    I was scolded today at work for using the word "girl" when referring to a woman.

                                                I don't really know the context here. I guess I don't say "girl" much either, but just like there is "girl and boy," there is also "girl and guy" (unless instead you want to say "chick," which I don't think anyone here is about to do). So as much as I say "guy," I hope there is also an appropriate female version to say as well.

                                                That being said, I tend to say "female" or "woman" myself.
