If she seriously does that, she's starved for attention....but hey, your gain!

I wish I had a yard to complain about having to work on....

      NOPE!

I've been very happy living in an apartment after years of maintaining a lawn. Low maintenance lifestyle has been very nice.

My neighbors do this (mow/yard-work half naked) and it drives me crazy. I don't care about the bugs, but I don't want to be seeing homeboys' stick-post figure bodies glistening with sweat like a Twilight vampire.

That's the thing though Odogg, long sleeves are going to help keep you cool. It seems counter intuitive but there is a reason almost all lawn care people who do it for a living do it in long clothing (Down here at least).

The shirt will get soaked with sweat and this will then help keep you cooler than a short sleeve. It also offers sun and pest protection.

A long sleeve wicking dry-fit shirt (light colored), good pair of khaki work pants, and a good venting straw hat. Its like anything else, if you have the right equipment, it makes the job easier.

I'm a bit biased towards Carhartt, their clothing has always treated me great and its very durable.

Re: Anyone else enjoy doing yard work?

I never have any problems with bugs when I'm moving around in the yard. It's when I'm stationary or if it's a really overcast day/near dusk--that's where it becomes more of a problem. I tend to like to mow when it's hottest outside and because I use an emissionless mower (a reel mower) I don't worry about emitting greenhouse gases during the hot part of the day.

I guess the level of bugginess also depends on how "wooded" of an area you live in. I don't really mind most "yard bugs" though anyway. Beetles, lady bugs, lightning bugs, earwigs, crickets, bees etc don't really do any harm unless you're allergic or have a phobia.

Now, when I'm walking my dog and she stops to sniff a tree for like 30 seconds, then yeah it's gnat city and I look like a crazy person swatting around my head.

I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I think I have more weeds than grass, so I don't really enjoy it.

I called one of these lawn care companies last year, and ask them to come over. I explained that I have lots of weeds and need them to come over and help me get rid of it and turn my grass into healthy grass.

They told me to get rid of the weeds and then give them a call. WTH???

I love it. I have a strict cut pattern that I use. I spend hours weeding and watering. Also, I follow the fertilizing schedule of my Country Club. I take pride in my little patch of land.

I don't mind it either. It's a good stress reliever and a break from 2 kids under 3. Headphones on zoned out in my own little world. The only thing I hate is cutting it during the beginning of the spring when my allergies are flaring up. That, and the occasional rabbit that hides in the grass and likes to jump out scaring the hell out of me. There's woods behind my house so I'll usually catch something to show my kids, a turtle, frog, snake, even baby rabbits on occasion. Catch and release!

Re: Anyone else enjoy doing yard work?

For the people complaining about bugs, maybe it just depends on the time you do stuff outside? For me at least, I notice certain times of the day(usually earlier in morning and later in evening) are when most of those annoying flys/gnats are out. Not all year long, but depends on temperature especially. Hate those things when using a trimmer because it requires two hands to use and you can't swat bugs away.

Speaking of trimmer, it's sad I had a trimmer for years never realizing it was a convertible edger. How much more fun it is using an edger lol. You think you did enough with a trimmer...then switch to the edger and get so much more horizontal facing blades of grass by walkways and sidewalk.

I'm sure neighbors who ever see me doing this probably think it looks so advanced lol. One minute I'm trimming grass, then suddenly twist some things around on it and use it as an edger.

After many years of growing up on a farm mowing a ton I reached the part of my life last year where I went the "I'll pay to have someone do it".. which is what I do now.

With that said I'll be the first to volunteer when someone needs help working a hay field. I LOVED those times growing up, even when storing in the barn.. We'd make a run and on way back there would be mom with the tea/lemonaide waiting for us.
Guess just a nostalgia high when I help others now.
