Re: How's Your FIFA Career Mode Going?

    Notts County February 2020 Update

This month got started with FA Cup action (need a correction here) in January we played a 2 legged EPL round against Liverpool that saw us advance to the finals in March against Watford. No FA Cup got started with a blazing match against Spurs. This match had us go down 2-0, then we stormed all the way back to take a 3-2 lead. Only to go and end drawing 3-3 forcing a replay match. In the the replay match things were almost as tight as we were able to move with 1-0 win. A little over a week later we had to face Arsenal, we were fortunate in this match to win 1-0. This helped us get to the semis for April.

In Europa play we a round of 32 2 legged match with Galtarssay. Can't spell that. But first match we held on for a 0-0 draw. Then the next we pulled out a squeaker to win 1-0. Allowing to move on to face Villarreal.

In league play we were able to pull out two wins and a draw to stay three points up in first in the table. Next month we have EPL final a couple of league matches and Europa round of 16.

      Notts County March 2020 Update

The month of March opened with us playing Watford in the EPL final. Wembley was treated to excellent match between two teams that wanted to take home that huge piece of hardware. In the end Watford would prevail taking the match and the hardware 1-0. It was bittersweet as we wanted the hardware, but it was the furthest we ever been in my tenure in the EPL.

In league play play we did have a couple of draws, but we got two wins as well. We had another match with Watford just two days after that epic battle in Wembley. This time we had to go to Watford. The club took out a little revenge on the team that had beaten them just two days earlier to win 3-0. This kept us a few points over a hard charging Man U team.

In FA Cup action we had to go up against Bournemouth in order to reach Wembley again. This match was tight to the end. It looked like the defending champions (us) might not make it. But we pull tougher and got the 1-0 to win and return back to Wembley to face Cardiff City in semis.

In Europa league play this month we had to go up against Villarreal. The first played at Notts saw us lose 1-0. The second leg saw the team come alive and was rested better than the previous match to win the match 3-0 and us a 3-1 aggregate win to move on. April will busy be busy as we have five league matches, one FA Cup, and two Europa matches.

The Jacks March - Season 1

        September 11, Match 4

        Swansea 0-0 Chelsea

        MotM: Vincent Koziello

A very even game with the best chances being a shot from distance off the post from Barrow and Willian missing the target from close range with a volley. Lukas Klostermann made his debut while Fran Villalba made the bench.

        September 20, EFL Cup

        Reading 0-1 Swansea
        69' Dolberg (Cork)

        MotM: Jack Cork

Jack Cork's ball back across to Dolberg was enough to secure the win against Championship side Reading. Dolberg had come close on a couple of occasions beforehand and made this one count.

        September 24, Match 5

        Swansea 0-0 Manchester City

        MotM: Alexander Kolarov

A poor game in all honesty. Baston's shot that Caballero got down to save was the only thing that really happened. Fer was also forced off with an injury late on.

Leroy Fer broke his ankle and will miss 3 months of action.

        September 27, Match 6

        Southampton 2-0 Swansea
        33' Samaris, 90' Boufal

        MotM: Cedric

Samaris' first time effort and a Boufal screamer condemned us to our first defeat of the season. We actually had more chances but either Forster was there to save or the Southampton defenders managed to get in a vital block.

Overall a solid start with points and clean sheets against both Chelsea and City. The loss to Southampton was frustrating but they have started well so far. Good to see Dolberg get his first goal for the club which also meant we progressed to the next round of the EFL Cup.

          Season 5

          The Mariners

          February 2021

          Tottenham Hotspur 1 - 2 Grimsby Town
          TOT - Bojan 88'
          GRI - Amang 28', Sacko 67'
          MOTM: Hourihane

Another month starting off with a 1st vs 2nd match up against Tottenham, and once again it lived up to the hype. We scored in the first half with Hourihane playing Amang through up the middle and he was able to strike it first time into the bottom left corner. Sacko then doubled our advantage after Wolf sprinted down the left side past the defense and sent the ball across the box for him to tap in. With time winding down our keeper was able to save a shot from distance and push it towards the outside, but a Tottenham player was the first to it and he crossed it right away and Bojan was able to control it and direct it into the goal to cut the lead in half. It was too little, too late though and we held on for the win to complete our double over Tottenham for the season and give us an advantage in what could be a very interesting title race.

