Not really. As usual it’s not a simple answer.

If it’s free just get it.

Creating the flu vaccine is a guessing game every year. There are many different strains of the flue virus so they have to look at epidemiological data to predict which strains are likely to become widespread in a given year to determine which strains to be included for the vacine since they can't vaccinate against them all. But sometimes a new strain that wasn't predicted to be widespread become widespread. Additionally, influenza viruses can mutate rapidly so, as Jr. said, a strain that was covered by the vaccine could mutate to a new form distinct enough from the vaccine form that it won't be recognized by the immune system.

Yeah I didn’t mean to imply that I think it’s 100% effective, but for 30 seconds of your time you could significantly reduce the chance that you get it. It’s a solid cost/benefit imo.

What I don’t like is people guilt tripping others for not getting a flu shot or for getting one. This ain’t about eradicating disease that we know is effective 99% of the time (like the vaccines you should be getting as a child), it’s a scientific educated guess like BurghFan said. It’s easy for either side to claim their side when a vaccine does or does not work for them, ya gotta use your best judgement. No one is awarded a medal for getting or not getting the
Flu shot, and no one should be telling anyone else it’s right or wrong when both can be.

My only opinion on it is, in general, if you are sick don't go to work. Even if it's a minor cold.

It's unfortunate that the majority of employers don't structure their sick day/personal day plans to match accordingly and people have to work. Miss a few days of work and the mortgage isn't getting paid without dipping into savings (assuming you even have that).

I worked with a cold last week.. no real options.

The executives at my work discourage and don't like WFH. Even if someone is hacking up a lung, sneezing their entire mucus membrane out and have a nose that's redder than Rudolph BUT is able to work...oh well for the rest of us.

Those ****ers were probably like “your family and health comes first” when you signed up though...

The logic makes no sense either. Come to work sick so everyone else will get it too instead of letting someone work the week from home to get better and not worry about looking like **** in front of their colleagues.

If that person takes advantage of the freedom, discipline them. Just like if they came to the office and slacked off. But instead companies are taking it away from everyone because some folks can’t handle the privilege instead of treating it as they would any other performance-related issue.

                        I don’t get it.

This is the first time I’ve had anything other than a cold in like 15 years, and my god. This is day four of feeling like a bag of dicks.

Lack of sick days is why people show up to work sick.

Losing money, and basically being looked down upon for missing multiple days is why people push themselves to go in sick.

People don't get sick and recover within a day. If you have a fever or flu, you're out for a few days. But it's not possible to take that many consecutive days off.

Not to mention having to make the sick call. People have to basically explain their illness at times, and hope they don't get a response like "you don't sound so sick".

If I ever ran a company, I'm just having 'off days', no questions asked. No need to say you're sick or just want a day off or whatever. Obviously you have a limit, but no need to fear being looked down upon for taking a day off for whatever reason.

the last time I had a flu shot, it wound up giving me the flu (I was 23). But I promise when I turn 65, I'll start getting the shot every year. Can I request a shot in the backside from a beautiful young buxomness nurse?

I once missed out on a promotion because I had called out sick one day in a calendar year. The three other candidates didn't call out over the same year. I was eliminated early in the process because of that.
