re: Off-Topic
Snow/sleet/freezing rain came through overnight last night. Got up this morning to see schools closed all over and weather man and news media talking about how bad and dangerous the roads were.
I leave early from my house and don't see anything on the roads except an icy spot here and there. But roads, especially main roads are primarily dry. Get to Louisville where they say its worse and same thing, primarily dry roads with icy spots here and there.
I swear they close schools more often now for less inclement weather than when I was a kid. If this system had passed when I was in school, at most we would've been put on a 2 hour delay to let it get light out.I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.
I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

re: Off-Topic
In elementary school, teachers couldn't tell students not to show up, but would be like "If the weather is really bad but school isn't cancelled, if you don't show up, you won't be missing anything important". Of course, you had to have parents phone in still to say you're not showing up, but teachers were much more understanding.
In high school, they would simply be like "give yourself extra time". So many people would be late so often, especially since most took public transportation, and on days like this, they were filled and/or slow to run, so of course people would be delayed. Even on regular days, I'd say the average person who is late is simply late because of public transportation. Easy for school to say "give yourself extra time", because all the teachers drive. You can't predict public transportation.Last edited by Majingir; 02-12-2018, 12:20 PM.Comment

I don't think in all the years I was in elementary/high school, they ever completely shut down due to weather (though many surrounding areas/school boards did close schools, especially if school busses weren't running). At most, halfdays, but even then I never showed up for those days either lol.

Exactly. Now that I'm in college, the game has changed, lol. Last week I want to say it was Tuesday, it was a full-on blizzard. I was sitting in the dining hall, refreshing my email page again and again, expecting to have at least one class cancelled. Nope! Both classes were on. As long as the professor can get to school, you're pretty much expected to make it. And most classes have pretty strict attendance policies.
I remember one time, there was class the final day before Christmas, and it was a big snowstorm. They didn't cancel class, but like 5 people showed up lol. Nothing happened that class, and I'm sure there's probably some unofficial rule like if a certain percentage of people don't show up for a non test day, you can't have anything worth grades.Comment

Those were worst ones too, where class isn't cancelled AND you have marks depending on you showing up/doing work. Harder for college because people obviously don't all live in the area, some can be coming from over an hour away(on a good day), meaning they might spend more time actually going to/from class than they do at class itself.

re: Off-Topic
Same, I went to school in the snow belt (small private college) and had to walk through my fair share of nasty winter weather to get to class as it was never cancelled due to weather. As of my senior year (2003/04) I think classes hadn't been cancelled do to weather since the 70's. Actually, there was this one time my senior year that a local radio station had supposedly announced that the college closed early one Friday due to bad winter weather. Thing is, nobody heard about it until the following Tuesday.Ravens----Yankees----Comic Book JunkieComment
