Re: How's Your FIFA Career Mode Going?

    Season 6

    The Mariners

    October 2021

    Chelsea FC 1 - 0 Grimsby Town
    CHE - Batshuayi 90'
    MOTM: Baba

That was one of the most frustrating ways to end a match. For 90 minutes we battled to an even stale mate with Chelsea, and then in the final minute a corner gets knocked around and ends up on the edge of the box and gets played straight ahead to Batshuayi and he first timed it past our keeper for the only goal of the match.

    Grimsby Town 3 - 1 Newcastle United
GRI - Wolf 10', Dembele 50' (PEN), Morrison 87' (PEN)
    NEW - Aarons 21'
    MOTM: Sidibe

It took some penalty luck, but it was a deserved result. Wolf opened up the scoring early after Kessie played him through on the right and he kept his shot low and across the goal. Newcastle found an equalizer after a first shot bounced back off the post and Aarons was right there to knock in the rebound with the keeper still on the ground. Just minutes into the second half the referee awarded us a penalty and Dembele stepped up and powered his shot into the top left corner. Then again in the closing minutes we were awarded another chance from the spot and Morrison was the one to convert this time with a strong shot into the top right just past the keeper's reach.

    Europa League Group Stage
    Napoli 1 - 5 Grimsby Town
    NAP - Dumitru 90'
    GRI - Sacko 21', Wolf 45', Morris 86', Cole 90', 90'
    MOTM: Cole

After that embarrassment against Rangers this was a much needed result. Sacko started us off after Morrison played him down the right and he beat the keeper on the far post. Just before the half Wolf doubled the lead after timing his run perfectly for Sacko to play him through and then finished quickly past the keeper. Then all hell broke loose in the final minutes. Cole played the ball to Morris overlapping into the right side of the box and he slotted it low across the goal to the bottom left corner. Then Vieira timed a perfect through ball for Cole down the middle and he had to slide down to direct it past the keeper. Dumitru grabbed a consolation goal for Napoli after getting the ball on the edge of the box and he took a touch to set himself up and then fired it into the top corner. But we had time for one more and Morris used a cheeky back heel to set up Cole on the right side of the goal and he finished back across to the far post.

West Ham united 0 - 1 Grimsby Town
    GRI - Banton 36'
    MOTM: Bennett

It wasn't the prettiest of wins, but it was a win nonetheless. There wasn't a huge array of chances from either side, but we got the one that counted and that was all we needed. Kelly broke free down the right side and he sent a low ball across the goal where Banton was on the back post for the tap in. That ended up being the only action of the night in terms of scoring.

    EFL Cup Round of 16
    Aston Villa 0 - 2 Grimsby Town
    GRI - Quiroga 14', Konate 25' (PEN)
    MOTM: Quiroga

This was a pretty straightforward match for us and Villa barely gave us any challenges throughout the entire 90 minutes. Quiroga started us off after Banton played him the ball on the left and he made a great turn to get around the edge of the defense and then fired his shot across the goal to the far post. Then Amavi made a poorly timed tackle on Phillips inside the box and the referee pointed to the spot and it was Konate who stepped up to tuck it away for us and double the lead. The game didn't hold much action afterwards and we saw it out comfortably.

    Grimsby Town 1 - 2 Southampton FC
    GRI - Morrison 45'
    SOU - Austin 9', Acosta 78'
    MOTM: Morrison

We were outplayed in this one from the sound of the first whistle. The fact that we still had a chance until late to come out with a point was more than we deserved. It wasn't even 10 minutes in that we had our first break down on defense and allowed Southampton to outnumber us going forward and after some movement of the ball it was an easy finish for Austin in front of goal. Right before the half Morrison had his first shot blocked and for some bizarre reason the keeper decided to push it back into play before it could roll out and Morrison just had to fire it into the open net. In the second half Acosta decided the game with an impressive shot from distance as he smashed the ball from the edge of the box into the top corner.

Re: How's Your FIFA Career Mode Going?

