Got up at 6 yesterday morning trying to beat the heat here in Louisiana. Did 9 miles on the mountain bike and felt so good afterwards I decided to play a round of golf. Needless to say I'm pooped and feeling it today at work but man what great day!!

      That is a full day!

It's officially too hot here to run in the afternoon/evenings; went out last night around 6 p.m. and even with some shade and a breeze it was a struggle. Thankfully we have a pool so I could jump in that and cool off. I'll have to start setting the alarm for 4:30 and getting out the door by 5 if I want to exercise outdoors.

Yeah I should've gotten up earlier so I could be at the trailhead right at sunrise. The mornings are'nt to bad yet, still in mid to low 60's at night and early morning but high 70 's at night and 100* days with 100% humidity are right around the corner.

          Re: 2018 Fitness Challenge

My wife and I just switched gyms, from a local Wisconsin gym(Xperience Fitness) to a national Planet Fitness.

My wife wanted to make the switch because she was on the lowered tiered plan at Xperience Fitness and I was on the higher tiered plan. 10 bucks/month and 20 bucks/month. She couldn't work out at a place near her work or they would charge her.

So, both of us joined the local PF on the 20 dollar plan. I know PF has had their day in the sun with marketing and bodybuilders, but it's really not that bad of a place. The DB weights only go up to 75lbs, but that is plenty for me. There are stations to do squats, dead lifts, etc...I haven't been introduced to their pizza night or bagel morning yet, but I will easily bypass those items. On a positive note, I haven't heard the lunker alarm go off, either. lol.

The only thing Xperience Fitness has over over PF is a pool(which I never used in 5 years) and exercise classes.

I love the Hydromassage Bed at PF after a workout, who needs stretching anymore.

Fit for 40 sounds good to me! It was July last year, right before I turned 39 that I decided I wanted to be in shape for when I turn 40. I've done pretty good. Went from 200 to 160, starting working out at 175 (around October 2017) and have kept it up. I'm not living at a gym or anything, just 3 days a week in my garage, about hour and fifteen minute workout sessions. I started the 5x5 program that tdawg mentioned and it was good to get a nice program. I do those exercises and also usually 2 others that might focus on chest, tricep, or bicep, and then about 100 weighted situps. I'm still very much a beginner at working out because I was starting from zero, having never worked out before. I still don't feel like I am or look very strong, so that keeps my motivation.

But I've been stuck at 160 (I'm 6' tall) for about 3 months so I'm guessing that is my in shape weight although I think I could drop another 5 which I'm really motivated to do over the next two months. I did one of those body fat tests with a body fat caliper and it says I'm 20%, which is the normal range. I really want that to be around 15%, which is considered lean. I cut my running back on non-workout days from 4 miles to about 2.5 miles, so I might try increasing that again to see if that helps with those last few pounds I want to shed. But really I'm not going to change my diet too much more. I stick to a calorie limit and will cheat a day or two a week with ice cream, so I don't know if that is what is going to hold me back on the body fat % scale. But overall I am happy with my progress and will keep up the working out to see if I can get stronger. I did see a video of myself in the pool the other day playing with the pups and it was really noticeable that I'm in better shape which was a nice feeling.

Instead of increasing your mileage when running, look to incorporate sprints instead. That'll help with the BF%.

I was wondering about that. I've always been just running a consistent 11 minute mile (5.5 setting) run because total calories burned was all I cared about, but recently I've been bumping the treadmill up to 9 minute miles (6.5) for the final 5 minutes. I'll start looking at some more fat burning programs to change the intervals for the treadmill and see how that goes. Thanks!

I’ve lost 10 lbs since 5/3 doing intermittent fasting. I allow 8 hrs/day for food and “fast” the other 16 hrs. I’m also cutting added sugar from my diet. Not really working out yet. I like fit for 40. I hit the big 40 next June.

Gonna start a 16/8 fast program on June. I think I can do it but I’m worried about my nighttime snacking. I’ll probably try to incorporate a few test fasts in between now and then.

I’m only 175 but I’d like to get my BF % down.

Adjustable Dumbbells are the best. I've transitioned to kettlebells the past few years, but have thought about investing in a set of adjustable DB's to have around.

                          Re: 2018 Fitness Challenge

So I've been off from the gym for about year now. Can't say there's a good reason, but the normal things and transitions that happen in life have happened and then inertia was too powerful to overcome. But I finally did find my way back into the gym yesterday, and then today I remembered how painful it is on the post-workout days. I don't miss that at all...

Was good to be back in there, though. I've always been a tough 'gym' case, because even when I got stronger, I never really made much in the way of visible gains, so it's tough to stay motivated when you can't "see" the results. I know it's good for me, though, so I'm gonna stick to it. I committed a bunch of money to joining this dam* gym, so not gonna let it go completely to waste.

I do have to find a cardio routine I can stand, though. I've always hated cardio. I might have to hop into one of the free classes the gym has or something, because left to my own devices, I know I won't do it. Oh well - one step at a time...

The problem with working out every other day is that it's the 2nd day where the pain/achiness is at its worst....
