re: Off-Topic
Say you're riding a bike on a two-mile path, the first mile being uphill and the second mile downhill. At best, you are only able to ride the first mile uphill at an average speed of 15 MPH. How fast would you have to bike on the downhill mile to achieve an overall average speed of 30 MPH for that two-mile path?

I am on my Vita right now in the theater about to see Christopher Robin so I can't type forever. Before that I was seeing Mission: Impossible - Fallout again. I wasn't just sitting back and laughing all day, but I am right now.
Below is the closest answer and reasoning though.
Distance = Rate x Time
In order to average 30 MPH over 2 miles, you must cover that 2 miles in 4 minutes.
Spoiler
2 Miles = 30 Miles/Hour x Time
Time = 1/15 Hour = 1/15 x (60 minutes/ 1 Hour) = 4 minutes
If you go 15 MPH over 1 mile, it took you 4 minutes of time (assuming constant rate of speed).
Spoiler
1 Mile = 15 Miles/Hour x Time
Time = 1/15 Hour = 1/15 x (60 minutes/ 1 Hour) = 4 minutes
Ergo....infinity?
I'm not saying my logic is correct. I'm saying that's how I approached the problem.
I don't quite liken that to "no answer" though. I just wanted to do a problem that requires as much logic as that it does math. If you all want true math questions, I have no problems delivering those as well.
And yes, initially Einstein thought 45 MPH.
EDIT: Just saw your post cb. Hang in there man. I won't let this riddle derail your situation man. I really hope he pulls through this!Last edited by Blzer; 07-31-2018, 09:26 PM.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

The logic is correct. You averaging 15 MPH for the first mile would get someone averaging 30 MPH during that same time to complete both miles, so it is impossible to achieve.

Kudos to NolanRyansSnowMonkey as well. We're officially half as logical as Blzer's math students!
Can't even handle any more math/logic problems right now. My brain cells need beer to continue...Comment

re: Off-Topic
So.... what would happen if you did go faster than the speed of light and stayed alive for that second mile? How fast would the average speed be then?
I think i know juuuuuust the perfect thread to pose such a question...Comment

You can ride faster downhill than you can uphill. I was just giving more logic to the situation. I didn't want to include that extra fluff in the problem itself.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

Blzer’s 99 doors explanation made great sense to me. Reminds me of that boy-girl/boy-boy/girl-girl probability question from a few months back.NHL - Philadelphia Flyers
NFL - Buffalo Bills
MLB - Cincinnati Reds

Also of note, the force required to accelerate yourself to light speed approaches infinity, as your mass approaches infinity the closer you get.
But that's at least 2 different threads and no one is interested....Comment