      Season 2

      Club in Crisis

      October 2017

      Checkatrade Trophy
      Blackpool FC 2 (3) - (4) 2 Exeter City
      BLP - Gnanduillet 12', 80'
      EXE - Harley 41', James 45'
      MOTM: Gnanduillet

We took it to penalties and then came up short in heartbreaking fashion. We were the first ones to take the lead when McMahon's shot was pushed away by the keeper, but Gnanduillet was the firs to run in and tap it in as the keeper was still recovering. Then the closing minutes before half are what killed us. First the ball was tackled away from our player on the edge of the box and it was played across to Harley and he hit it first time from distance perfectly into the right side of the goal. And if that wasn't impressive enough the next one was right up there with it when James chested down a clearance just a couple of yards outside of the box and then hit it on the half volley into the top left corner. We were running out of time when Storey took out Gnanduillet in the box and the referee awarded us a penalty that he converted into the bottom left corner. The game went to penalties, and we came up short having one saved and missing another wide while our keeper was only able to keep out one of theirs.

      AFC Wimbledon 0 - 1 Blackpool FC
      BLP - Vassell 18'
      MOTM: Payne

It took a disallowed goal in the final minutes, but we held on to get the win. We did our work early with a great counter attack that resulted in Payne finding Vassell running free down the left side of the field and he slotted it past the keeper for the only goal of the match. Wimbledon pushed us hard for the equalizer but with a combination of good defense and a little bit of luck we were able to take all 3 points.

      Blackpool FC 3 - 2 Rotherham United
      BLP - Yeates 36', Gnanduillet 57', McAlister 90'
      ROT - Newell 32', Yates 40'
      MOTM: Payne

These long shots are getting ridiculous. We have to find a way to shut them down, but the fact that these players are hitting them off volleys, first time, and pretty much any other way is just too much. We fell behind in the first half when Newell ran up the channel between two of our defenders and got the ball on the edge of the box and fired his shot into the top left corner. Yeates equalized with Payne playing him down the left side of the goal and he finished low past the keeper. That didn't last long though and Yates smashed a first time shot from a couple of yards outside of the box perfectly into the top right corner. We managed to grab another equalizer with Payne once again being the one to set it up and he found Gnanduillet down the right and he beat the keeper on the far post. In the very last minute Yeates was able to play McAlister down the left and he had to let it fly a little earlier than he would have wanted as the defender closed out, but it was placed perfectly into the bottom right corner for the deciding goal.

      Bolton Wanderers 1 - 0 Blackpool FC
      BOL - Wilkinson 30'
      MOTM: McAlister

We really should have played better, but we fell into the same old habits with our finishing. Their goal was unlucky on our part as well. The sent in a corner and when it was shot towards our goal it looked like a routine save for our keeper but for some reason Payne slid in and deflected the ball and Archer wasn't able to get a clean grab on the ball and Wilkinson ran in to tap it in. We can't afford to give up cheap goals like then when our attack is missing in action.

      Blackpool FC 3 - 2 Peterborough
      BLP - Philliskirk 34', Vassell 78', Magennis 81' (PEN)
      PET - James 25', Forrester 42'
      MOTM: Vassell

We stayed persistent and didn't give up and it paid dividends at the end. We fell behind first when James got the ball on the back post and then slotted it between our keeper's legs with a shot that should have been saved. We tied it back up less than 10 minutes later when Payne played Philliskirk around the right and he finished back across to the far post. Peterborough took the lead on us once again though before the half with Forrester getting away from his man in the box and finishing a cross with a first time strike past our keeper. Late in the second half we were able to equalize after Foster sent a perfect cross to the back post for Vassell to finish off from just a couple of yards out. And then the game was decided after the referee pointed to the spot to award us a penalty from a rash challenge and Magennis powered it into the top right corner as the keeper remained frozen in place.

      Coventry City 2 - 1 Blackpool FC
      COV - Yeates 55' (OG), Gadzhev 70'
      BLP - Magennis 81'
      MOTM: Magennis

Another lackluster performance, and we dropped points once again. We kept Coventry off the the score sheet through the first half, but then in the second half our luck turned against us. We cleared out a corner and Coventry recovered it and let a shot fly from distance but it was going well wide until Yeates jumped up and let it hit his butt and it rebounded back inside our post. They then doubled the lead after some nice passing got Gadzhev running unmarked into the box and he finished it inside the right post. Late in the game we were able to pull one back and give ourselves a chance with Vassell sending a cross in from the left and Magennis launched himself at it to head it into the back of the net.

