It depends on whether I'm referring to the subject or the object.

If the object, I never use "we." I might have slipped a couple of times saying: "They're killing weee!" but that's on rare occasion.

Last time I used "us" as the subject, my friend thought I just came off watching The Empire Strikes Back when I said, "Us have been playing well."

So in a nutshell, me use both... not exclusively one or the other.

whenever I hear a player or coach or owner say "we have the greatest fans, I generally accept that they gratefully accept us as part of the team.

I'll admit, I'm one that cringes when people say "us" or "we" when referring to their sports team when they aren't on the team (or working for them). Has bothered me since High School when I played football and one of the band kids would always try and be a Monday Morning QB saying "WE..." needed to do this/that to improve.

I do admit to saying we or us when it's something positive like winning or something general like a roster move and to saying they when it's something negative but it doesn't bother me when I or anyone else does it because it's completely involuntary at this point and I will put zero effort into changing it at my age. I would find it weird if someone just started following a team and started using we though, that's pretty odd because at least I've been following my team for 25 seasons so I've grown with them and feel connected to them enough to involuntarily say we and us.

Re: Do you use the word "we" or "us" when you talk about your favorite sports team?

I say "we" and/or "us" for my high school teams (alum and now teach there) and college teams (alum). Not so much with the pro teams I'm a fan of.

Besides, saying "we" lost or "we" won is a whole lot easier/faster than saying "the team I'm a fan of" lost or "the team I associate with" won

Most rational people get what you are saying

I definitely say it but it just comes out natural. It's not a pre thought out thing. Heck I'm likely just as crushed as the players are if we get knocked out of the playoffs.
It’s easier to do the right thing, than to explain why you didn’t.

probably more so, at least they're getting paid to lose

I use we/they/team name and don't think about which I'm using. I also think it's funny that people actually care about it and also think it's funny when people criticize other people for wearing jerseys. Mind your own business.

If you're wearing a players jersey it's okay to use I or me when talking about them.

I think baseball's is most objectively advantageous because of the impact of "possession" (being on offense) in the ninth inning or later and the various environments (not just weather, but field dimensions, wall heights, lighting situations, speed of grass, etc.) and your familiarity with them.

Basketball and football normally only have a momentous advantage built from the crowd, unless you are playing football in the Northeast in January. Environmentally-speaking, basketball is as uniform as they come, IMO.

Years and years of data in soccer shows a significant home field advantage as well. In many sports it goes as far as to affect officials as well.

How much better? Are we talking baseball teams going 42-40 at home? How many teams have a .700+ win percentage at home?
