I think it's alright. Nice way to get some exposure, especially if they possess any actual talents. I think it's nice if their parents are in the know (or even involved in the process). Plus, even if they're famous for just being famous, you can't really blame their idiot followers lol.

Speaking of which, I just found out that a [now senior] student I taught three years ago has a YT channel with 100,000 subscribers. I filled in for another class and this freshman student was showing another student a photo he snapped of him on campus and said that he actually said hi to him and such. It is crazy how they like look up to somebody like that. I sat there going, "Yeah, I taught him. So what if he has some subscribers? Kid couldn't zip up his pants but he can do selfies for subs?" Strangest combination of "kind of weird but also kind of cool" that other kids geek out over that.

I don't subscribe to YouTube channels, though... at least not as a norm. I never regularly watched people that do everyday life kinds of things like that one kid who found that dead body and caught flack for it, or the rant folk like Jenna Marbles (though I think she's funny). I may have been born about ten years too late, where my generation falls into this crowd and I optionally lose myself with a long attention span and a flip phone. The craze isn't for me, but I see why the kids do it and I see no reason for that to be stopped.

A friend of mine asked for help on facebook, said her daughter was getting bullied. Someone was commenting on her youtube videos making fun of her for only having 9 subscribers. Well the daughter is only nine years old though. So she wants our help by going and subscribing to her channel and giving her likes.

I'm keeping my mouth shut to her with my feelings about this, but wanted you guys take on this.

Can't she disable the comments? Or is she not wanting to do that?

Not wanting to do that I presume (no one asked that) but also I think the damage is kinda done. Disable the comments, but the kid will still see the number of views and subscribers.

I get what the mom is doing, wanting to help her self-esteem. At the same time though, it's a perfect opportunity to teach her daughter how to appreciate being unique, always have her own opinion and how to deal with society and people not liking you.

Well, now you're asking a different question and shedding light in a different direction.

General disclaimer: the Internet is mean. If you can't handle it, disable comments or don't post content. We are always succumbing to ridicule of some sort.

My math YouTube channel got some posts from people on a different continent, and cracked jokes about my dead father and this and that (don't know how they obtained that kind of information). Initially I took it personally, but then just decided to say that it was more of a reflection on them then it was on me.

Heck, I once tried to be "that guy" and say something on a more offensive end more just for laughs than anything else, and when I found out that my comment hurt someone I was devastated. I sorted it out with that person and we constantly e-mail each other all of the time now, but I don't know how it is that some people do what they do on there.

As to your question though, YouTube is just one outlet set up for cyber-bullying. If they have a Smartphone, then they probably have a lot of social media apps where the same thing can happen. It's crazy how terrible some people are to others, and it leads down to the same path as things can on YouTube.

My advice to those is create on YouTube for the content, not for fame. Do something that you enjoy, don't read most of what is said about you unless you are really good at mentally filtering and taking criticisms positively, and just be you... even if it's for the nine people who really love your stuff. Not everyone is going to like you, and that's just how the world is.

But if the kid is nine years old, that's sorta young... the parents definitely have to be in the picture there. They should be the ones operating the channel in full, really.

EDIT: Oh man, I just had a mental lapse. You were saying younger than 14. I totally didn't read that right. Umm, that one is iffy. See what I said about parents for sure.

Kinda my take on it too. I over-analyze a lot (yall may have noticed lol) so I saw the request and immediately jumped to "this is why we got people taking selfies at the Holocaust Memorial"

I wanted to tell the mom not to teach her daughter that if she is not getting attention its a bad thing.

Is that person someone they know, or just some random internet troll? If it's some random person, then they should disable comments/be taught about how bad internet can be(and possibly have account monitored/supervised by a parent).

If it's someone they know, then that's a much more serious issue.

Either way, if that parent has a social media account, posting what's happening on social media could be enough to get attention of others. I sometimes see stories like this online where someone might say something about similar situations and then that post goes viral and people support the victim. In this case, if it works, that might end up getting them a few hundred or thousand followers.

Yeah the girl is basically uploading the type of drawings and stuff that used to just get posted on the family fridge in my day. I don't know the girl's exact age, I ballparked nine.

I think that is too young to be out in the "wilderness" of the internet.

I don't know who left the comment. I'm not even sure if it is one person leaving multiple comments or multiple people.

But the second half of your post is what I'm mixed on. I feel like this is along the lines of teaching children that everyone should be popular, and I think that causes issues down the road.

It's not about making them popular. It's more about just trying to make some kid who is being bullied online feel better/public shaming the internet troll(s).

I go back and forth on it. I guess it depends on the bullying and situation.

I think it's a horrible idea. Kids are far too immature and vulnerable to be that exposed at that age.

I agree with this post the most. Way too young to be exposed to the anonymous bull**** of the internet. You can't avoid it all these days, but why not try to protect as much as you can while they're still young?

If her daughter wants to show off her drawings and get some positive reinforcement, I'd suggest the mother just post clips on Facebook. I'd bet some the mom's friends would be nice enough to humor it and leave comments for the kid to feel good about.