        League Match 15
        Newport County - Southampton (1-1)
        Tadić 6'
        Farfán 45+2' (pen)

Jefferson Farfán scored on a penalty kick in stoppage time of the first half and The Exiles' skipper helped his side come back from a surprising early deficit. Dušan Tadić's on-target shot in the 6th minute deflected off Kurt Zouma giving Jasper Cillessen no chance to help Newport County avoid trailing early on. Both squads had chances to go ahead in the second half but they had to settle for a draw.

Euro League - Group Match 6
Newport County - SK Sturm Graz (2-0)
        Gersbeck 2' (Leya Iseka)
        Ince 16'

The Exiles' B-squad scored a couple of goals in the first 16 minutes and their defense completed a clean sheet as Newport County's second unit completed an undefeated run in the group stages of the UEL.

        League Match 16
        Liverpool - Newport County (1-2)
        Wijnaldum 11'
        Guerreiro 19' (Gordon)
        Guerreiro 53' (Gordon)

Raphaël Guerreiro picked an excellent time to score a brace for the first time in his Exiles' career and his scoring was just enough for Newport County to steal three points against a Liverpool squad that is a contender again this season after struggling to be competitive the last couple of seasons.

        League Match 17
Newport County - West Brom (1-1)
        McManaman 66'
        Ringdal Støvland 73' (Amavi)

The Baggies played a classic Tony Pulis game, scoring on their only shot on goal and keeping The Exiles to just a single goal out of their six shots on target. West Brom earned an important point at Rodney Parade as they look to stay out of the relegation zone.

Andrew Robertson pulling on RS' jersey wasn't enough to stop The Norwegian Tank from scoring.

        League Match 18
        Sunderland - Newport County (0-1)
        Mandron 18'

Mikael Mandron scored on Sunderland's only shot on goal and The Exiles failed to score to suffer a frustrating defeat at the Stadium of Light. Newport County took 9 shots, more than half of them on target but they just couldn't get the ball past Vito Mannone.

        League Match 19
Newport County - Swansea City (2-2)
        Gyömbér 19'
        Fry 42'
        Moore 52' (Nabiullin)
        Van Hout 90+1'

Willem Van Hout, an Exiles' academy graduate, scored a ridiculous crossing shot from outside the box in stoppage time to help Newport County's B-squad salvage a draw against Swansea City. Giovanni Marcellino called on his B-squad to face the worst team in the league at the moment but The Swans, who were 0-0-8 on the road this season coming into this game, came out determined to show they're not done fighting to stay in the BPL after this season.

        League Match 20
        Newport County - Sunderland (3-0)
        Farfán 64' (Moore)
        Ince 90' (Farfán)
        Farfán 90+3' (Guerreiro)

The Exiles were on the verge of yet another frustrating result but their skipper put the team on his back in the last third of the game and when the final whistle blew the fans at Rodney Parade were celebrating a sounding victory. It was a much needed win for Newport County who were carrying a three-game winless streak.

Farfán made sure Sunderland didn't get the best of his side again.

        1. Szczęsny (Arsenal) - 9
        T2. Leno (Manchester City) - 7
        T2. Forster (Southampton) - 7

Analysis: The Exiles were tested with six league games this month and while they were far from perfect they managed to continue to accumulate enough points to actually jump up one spot in the standings, getting past Arsenal who also had a difficult month of December (2-2-2 record). However, league leaders Manchester City did not struggle this month and doubled their points lead over Newport County to double digits. History suggests Man City will be difficult to catch up over the remaining 19 games of the season and it'll be interesting to see whether any other club will be able to close the gap. While he would love to compete for a league title, Marccelino's first goal this season is to qualify into the Champions' League after three consecutive seasons playing in the UEL and he has his club in a good position to accomplish that goal this season. Newport will face Celtic, the current Scottish champs, in the Round of 32 of the UEL.

Individually, Farfán considering retirement continues to be baffling after he had another outstanding month. The team's captain is now among the league leaders in scoring and continues to be such a valuable asset for the team. Ideally for the club he would had shown what way he's leaning on retirement so they can proceed appropriately in the winter transfer window but they'll have to try their best with the information they have now.

In academy news the club added prospects from all three nations they scouted (United States, Cameroon, and Northern Ireland).

        The Academy
(listed by their ranking in it)

RM - Tobias Perez (66 OVR, 88-94 POT): This 17-year old from France has turned out to be a great find. Scouts unanimously agree he has potential to be special and he is now the top prospect in the academy. He possesses outstanding pace (78acc/73spd) for his age to go with excellent balance (73) and curve (76) on the ball.

