Probably a dumb question but with these tactics it requires us to custom move each player into their proper position right?

Yes. In order to set players as certain positions, which allow certain instructions to be set, many of them need to be moved from the default formations.

When the CPU works in a bench guy cause of injury does he pick up the same instructions as the starter before him? Or should I manually change this before each game?

I've checked on this. The new player does use the same instructions. The instructions are designated for that specific position, not solely the player.

They should have the same instructions. The reason for checking the AI's formation before games runs deeper than that, though.

Take Chelsea's 3-4-3 formation, for example. If you leave it up to the AI, they're not going to put wing back players in those LM and RM positions, even though that's who you need in there.

So, as crazy as it sounds, it's best to check before each game to make sure the AI is utilizing their tactic correctly.

Is it the best solution? Not even close, but it's what we have to work with.

Assuming it's possible to change someone's position on FIFA through the "Edit Player" on "Customize", you could change the players' position to a wingback.

Worst-case scenario, it's something with the tactics.

I don't think so. I've seen it again with Inter players (vs Juve). Meanwhile, Juve sometimes ping-pongs...

I am starting to think it's better not to go to extreme values. Maybe that's why EA default tactics don't use extremes (to not introduce "undesired secondary effects").

With default tactics, I've seen ping-ponging. You can't erase it.

Regarding the issue I presented: I've played Roma with the default tactic and it remains, so has nothing to do with custom tactics. That's a code issue like it was bursting.

If you use the 2nd controller trick, do you move over EDIT, then move back to the middle pre game?

I downloaded latest update to get mustafi on arsenal and then I edited sheets and started a career. I chose default like you said but then my settings weren't saved and mustafi isn't on the roster? What did I do wrong?

If you go default it goes back to the original launch rosters...make sure to choose 'current customised' to keep all the settings you edited in the menu. Do NOT choose 'download latest' as that will remove everything minus the new rosters.