          Grimsby Town 3 - 0 Crystal Palace
          GRI - Wolf 10', Amang 56', 90
          MOTM: Amang

We took it straight at Palace from the start, and they never really seemed to stand a chance against our assault. Kessie played a perfect ball through the middle for Wolf and he put us ahead early with a well placed shot back across into the bottom left corner. In the second half Amang doubled our lead after he took the ball from the defender and let it fly from distance into the top left corner. He then completed his brace by tapping in the rebound from Wolf's shot that was saved by the keeper.

          F.A. Cup Round of 16
          Grimsby Town 1 - 1 Liverpool FC
          GRI - Hourihane 79'
          LFC - Stewart 19'
          MOTM: Kessie

We defended poorly in the first half, and that cost us the win when it was all said and done. Stewart started the scoring after Liverpool caught us in a 2 vs 1 situation and he was able to use that space he was given to launch his shot across the goal and into the top corner. It looked like that score was going to be enough, but we finally got some luck and Kessie played Hourihane the ball and he then attempted to make another pass but it was blocked and it fell straight back to him and he was able to catch the defender trying to recover and he get into the gap and slotted it home for the equalizer.

Champions League Round of 16 Leg 1
          PSV 2 - 1 Grimsby Town
          PSV - Ramselaar 20', 45'
          GRI - Banton 54'
          MOTM: Ramselaar

A really poor first half cost us the draw and possible even a win. Ramselaar opened it up by practically walking past our defense and slotting it inside the near post. He then added another by controlling a corner kick at the edge of the box and then firing it inside that same post as his first. We fought hard for a goal of our own and eventually Vieira was able to get the ball to Banton in the middle of the box and he turned to put his shot into the back of the net and grab an all important away goal for us that will hopefully pay dividends after the 2nd leg.

          Grimsby Town 3 - 0 Norwich City
          GRI - Amang 6', Kessie 12', Hourihane 30'
          MOTM: Wolf

Our damage was done early, and the rest of the match was a compilation of near misses and smashing the post. Amang started it off with a run down the right side of the box before cutting it back around the defender and getting his shot off inside the far post. Kessie bagged our second with a strong shot that was touched by the keeper, but not enough to turn it back outside. Our third goal came after a great run of passing and Hourihane ended up with the ball in front of goal and he fired it off the keeper and in once again.

            Season 1

            Club in Crisis

            February 2017

            Doncaster Rovers 2 - 1 Blackpool FC
            DON - McCullough 13', Williams 37'
            BLP - Philliskirk 31'
            MOTM: Philliskirk

I am sick and tired of the stupid mistakes leading to goals for the other team. Doncaster took the lead early after our keeper punched a ball out straight to McCullough and he fired it home from distance while our keeper was still off of his line. We found an equalizer though by way of a penalty and Philliskirk tucked it away even with the keeper getting a hand on it. That didn't last long before Mellor over-committed on an interception attempt and they had numbers going ahead and Williams finished it off with a strong header off of a cross for the lead.

            Blackpool FC 0 - 0 Newport County
            MOTM: Mellor

We didn't have any defensive mistakes this time, but our performance in front of goal on the other end was rather lacking. Newport only took two shots in this entire game, and we dominated every aspect of it. We put a good number of shots on goal, but nothing was getting through as their keeper kept making save after save to deny us the 3 points.

            Accrington Stanley 2 - 1 Blackpool FC
            ACC - Roco 34', Kee 66'
            BLP - Vassell 58'
            MOTM: Kee

I swear, if we could cut out all of the goals we've conceded from shots outside of our box then we would be right up there at the top of the table. Roco was the culprit this time firing from the edge of the area and our keeper could do little to stop it. Vassell got it back for us though after getting around the right side of the defense and he fired it back across off the far post and in. Then not even 10 minutes later Kee was able to get in front of his man right in front of goal to tap in a low cross for the deciding goal.

            Blackpool FC 1 - 1 Stevenage FC
            BLP - Cain 31'
            STE - Kennedy 48'
            MOTM: Cain

Stevenage were admittedly the better team, and a draw is something we will have to be content with. Cain opened the scoring after Taylor laid off a free kick from the edge of the box and Cain struck it first time into the bottom right corner. We took our advantage into the half, but it was just on the other side of the restart that Kennedy was able to chest down a cross and then finish it on the near post in a fluid motion.

            Blackpool FC 2 - 1 Crawley Town
            BLP - Rose 9', McAlister 37'
            CRA - Collins 66' (PEN)
            MOTM: McAlister

It feels good to finally get in the win column again. We had a good control on this one and would have won pretty comfortably if not for a silly penalty we gave away. Rose was the first to score getting down the left side and firing from an improbable angle across the goal and off the post and in. McAlister then doubled our lead by tapping in the rebound off of Philliskirk's shot that was saved onto the post. In the second half Foster conceded a penalty trying to slide in to stop a back post shot on a cross and Collins was able to tuck it away to pull one back. We were able to hold on afterwards though and take the win.

