I'm going to look at getting one. With the costs, it is paid off quickly versus the landscape company cutting every week. I could handle the edging once every 2 weeks.

Anyone have tips on how to deal with bush trimmings? I have not found a good way to dispose of them. I have tried taking a broom to sweep off the tops after each each time I trim. It works decently well to get the clippings off, but they all end up falling down into the mulch which is difficult to get up.

Then when they do fall into the mulch I've tried sweeping it and taking a leaf blower on low setting. Both ways end up removing some of the mulch and neither gets up all of the clippings.

I normally just take a rake and lightly rake the leaves. You'll rake up some mulch but not enough to have to immediately lay some more down.

If you have a tarp or large piece of cardboard lay it down on the ground. Trim. Sweep trimmings onto tarp/cardboard and pick up.

Scott, how do they handle flowerbeds/no mow areas and terrain?

My biggest problem with our yard is wiregrass running throughout the yard.

One of the perks of living out and away from people is that yesterday morning I was able to start cutting grass at 6:15 in the morning as the sun started to rise, meaning I got all the yard work done before it got humid and the rain/storms sat in.

Sometimes I miss having a next door neighbor, but most of the time, especially times like this, I don't.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I go back n forth on country living vs city living all the time.

Country living is so quiet, so much more relaxing. But when the power goes out, if you don't have a generator it might take days, if not weeks for the power to come back on. Same with snow storms, your roads will take forever to get plowed.

City is cool because of the convenience of stores everywhere, power gets restored quickly, and roads get plowed as a priority. But it's so ****ing loud, like nonstop loud, there's no break from it

Most people I know hate the "middle of nowhere" lifestyle. I disagree to an extent.

Like mentioned, it's nice to live there...until something goes wrong.

Internet out? Power goes? Pipes break (or you even have to use a septic tank).

It's more than just "I need to buy X, but the closest store that sells it is 40 minutes away". Although the lack of attractions, public areas and so on is the main reason many people I know would hate that lifestyle.

For me, I could get by living in the middle of nowhere as long as I had essentials. Although in Canada, winters are the main reason to not be living in a place like that

But you're right, out in my area, it takes a few days for them to restore power when it is knocked out.

As for roads, ours are never plowed by city/government, at least the backroads. Those of us in the area do our best to clear our roadways to make travel passable to the main road which is immediately plowed because its a highway that leads into town where the nearest hospital is located.

Hospitals and infrastructure are the main reasons, safety is next. Generally safety isn't a problem most of the time, but if something happens, you are on your own or depending on your neighbors to help. Cops will not be able to be there in 3-5 mins. Hospitals would be the main reason I couldn't do it, needing to have access to doctors and a fully functioning hospital if needed is too important.

Re: Anyone else enjoy doing yard work?

This year so far has been dry and humid. This is the worst the grass has looked in years. It looks better in the middle of December than it does right now. Not bothering to water it because that feels unnecessary if that's literally the only thing keeping it alive this summer.

Funny thing, I have people on my street who pay for weekly grass mowing. I know they pay for the season in advance, but how/why anyone even thinks it's necessary to pay someone to cut it every week is crazy. Not a big lot, if I were to do it myself it would take maybe 30-40 mins tops (front and back).

Since the weather has been dry and humid, grass isnt growing, but people still come weekly to "mow the lawn". Clearly they do good business, I saw some guy on a segue type of mower just go through their yard in minutes. Someone else cut the edges and literally all I see is clouds of dust from the yard. Theres nothing to cut, and people are getting paid who knows how much to basically run a lawn mower over dirt.

what do you mean by "dry and humid"? these are antonyms and I thought you miss typed at first, but you doubled down on the term and now I'm confused

As in its humid, but the heat dries things (like the grass) up.

With it finally spring, now I'm starting to slowly see about what prep could be done around the yard as the weather gets nicer, and its easier to get what's needed since everything isn't shut down this time around (so even online orders will actually get fulfilled this year around).

Big clearances on fall yard stuff like fall fertilizer. Might get some of those.

Never knew you need certain types of grass seeds/fertilizer based on where you live. Apparently my area is a bluegrass/ryegrass area.

Gonna go a diff route with the vegetable garden this year. Usually I just have some grass clippings mixed in for early spring, and then mulched up leaves put in the soil for the fall. Might go after a few bags of some higher quality soil for it this year around.

yep, time to trade in the snowblowers for lawnmowers. spring & fall are great for working outdoors but I just can't say the same about winter & summer.

at least in the summer you can get an early start in the a.m. or wait till later in the evening's p.m. but in the winter it helps to be a glutton for punishment to work outdoors
