Re: CDC Officials Warn of Coronavirus Outbreaks in the United States.

Some numbers I was just thinking about and calculating that I haven't seen reported

From Wikipedia and rounded to the nearest 10 million, China has an estimated population of 1,400,000,000 while the US has an estimated population of 330,000,000 or less than 1/4 that of China while Italy has an estimated population of 60,000,000 or well under 1/20 that of China yet the US just passed China in total number of cases while Italy is about to. Or to put it another way.

China has 81,782 cases or about 5.8 cases per 100,000 residents
USA has 82,404 cases or about 25 cases per 100,000 residents
Italy has 80,589 cases or about 134 cases per 100,000 residents

And those numbers are only going to go up in the USA and Italy. In fact, most of the countries with the highest number of cases will have a case/unit population rate far in excess of that of China

I'm very dubious of any data coming from China; for example, based on their data it was believed that young people weren't really impacted by the virus. Of course, as it has moved around the world that is not the case. Now, it's certainly possible that for whatever reason Chinese young people were not impacted, but I think it's more likely that they didn't report it.

        Thanks man.

Its horrible. My ex-wife is hospitalized with both the virus and pneumonia. I'm quarantined and my 4 year old son is scared, confused, and too little to have to deal with this ****ing ****. I am so ****ing frustrated and feel helpless to do my job in taking care of him, because he, my step-daughter, and their grandma (ex's mom) haven't shown symptoms, but I have in terms of a moderate cough, and running low grade fever, so I cannot be around them as doctor ordered I stay in isolation from them due to symptoms.

I am doing anything I can to occupy my mind, because if I think I lose my focus and just send myself into an anxiety fit.

I know there is no one to blame and I know it happens, but I'm still mad and it makes me even more mad that I have nobody directly to aim it towards.

I'm stuck and until my 14 days are up and I'm symptom free, there isn't a damn thing I can do about it and that pisses me off.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

Possible, there really are a whole lot of variables to consider. Perhaps China only reported hospitalized cases or maybe there are a lot more cases in poorer regions of the country without access to adquate healthcare that were missed. And, as you alluded to, there could be genetic variables present in some populations that alter susceptibility to the virus and who gets the sickest.

Yeah, the case number becomes less and less important when we compare our situation to other countries as we go forward.

How China went from 14k reported in 1 day, to 2k just a couple days later, seems kinda strange.

Damn. Not a particularly close relative, but just found out one of my relatives died from it. He was only 35. Knew he had it and was on a ventilator, last we heard he was improving.

                  Sorry for your families loss.

This was something interesting that I noted from Dr. Scott Gottlieb:

I’m worried about emerging situations in New Orleans, Dallas, Atlanta, Miami, Detroit, Chicago, Philadelphia, among others. In China no province outside Hubei ever had more than 1,500 cases. In U.S. 11 states already hit that total. Our epidemic is likely to be national in scope.

Of course, depends on the accuracy of the data coming out of China.

Not sure the accuracy matters much out of China, likely made up for by the lack of a meaningful response here initially - and worse everything done so far could be thrown away by a sudden push to try and rush 'back to normal'.

Some good news. Apparently 39 million N95 masks have been found. Somebody must have a really big storage closet.

One of the crazy parts of this is looking at the point in time when sports were postponed.

Obviously they did it before things escalated, but I remember in Canada alone it was around 200 cases when we saw nba and NHL shut down. By tomorrow we're probably having over 1000 in Ontario alone (way more than 200 just around Toronto).

I'd imagine the numbers in the US are several if not a dozen times bigger now than they were back when the NBA stopped.

Jesus man. That's too freakin young. Did he have any underlying health conditions?

The above post is from 3/17 as of yesterday 3/26 the total in Maine is now 155. All cities are enforcing a shelter at home policy. We are not to leave our homes unless it's for essential work , supplies , or an emergency. We can go for walks as long as we stay away from other people. It's starting to warm up a bit so I think I'll finish painting the exterior of my house over the next week. Started it in the fall and ran out of time.

I finished my last painting job last Friday 3/20. I have the option to start a new job painting a large warehouse , I went and looked at it Monday, but there are still a dozen or so people working there so I told the owner , thanks but no thanks. Been home playing drums and video games all week. Called the mortgage and credit card companies and explained I'm out of work for the time being and was able to skip next months payments with no penalty. They said to check back in if things do not change.

My wife is still going into the office every day but she is the only one there so that seems safe. This is unlike anything I've experienced in my 60 years on the planet. Crazy stuff. Stay safe everyone.

A lot of talk about not trusting the data from China. How about our own? Read some stories about deaths attributed to pneumonia that probably should be to CV. The way we keep hearing about how there’s thousands of cases that aren’t being reported. I don’t have much more confidence in the accuracy of our own numbers, especially coupled with the half assed fed response to it.