Re: How's Your FIFA Career Mode Going?

Alright, it's finally time for some long over-due feedback. By the way, is good old Chico still alive?

Tex - Blackpool: it's painful to go through your results with all those losses there. It seems like your defence is having a hard time while your attackers aren't scoring that much. Judging by your results, your 3-5-2 isn't working too well. I'd suggest trying five-at-the-back out, or giving a basic 4-4-2 a go. The former should at least make your defence more solid. Also, I think you can still string a few wins together to reach the playoffs. I believe in you!

Grimsby: First of all, congratulations on winning the Premier League in your first season in the top tier! That's a great achievement! Even better, you are well under way to lift the league trophy again. Amang seems to be scoring quite a few goals for you, and your entire offensive trio appears to be doing well. If I recall collectly, your keeper isn't rated that highly. Is he just doing much better than his overall would suggest?

Keano - Hell yeah, that's what I'm talking about! My boy Koziello is in the lead! Draws against Chelsea and City are impressive, but scoring only a single goal against a Championship side is slightly worrying. How are your attackers performing?

Poulka - You're doing really well, leading the league and lifting the League Cup! Good run in the Europa League, too. What is your starting eleven like?

Rabbit - Newport: Ringdall Stövland is a beast! I remember how his performances were underwhelming a few seasons ago, and now he's a huge offensive threat. Good progression there. It was disappointing to see you drop out of the top 4 at the end of last season, but playing in the Europa League is still impressive for a recently-promoted side, and your results are very good this season. How are Süle and Embolo doing? Also, good luck with Wales!

Barcelona: I was shocked when I saw you go to Barcelona! Now you have really made it to the footballing elite. As one would expect, you've done very well so far, although Betis' unbeaten league run is keeping you behind them. I'm seeing quite a bit of Messi and Müller's names on the scoreboards, but not much Neymar. Is he underperforming?

Hedges - Very strong January with Arsenal, and you're also top of the table. Impressive! Griezmann is a great signing, and I'm expecting him to bang quite a few goals in for you.

SMH - Hopefully this career with Zenit will finally work out for you. They have some very interesting players so it should be a fun career.

Josh - Shame about your PES series, but I understand your decision as recording those matches certainly takes a long time.

              ***

That seems to be pretty much everything from the last ten-or-so pages. Pardon me if I missed someone.

Blackpool has been frustrating, and I've tried all kinds of formations to try to fix things but they all just let goals pour in. The frustrating part is that literally the majority of the goals I've had scored on me have been long range shots. The sliders I'm using have made those ridiculous it seems and these League 2 teams are hitting balls off the volley from outside of the box into the top corner. Right now I am just focusing on using my 2 CDM's to try to close out any space whatsoever and it's getting a little better but occasionally they will turn me and let it fly and that still gets me.

Grimsby has been a lot of fun, and as you said my attacking trio is awesome. Using their initials I like to call them my S.A.W. attack. The keeper is getting better, and he is currently a 71. The key to my defense though has been using tall, strong, physical defenders as well as having my midfield players all have some decent strength as well. That lets me control the ball some more and push their players around and keep them from getting comfortable.

                  Season 5

                  The Mariners

                  March 2021

West Ham United 2 - 0 Grimsby Town
                  WHU - Calleri 83', Navarro 90'
                  MOTM: Calleri

It's absolutely ridiculous that we were forced to play a reserve side for this game. The FA has decided to schedule our replay against Liverpool the very next day after this game. Even with our reserves though we controlled the match, but we just couldn't put the ball in the back of the net. Then in the closing minutes the wheels fell off when Calleri ran up the middle of the box to get on the end of a cross and direct it past our keeper. Then Navarro added a second to put the game away with a great first time shot from the middle of the box into the left side of the goal.

F.A. Cup Round of 16 Replay
                  Liverpool FC 1 - 3 Grimsby Town
                  LFC - Moreno 45'
                  GRI - Hourihane 16', Wolf 33', 44'
                  MOTM: Wolf

Despite playing 2 games in as many days, we were able to see out the win here and advance to the quarter finals. Hourihane opened the scoring by being in the right place at the right time after Sacko's shot was saved and he was on hand to tap it in. Wolf then doubled our lead after Sacko played him the ball as he ran into the box and he slotted it home easily. Wolf then completed his brace after Amang played him down the left and he was able to finish it low to the far post. Then just before half we made a mistake and failed to clear a ball and Moreno was able to jump on it and win the ball before firing it past our keeper. It wasn't enough though and they failed to pull any more back after that.