ST - Kwame Mayat (60 OVR, 84-94): 17-year old from Cameroon who is physically strong, and by physically strong we mean 6'3", 189lbs and some impressive physical traits. Mayat may be the most impressive physical specimen ever signed by Newport' academy, showcasing strength (78), aggression (78), jumping (75), and pace (75spd/73acc). If he can reach his potential by matching his striker skills with his physical skills he'll be an amazing player.

RB - Ohon Aduamah (589OVR, 81-94): 15-year old from Cameroon oozing tons of talent and potential at a very early age. Described as physically strong, Aduamah displays excellent aggression (81) and strength (77) to go with the jumping (75) and stamina (75) of a play-time ready prospect. He seems to have sufficient pace to play the position.

RB - Tony Turner (56 OVR, 80-94): 17-year old Yankee standing at 5'10", 154 lbs. Turner possesses excellent agility (76) but isn't too developed as a defender which is where his training will focus right off the bat.

CDM - Pierre Tägtström (60 OVR, 83-89): 16-year old from Sweden who is next in a great lineup of defensive midfielders developed by the club since Marccelino's arrival. Described as physically strong, Tägtström's exciting potential is undeniable and he displays eye-popping aggressiveness (91) towards the ball. At his age and with the club's depth at the position he should be able to spend time developing in the academy without any rush.

RB - Ohon Ankrah (55 OVR, 76-94)*: 16-year old prospect from Cameroon who is more of a well-rounded prospect at this point in time. Ankrah is defensive minded and physical enough for the position, currently standing at 5'7" and 154lbs.

CAM - Jason Lavery (52 OVR, 75-94)*: 17-year old prospect from Northern Ireland described as a playmaker. The lefty Lavery stands at 5'9" and 143lbs is considered the next big prospect at his position.

CM - Abraham Lamptey (51 OVR, 75-93)*: 17-year old prospect from Cameroon who is defensive minded. Lamptey checks in at 6'1" and 169lbs and although he projects as an all-around midfielder his physical look make him a CDM prospect in The Exiles' diamond.

CAM - Matt Lampson (48 OVR, 76-94)*: 16-year old prospect from the United States whose pace (73acc/71spd) is his most notable asset. Lampson is a raw prospect and will need to work hard in the academy.

LW - Andre Domingues (58 OVR, 77-83): 16-year old from Portugal who is starting to lose the rawness of his game and slowly creeping towards his great potential. His top attribute continues to be his pace (75acc/70spd), although his agility (73) and balance (71) are also notable.

LM - Collin Taylor (55 OVR 73-87): 16-year old American prospect described as a playmaker. His most outstanding skill is his agility (75) which is noticeably better than any other skill he has at the moment.

CDM - Andy Tandia (54 OVR, 75-81): Yet another defensive midfielder prospect, this 17-year old prospect from France currently projects as more of a future backup for the club.

CM - Dean McKay (47 OVR, 69-85)*: 15-year old prospect from Northern Ireland identified as a playmaker. McKay is very raw but even with that he shows outstanding agility (73) which should come in handy for his position.

GK - Aaron Keegan (48 OVR, 70-82): 15-year old American prospect who projects as more of a backup after showing a higher potential on the scout's report.
        * Recent addition

Billel Cissé (ST, 60 OVR) was promoted to the senior roster at his request. He's an exciting prospect who joins a crowded depth chart but shouldn't have much trouble working his way up it.

        January Schedule
        1/2: vs Norwich (F.A. Cup)
        1/5: at West Brom
        1/8: at Hull City
        1/15: vs Arsenal
        1/29: at Spurs

January's schedule will not be as filled but it will keep all clubs plenty busy with the beginning of the winter transfer window. The Exiles will need to show better form against bottom-dwelling teams like WBA and Hull before their form is truly tested by Arsenal and Tottenham.

        Stay tuned

We Try. We Fail. We Win.

          January 2020

          Transfers Out

          Max Christiansen,
          CDM, 78 ovr, 23 y/o,
          €9.5M to Hamburger SV

Christiansen spent a few years at the club, but he was never able to break into the first team after joining us from Ingolstadt. The few times the defensive midfielder got playing time, his performances were underwhelming. HSV were willing to pay just under €10 million for Christiansen, and we bade him goodbye.

