking. This is about using your status as a pro athlete (or a Hollywood type) to attempt making a social statement. For example, and it's hard to have a direct analogy because of the unique existence of pro leagues, we've had a good number of the Patriots state they will absolutely refuse to visit the White House with the current POTUS most likely because they don't agree with his policies and probably believe he is racist, sexist, homophobic, Islamophic, mysogynistic, etc, etc. These are not beyond a doubt proven facts, only someone people's perception. Now, if you and a group of your buddies or your team at work had won a prestigious award for your accomplishments and your CEO wanted you to visit and possibly consult with another friendly corporation's CEO (maybe because your CEO envisioned their could be a merger in the near future or what have you), but some of your team members held similar perceptions of that other company's CEO and are therefore refusing to do the visit/consult, they would most certainly face suspension or firing.Comment

Re: Stick to Sports?
It just ties into promoting a healthy work environment. Politics and religion, by nature, can be very divisive and damaging to your work relationship with others.
I talk politics at work sometimes, but don't try to go too far to one side or the other and I know my audience. I won't initiate a political conversation with someone I don't know.[NYK|DAL|VT]

Re: Stick to Sports?
That's a chicken and egg issue thing for me. If everyone grows up thinking we can't talk about politics or religion (another thing I talk about almost everyday at work) in public because people are childish about it, the result is just an artificially calm workplace. That's one of the issues of the country in a nutshell, everyone goes back to their cubicle fuming about something someone said instead of trying to discuss it. I understand why a company would want to kill political talk (less distractions) or even a site like OS, I just think the issue has gone from people trying to create "politics free" zones to people having the ability to make their entire world that. We've made it so that people just get pissed off and we don't have to see it, but people act like we've created a world where no one is pissed off. It just becomes easier and easier to ignore other people. "I don't wanna hear that, I'm at work" "I don't wanna hear that, we're in school" "I don't wanna hear that, I'm watching sports". People talk about echo chambers and safe spaces and then cut off every avenue of possible discussion to talk about stuff. It reminds me of a lot of the stuff in the protest thread, people just don't wanna be bothered.Originally posted by G PericoIf I ain't got it, then I gotta take it

Re: Stick to Sports?
There's some sort of federal law that says federal workers can't talk about politics. I'm not sure how specific it is. No one follows it though.

Re: Stick to Sports?
People don't want "no politics" in their sports/music/work/movies. They just don't want "politics" that they disagree with in them. A lot of people just don't like to be challenged or can't discuss other views without becoming emotional. Then it devolves. The Internet/Social media has given everyone a voice. Things aren't all that much different these days regarding the things society argues about with one another, it's just that you hear more voices than you did before, and you hear them instantly.Comment

Re: Stick to Sports?
It's like everything else in this world, we become so oversaturated with this stuff, and social media has made it unbearable.
I've got pages like Playboy telling me what the president did today, lol who gives a ****. And what does playboy know about politics? Laughable.

Re: Stick to Sports?
"Read it for the articles" jokes aside, isn't Playboy actually well-renowned for its political commentary articles over the course of several decades and sort of a pioneer in that respect? Someone older than I would have to answer for sure but I seem to remember this being a thing. It's like everything else in this world, we become so oversaturated with this stuff, and social media has made it unbearable.

Re: Stick to Sports?
Trust me man I didn't follow Playboy for their opinion on Trump, and judging by alot of fb comments, neither did many others.
Now in doses, fine, but they posted a political status ever damn hour it felt. Needless to say I unfollowed them.

Sure, if you buy the magazine, I'm sure many read the articles. But on facebook? As a state employee (community college professor) I'm not allowed to show support toward any particular political candidate or party. We can discuss politics in class, but only in an objective manner about policies.Comment

You would think public universities/colleges would have to abide by this too, but I don't think they all do.Comment