                  AFC Bournemouth 1 - 3 Grimsby Town
                  BOU - Wilson 73'
                  GRI - Vieira 49', Cole 61', Kelly 77'
                  MOTM: Cole

The first half was rather uneventful, but once the seal was broken in the second half the goals started to fly in. Vieira is the one who broke it after having his long attempt blocked by the man in front of him and it fell right back to his feet and his second effort was well placed across the goal into bottom corner. Cole was the next to score after Bennett tackled the ball away from a defender and it came to Cole and he let it fly from the edge of the box with a perfectly placed shot in the bottom corner on the near post. Bournemouth were able to pull one back though with Wilson doing well to hold off a defender on his back until he could turn and fire it past the keeper. But the hopes of a comeback didn't last long and Cole was able to win the ball from a defender and then played Kelly through on the right and he finished it past the keeper to double the lead once again.

                  F.A. Cup Quarter Final
Grimsby Town 0 - 3 West Ham United
                  WHU - Obiang 20', Calleri 42', Ayew 87'
                  MOTM: Lanzini

We chose to go with a reserve side here in order to play our first choice team against PSV in our second leg of their Champions League. That decision cost us dearly here, and we have to hope that we can overcome our 2-1 deficit against the Dutch side in order to make the decision worth it. Obiang stared off the scoring by trapping a cross down and then slotting it home on the back post. Calleri scored the second after getting the ball on the right side of the goal and his shot was deflected by the keeper, but still carried over across the line. Ayew then officially put us to rest with a stunning long range shot into the top right corner.

Champions League Round of 16 Leg 2
                  Grimsby Town 3 (4) - (2) 0 PSV
                  GRI - Wolf 14', 58', Sacko 70'
                  MOTM: Amang

It cost us the FA cup, but the resting paid off when we came into our match against PSV. We were a goal down, but had an away goal so we felt confident going in, but the first leg was rendered pointless in the end. Amang played Wolf through on the left and he slotted it past the keeper to open the scoring for the game, and all we had to do was hold strong and keep them off the score sheet and we would advance. Amang then played Wolf through once again in the second half and he finished almost exactly the same as the one before and our lead was doubled, as well as taking a lead on aggregate. We weren't done yet though and Hourihane was able to play Sacko through on goal and he beat the keeper easily to cap off an impressive night for us.

                  Grimsby Town 1 - 2 West Brom
                  GRI - Wolf 70'
                  WBA - Rondon 23', Vela 49'
                  MOTM: Kamada

We probably deserved more out of this, but that's football for you. Rondon started off the scoring with a stunning first time shot as he ran into the box and smashed the ball into the top left corner. It didn't take long after the restart for Vela to get on the end of a cross as he ran past his marker and had a simple finish past the keeper. We did manage to pull one back though after Kamada played Wolf around the left edge and his first shot was saved up into the air and he rose up to head the rebound into the net. We weren't able to grab an equalizer though and we dropped some points that hopefully won't come back to haunt us.

                  Aston Villa 1 - 2 Grimsby Town
                  ASV - Gil 3'
                  GRI - Amang 15', 19'
                  MOTM: Amang

Hard to believe that all of the action in this game happened inside the first 20 minutes of play. We fell behind early, but luckily Amang found his shooting boots once again and he made the difference for us. Gil was the one who took advantage of us early as we had a complete breakdown defensively and he ran free onto the back post to get the ball and then finish it quickly on the near post. It didn't last though and Sacko led a counter for us before laying the ball off for Amang in the box and he finished it first time across the goal into the corner. Then just a few minutes later we were working the ball around their box and Morris was able to find Amang at the top of the box and he lined up a powerful shot into the top right to give us the lead that would hold the rest of the way.

                    Season 1

                    Club in Crisis

                    March 2017

                    Luton Town 0 - 2 Blackpool FC
                    BLP - Yeates 37' (PEN), Elliott 80'
                    MOTM: Yeates

Luton out shot us in this game, but we forced them to take shots that had little to no chance of beating our keeper. We got on the board in the first half after Sheehan slid and cut down Elliott inside of the box as he chased down a through ball and Yeates converted from the spot. In the second half we were able to put the game away late after a great series of passing led to Yeates playing Elliott through on the right and he slid down to direct his shot across the goal off the post and in.

