Re: Anyone else enjoy doing yard work?

Gotta get a head start this year on getting rid of "unwanted visitors". Gotta stop them from everything like digging up yard and "marking their territory" in exact same spots every time.

Easy solution is to get a dog lol. People around me all got dogs, and obviously "mark their territory" all around the yard, so it basically diverts all animals towards mine like an airport runway.

I've tried homemade solutions, products like Critter Ridder and other things, but none seem to work at all.

Even looking on a site like home depot, the stuff they have all have bad reviews.

Just finished getting my first real yard work done. Grass cut, dead bushes and flowers removed. Grass seed and weed killer set.

Hell of a workout but worth it

You just need better neighbors. It sucks if they let their dogs do their business on your yard (I have to deal with it too).

I started last week. Cleaned the pond and pulled all the weeds we could but today was even nicer so I was able to clean the pond again in more favorable conditions (a better week coming up), cut the grass and planted some new grass seed to cover the spot my dog claimed.

I was hurting last week until Wednesday. Can't wait to see what this week brings lol.

Yeah I won’t be mobile until next weekend when I plan on doing more work.

Glad to finally get seed down. I have same issue with dog claiming spots but thankfully it’s not anywhere near house and is at back of property line so not too visible

Think I’m going to cut back some of shrubbery that lines the creek in the backyard.

I still have to get lawn furniture out of garage and put out. May do that tomorrow if not too sore lol

Lol, I meant that people don't have wild animals in their yard because they have dogs. The animals know which yard has dogs, so it leads them to the 1 without.

I wish that were true here, I have a dog and still get the full gamut. The worst are the coyotes but when they aren't around I have seen deer, turkey, groundhogs, rabbits and pretty much any other pest you could imagine.

Don't know how effective it is, but I saw stuff selling for just under $100 that's supposed to drive away those types of animals. Though if you have a dog, don't know if that will effect it too.

Can't find anything good for my specific situation. Next thing I'm trying are plants. Apparently certain plants give off smells that some animals hate. Indoor wise, found something on Amazon that is supposed to drive out anything indoors like ants, mice, insects and so on. You just have to plug it into an outlet.

The dreaded day has come. Last weekend storm knocked down over 100 branches in my back yard of various sizes and a few hundred pine cones. Today it hit 57 degrees. 4 hours to put all that stuff in a nice little very long line for this guy can come pick it up with his truck and trailer. Probably going to take him 5 trips. Gnats are out but they aren't bad yet, just a few.

We are finally getting spring like weather here in Maine so this weekend I plan to pick up all the fallen branches, rake the yard, and trap and relocate the skunks living under my front porch. Just another spring cleaning.

If you have nuisance animals on your property those gimmick items like scented things and such do not work. If you are seeing digging in your yard it is something that is feeding on grubs. In my case it's skunks. I deal with them every year. I trap them and relocate them. This year I am finally going to shell out the money to have my lawn treated with chemicals that will kill all the grubs and eliminate the food supply and the skunks should move on. I am also going to seal up the underneath of my porch where they live during the winter. I put some heavy mesh wire screening around it 5 inches into the ground but they dug right under it, little bastards!!!

If you have skunks and want to trap them let me know. I've been doing it safely for years if you need any info.

have you ever been sprayed? I'm a skunk wimp, they scare the hell out of me, in my younger days I visited a female friend and thought it would be funny to scare a stray cat in the front yard, which turned out to be a skunk and sent us both running to the backyard in a mad panic, the back door was locked and we were holed up back there in fear for an hour before finally gathering the courage to check the front, I have chills just typing about it :o

It's not skunks, it's raccoons. They basically live in a neighboring tree so can't completely get them moved away from there, but at least try to get them to go in someone elses yard.

They do everything. Dig up yard(which this year I'm trying to kill the grubs beforehand) and worse, they basically vacation on my deck lol. I mean it. Like their whole family will come here, roam around, stay for awhile, use bathroom and leave. They don't destroy anything thankfully, but having to get a shovel every few days and a hose to clean up after them is getting annoying.

It's in exact same spots too so they clearly know what they're doing. Can even put barriers up and they'll get past them and still head to same spots. Tried stuff from hardware stores but didn't work. And some solutions like using vinegar or mothballs MIGHT work for a night or two, but if it ever rains, it obviously will wash away. Motion sensor lights don't matter, and motion sensor toys(that'd make animal noises if anything moves past it) doesn't do the trick either.

For raccoons just soak a towel or long rag in ammonia and tie it around the areas they like to be at. They will move and so will every other animal. No animal like the smell of ammonia. Raccoons also don't like the smell of cinnamon and black pepper either. So you can sprinkle both of those on your back porch and bathroom spots too.

What's funny is I get some friendly raccoons around my house. They hang out with the 4-5 outdoor cats we have hanging around. It's pretty weird. So I don't even worry about them. They don't get into anything.

I do have coyotes though. I don't even live in the country I live on a quiet dead end street with some wood to the side and behind my house. I hear them howling sometimes.

And here's a crazy story that is something I will never forget. A couple years ago I took my dog out at about 4am and he's in the grass just kinda standing there and a mother freakin coyote shows up and walks right in between me and my dog and just went on his way. Now growling or anything just walked right by us. Didn't see him coming. Just appeared out of nowhere.

I wasn't even freaked out at first but then I realized he could have attacked my dog and probably would have killed him in second if he wanted to. So now I am extra vigilant when I take him out at night.

I got semi sprayed once back when I first started dealing with them. You can tell when they are going to spray because they usually will stomp their front paws before they let it go. Worst smell ever. Occasionally they will spray under the back of my house or under the porch and man it is bad. The whole house smells for days after. If they wouldn't spray under there I'd leave them alone , but they always seem to each spring. Usually around mating season. This year they did it in February. If the male approaches the female and shes not ready she will spray him to fend him off and that is what happens every time they get back under there.

I'm actually setting the trap tonight so I'll be taking one for a ride tomorrow morning. A little peanut butter on a small piece of bread does the trick. I want them gone before they give birth which is mid to late may. One time I waited to long and I saw the babies so I couldn't set the trap. I started feeding them cat food and waiting for them to grow and relocated the whole family in the fall. I bet I've moved at least 20 of these things. They have been a problem in my area my entire life , I bought the house I grew up in. This area is nicknamed "Skunk Hill". There are so many I should probably kill them but as much as they stink they are to darn cute and I just can't kill them.

I've tried to reason with them , telling them if they don't spray under the house they can live there forever but apparently they do not understand English. It's a Bummer.
