    Re: Off-Topic

Not sure if anybody here follows NASCAR but Ryan Newman's wreck at the end has to be the most frightening I've seen since Rusty Wallace flipping end-over-end almost 20 years ago.

    Hope he's ok.

Yeah that was intense, and his condition being uncertain at this time is concerning. After seeing that and not hearing anything yet, I’d assume it’s a life or death situation. I’m expecting the worst to be honest, and if he pulls through for him to be permanently damaged. Just don’t see crashes like that much anymore in this day and age in NASCAR. That was one of the most violent wrecks I’ve ever seen.

The lack of news is extremely disconcerting.

As soon as I saw it, I thought I was going to be physically sick. It was just awful thinking if I just had just watched somebody die at Daytona, again.

The looks on a lot of the faces reminded me of the day Dale died years ago.

I can't tell you how relieved I am to see that he is in very serious condition with non-life-threatening injuries.

My dad and I were discussing it.

He hits the wall at a 90 degree angle, and as he is spinning on its roof a car t-bones him on the driver's side going at least 170+ mph which flips him over to where the drivers side door is then scraping pavement at 100+ mph.

Its harsh for one of those to occur, much less everything in a matter of 15 seconds. It's by the grace of God he's in stable condition, for sure.

I was gonna say that it didn't quite look like 90 degrees the first time I read the post, heh.

Then again, I watch that Earnhardt crash over and over, and although I know all of the forces at play, it behooves me to this day (by appearance alone) that it's that crash that kills somebody. You see cars pretty much get atomized, burst into flames, flip several times, and they leave without a scratch.

It's a very dangerous sport, indeed. I'm glad it looks like Ryan is in stable condition after that. The other car hitting him on the driver's side was the scary part for me, plus the fact the car was engulfed in flames for quite a while.

To think these are all approaching checkered flags, too. I guess that's where they all get the most aggressive/defensive.

What makes it worse, I think at least, is that Ryan Blaney, the driver who turned him into the fence, wasn't trying to bump him out of the way or anything of the sort. He was actually trying to push him to the win, but caught his bumper wrong and turned him.

Not sure what you want me to calculate. The probability of all 3 evens occurring consecutively or the probability of surviving that impact. Either way, you're getting into probability and would have to take into consideration a whole bunch of other variables.

It's a partially a testament to how much safety has improved over the past 2 decades. Earnhardt's car hit an unyielding concrete barrier and basically went from 190+ to 0 mph in an instant subjecting him to forces the human body just wasn't meant to withstand. Newman hit a SAFER barrier which is designed to have some give so some of the forces are transferred from the car to the wall and his car also kept moving meaning so the loss of energy or inertia or whatever (I suck at physics) was more gradual and he wasn't subjected to as severe of forces.

Anyway, just saw another update on ESPN.com that said he's awake and talking. Still no additional info as to the extent of his injuries though.

The amniote egg evolved ~310 million years ago
Birds evolved ~120 million years ago
The domestic chicken is only a few thousand years old and its wild ancestors probably speciated within the last 1 million years