                    Blackpool FC 1 - 1 Yeovil Town
                    BLP - Elliott 25'
                    YEO - Butcher 40'
                    MOTM: Elliott

The stats showed a pretty even game, and the result mirrored that as well. We were the first to score with Vassell getting down the left and sending a ball across the box that Rose hit back towards the other post and Elliott was there to tap it in. Our lead was canceled out before the half was over though and Butcher got played through past our back line and he had an easy finish past our keeper for the equalizer. The second half brought no further scoring and the game ended with a point for each team.

                    Blackpool FC 4 - 0 Mansfield Town
                    BLP - Potts 18', Redshaw 23', Cain 34', Payne 72'
                    MOTM: Cain

We controlled the game from the first whistle and Mansfield barely got a sniff of the goal after a great chance in the opening minutes. Our first goal was a bit of luck as Potts got around the left side of the defense and fired a shot at goal that took a bounce off the defender's leg and looped over the keeper as he dove. Redshaw doubled the lead after Foster played him around the right side and he finished low back across the goal to the far post. Our third goal was the most impressive when Cain lined up a free kick and curled it over the wall and into the top left corner in an impressive display of skill. Payne then capped off our night when Gnanduillet played him through on goal and all he had to do was beat the keeper and make it 4 for us.

                    Plymouth Argyle 2 - 2 Blackpool FC
                    PLY - Brunt 4', 85'
                    BLP - Vassell 27', Elliott 88'
                    MOTM: Brunt

Frustrating result and we really deserved more from this. We were the better team and it took some lucky bounces and a once in a life time shot for them to get the point. Their first goal came off of a corner and we failed to clear it out allowing it to get back to the taker and he dribbled in to the box and picked out Brunt for the simple finish. We equalized after Payne cut the ball back on the left and found Vassell running into the box for a first time strike to the far post. Late in the game we gave the ball away and Plymouth picked it up and played it ahead to Brunt and he hit the bouncing ball off of the half volley from way outside of the box and it found it's way into the top corner. We didn't give up though and Cain was able to play Elliott through on the right and he finished low across the keeper into the bottom left corner for the equalizer.

                    Leyton Orient 1 - 2 Blackpool FC
                    LEY - Kelly 50'
                    BLP - Elliott 3', Yeates 90'
                    MOTM: Elliott

It took until the final minute to grab the winner, but it seemed a long time coming. We started it off right away with Elliott firing a shot from distance, but it took a slight deflection off the defender and that was all it took to put the keeper out of position and give us the lead. Just 5 minutes after the restart Kelly got the ball at the edge of the box and almost had it tackled away, but the ball stuck at his feet as the challenge came in and he was able to gather himself and then let it fly into the top corner. With almost no time left, Rose played the ball to Yeates and he raced around the left to get his shot off back across the goal and inside the far post for a fantastic winner.

                    Blackpool FC 2 - 1 Grimsby Town
                    BLP - Elliott 11', Vassell 69'
                    GRI - Berrett 45'
                    MOTM: Foster

The first half was one of the most dominant performances we've ever had, but we squandered most of our chances and had to do some work in order to grab the win. We started it off by hitting Grimsby on the counter and Foster played the ball to Elliott and he used some pace to get past the defenders and finish low across the goal. Instead of grabbing a second goal that we so deserved, we instead found ourselves tied after Berrett smashed his shot from inside the box and it hit off the crossbar and went down and in. We were able to find the winner though with Foster again playing the role of provider and sending a ball across the box where Vassell was waiting on the back post to knock it in.

Yeah I'm only playing 6 minute halves on default legendary and both sides have been struggling to score. I'm going to bump it up to 7 or 8 to see if we can get some goals.

                            ***MANAGER REMARKS***
Goals dried up a bit in February, but the Gunners still sit atop the league table heading into a very busy March. The opportunity for a treble remains alive, as they’re still fighting in the Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup.

March will see Arsenal play 5 games the first 15 days of the month, with a huge away match in the Champions League at Juventus. The first leg ended 1-1 at The Emirates, so this one could go either way.

The Gunners have done a great job remaining healthy (for once), and Alexis Sanchez still leads the league in goals, Ozil leads in assists, and Cech leads in clean sheets. Arsenal will be looking to secure all 12 points available in March, and put this title race on ice.

I would suggest maybe trying a 4-3-2-1 and play Sanchez at LF and Griezmann at RF along with a traditional striker inbetween them. This would help to give those outside guys a lot of chances to go through on goal by playing a little more centrally, but it doesn't take away your width at the same time. I've been using this formation with Grimsby and my attacking trio is tearing it up (I set them all to stay central and get in behind).