          Transfers In

          Jean-Philippe Gbamin

79 Ovr, Defensive Midfielder, 24 Years Old, France

          €15,800,000

The only player we purchased this January was the French-Ivorian defensive midfielder Jean-Philippe Gbamin. We decided to invest quite a bit of money in replacing - and improving - the quality we have on our bench for the defensive midfielder position. Gbamin, who can play in quite a few different positions, will hopefully prove to be a strong and talented defensive anchor for us.

          ***

          Hertha BSC 2 - 0 1899 Hoffenheim
          Duda 39', Selke 50'

Our #10 put us ahead late into the first half with a powerful shot into the top right corner, and the leading top scorer of the league, Davie Selke, doubled our lead early into the second half with a curling shot.

          February 2020

          Hertha BSC 0 - 2 Bayern München
          Pastore 20', Depay 75'

Well, this was unexpected. Underperforming Bayern were superior in every single way compared to us, and they completely deserved the win. Javier Pastore put the Bavarians ahead from a cross in the 20th minute after our defenders had left him completely unmarked, and 15 minutes before the fulltime whistle Memphis Depay netted the second of the night with a beautiful freekick. We can't afford to play this poorly if we want to win the league.

          Hertha BSC 1 - 0 FC Schalke 04
          Mor 63'

Just as pretty much every game between us and Schalke, this was a proper low-scoring grind, mainly fought in midfield. The only goal of the match was scored by our Turkish loanee Emre Mor after he had cut in from the right flank to curl the ball into the top left corner of the net.

          Quarter Final
          VfL Bochum 0 - 1 Hertha BSC
          Darida 86' pen

We will play against Borussia Mönchengladbach in the semi finals.

          RB Leipzig 0 - 1 Hertha BSC
          Selke 88'

Another low-scoring game, but this one also ended in our victory. It took 88 minutes for either side to find the back of the net, and luckily it was our striker Selke who did that. Mitchell Weiser played a perfect low cross into the box, and Davie Selke had an easy job tapping into the back of the net.

          Round of 16, 1st leg
          Hertha BSC 1 - 0 Stoke City
          Platte ?'

I'm not sure which minute Platte scored in since I had an accident with my notes, but that shouldn't matter too much. The important thing is that, in yet another single-goal match, we were able to beat Stoke and not concede any away goals in the process. This game had quite long periods of nothing in it, but at least we have an advantage going into the second leg.

          My Thoughts

          League Play -
We are still leading the league by a very large margin, and I'm not too worried about us possibly dropping some points during the remaining season. If you ask me, the title is already in our bag. This is mainly due to our extremely strong defence which has conceded less than 15 goals in the league. Niklas Süle gets an honorable mention for being our best defender who saves us several times each game.

One thing which worries me about our performances in the Rückrunde, or the second half of the season, is our very sloppy finishing. The chances are there, we are just not bagging them in. As you can see, pretty much all games in which we scored had only a single goal in them.

The Pokal - One game, one goal, one win. That's our tally from the DFB Pokal, or German cup, for the last two months. Gladbach, our opponent in the semi finals, will be a tough opponent, but I think we can beat them.

Transfers - As I wrote above, Max Christiansen was sold because he wasn't playing well enough, while Gbamin is a replacement for him. With Salif Sané getting soon into his 30s, Gbamin might be able to break into the starting eleven.

I was also thinking about signing someone to replace Per Ciljan Skjelbred, our captain and CDM who will retire after this season. After quite a bit of thinking and planning, I decided not to sign a replacement for him. Instead, I moved our Czech #6, Vladimir Darida, to his (real-life) preferred position of a box-to-box midfielder, which is the position Skjelbred occupied. This move also gives our #10 Ondrej Duda the possibility to shine as our other attacking mastermind together with Mitchell Weiser.

          ***
At this moment, I have got one match left in April and a few more in May. I'll finish the season this week and post the end-of-season update later on. That post will have the rest of the season in it.

Thank you for reading this post! I hope you have enjoyed it! Any feedback or suggestions will be appreciated!

