Re: We need a little Christmas!

Spotify helped out and had some in my Discover playlist. Turns out Carrie Underwood, Meghan Trainor, and Delta Goodrem (who I'd never heard of until a half hour ago) have new albums too.

Nobody's reinventing the wheel with these renditions, but it's always nice to have different versions to throw in the rotation.

What are some good instrumentals of some of the classics? Like big orchestra/symphony styled versions on spotify?

Ones I found seem to mainly just be piano ones or soft jazz versions.

Not something I was expecting at all. I thought Apple bought the rights?

PBS wouldn't have been the network I'd expect that special to air on, especially PBS in the evenings. I dont think I've ever seen anything on PBS before other than their PBS Kids block.

I think there was such an uproar that the specials were no longer on ABC and only on Apple, they comprised and put them on PBS. They showed the Thanksgiving one a few weeks back.

Imo specials like that should always be on TV. I dont mind having the streaming rights on something else, but I dont get taking anything completely off TV.

Even movies and shows you see airing on TV, sure if you have Netflix or Disney+ you can watch it anytime, but they're still allowed on TV.

If you have the streaming service then great, you can watch it on demand. If you dont, then simply wait for whenever it airs on tv to watch or record it.

I'm not gonna take this too far off-topic, but what you point out above is one of the reasons that there might be very few broadly shared experiences for the future generations. It's hard to see how every kid will have seen the same thing (let alone at the same time) when the entertainment world is so scattered and fragmented and locked behind paywalls. I'm not commenting on whether that's good or bad, I'm just saying it leads to fewer nationally shared experiences among generations.

Back on-topic, first presents delivered today, rest should be here by week's end. Then I'm good to go for the big day (sans wrapping, but I usually do that late-night with some brandy or whisky in hand).

I'll say it - it's bad. I agree with you in general, but speaking purely of the Christmas shows, it's hard to see how it would've been avoided. Obviously more channels gave more possible viewing options, which spread out these specials...then you layer in the streaming services now? Yikes.

On the other hand, it's kind of nice that there are enough avenues that most of these things are available (even as crappy quality YouTube uploads) for people who want to find them.

                    ---

Also, I watched Charlie Brown last night, and I never noticed he wore a little Simpsons couch on his head.

I finsihed wrapping all the presents I'm currently planning on giving anyone.

Hardest one was a motion sensor stuffed animal. It has no box with it, so I just wrapped it into whatever weird shape it ended up as. That'll be more fun unwrapping than it was wrapping.

I also just learned that the scene from Elf where Buddy is interacting with people in NY was a legit scene. There weren't extras. Not sure how you could really film people without telling them and then making them part of a scene in a movie though.

No box is still better than trying to wrap some toy that has a cutout on one of the sides instead of being a complete box. So then when you’re done wrapping (conveniently taking enough time to forget about that box) and start putting everything away until Christmas, you can be sure to just poke your hand right through the cutout and ruin the whole thing.

Got a 40% off code for the holidays to order some food. Sure, the app itself jacks up prices by 10-20% anyways, but it's still a savings either way. Good time of the year to order takeout (dining in is overrated imo, and people make a big deal about not being able to right now, ignoring the fact that takeout is still an easy option, but I won't go any more off topic here).

I had other items which were in a box, and it feels so nice to wrap when it's easy like that. This time of the year, all items should just come in full boxes, make it easier on everyone who's buying and wrapping things as a gift.

But if you order multiple items at once, they all end up in the same box.

Although amazon boxes are a great deception tool. Those boxes are always so much bigger than what's in it.