            Season 6

            The Mariners

            November 2021

            Europa League Group Stage
            Rangers FC 2 - 3 Grimsby Town

            RAN - Crooks 45', Samuel 84'
            GRI - Dembele 6', Wolf 29', 31'
            MOTM: Wolf

We handled that match fairly easily, but then we started to lay back too much after building a lead and it almost cost us. We started it off in the opening minutes with Sacko playing Dembele around the left and his shot hit off the far post but came right back to him for the easy clean up. Then Wolf came alive after he ran in on the back post as the keeper saved a shot from Dembele and it fell right to him and he headed in the rebound. Just a couple of minutes later Wolf scored again after Morrison played him through on the left and he slotted it past the keeper to the far post. Right before the half we let Crooks get behind our defense and he finished with a great shot around the keeper into the top right corner. Then in the second half they pulled another one back after we let them take the ball off of our defender inside our own box and even though Johnstone saved the first shot, Samuel was there to head in the rebound before he could recover. Luckily the self imposed bleeding stopped there and we held on for the win.

            Tottenham 0 - 2 Grimsby Town
            GRI - Kelly 45', Cole 58'
            MOTM: Morris

This was a big match against top of the table Tottenham, and with a reserve side we went into London and took care of business. Pretty much the entire first half went by with nothing of significance, but then right before the break Cole found Kelly on the right and he fired a low shot past the keeper that probably should have been saved, but he caught Lloris at just the right time that he wasn't able to react in time. In the second half we doubled our advantage with Morris sending in a free kick and Cole flashed to the ball and rose up to head it into the back of the net. We shut it down after that and these will be 3 big points.

            Grimsby Town 1 - 0 Everton FC
            GRI - Wolf 11'
            MOTM: Kessie

We did our work early, and that ended up being all that was needed in this match. Kessie attacked down the center before playing it out wide on the left to Wolf and he took it wider than he was expecting but still lined up a fantastic shot to the far post from a tough angle that ended up being the only goal of the match. Both sides wasted a few chances afterwards and we weren't able to extend the lead and they could find an equalizer either.

            Europa League Group Stage
            Grimsby Town 1 - 1 FC Midtjylland
            GRI - Dembele 37' (PEN)
            MID - Onuachu 39'
            MOTM: Kessie

If not for a lapse in our focus directly after scoring, we would have taken the win. Sacko was taken down with a poorly timed tackle by Ibsen Romer and after the referee pointed to the spot Dembele stepped up and powered it into the back of the net. Just 2 minutes later we let Onuachu dribble right through our defense and he went through on goal and placed a shot that hit off the near post and went in for the equalizer. The rest of the game was a scoreless affair and it ended in a draw.

            Aston Villa 1 - 2 Grimsby Town
            ASV - Estupinan 20'
            GRI - Cole 38', Hourihane 86'
            MOTM: Hourihane

It was a tough fight to grab the 3 points using our reserves once again, but a stunning free kick made the difference in the closing minutes. Estupinan was the one to open the scoring after having his initial shot blocked by the defender and then following it up by placing it into the bottom right corner. We found an equalizer before the half was over though with Cole using his pace to go on a great run around the left side of the defense and he finished back across the goal. In the closing minutes we won a free kick just a yard outside the box and Hourihane was the one to curl it over the wall and into the top right corner with an absolutely stunning free kick.

              Season 2

              Club in Crisis

              October 2017

              Blackpool FC 2 - 1 Northampton FC
              BLP - Payne 36', McAlister 74'
              NOR - Hoskins 29'
              MOTM: Payne

After some early magic from Hoskins it looked like we were going to be in for another one of those nights. Northampton send a cross to the edge of the box and Hoskins met it with a stunning volleyed finish from distance into the top right corner. It was a once in a lifetime goal, and unfortunately for us that lifetime was now. It only took minutes to find an answer though and after drawing a free kick outside of the box Payne laid it off for Payne to strike from way out and it flew into the top left corner. The game was decided after McAlister came on and used his fresh legs to make a run through the defense and into the box on the right side and he slid it low past the keeper for the winner.

              Walsall FC 0 - 3 Blackpool FC
              BLP - Taylor 51', Magennis 75', 86'
              MOTM: Magennis

A red card early in the second half for Chambers was not only the foul that led to our opener, but also allowed us to keep pouring in more goals while remaining comfortable. Taylor stood over that free kick and curled it over the wall and into the top right corner with an inch perfect shot. Magennis doubled our lead after Potts played him the ball on the right and he used his first touch to make a great turn and then slotted it across into the bottom left corner. Then with Walsall doing everything they could to pull one back Daniel was able to play Magennis through on the right and he finished across the goal with a nearly identical finish to his first one.

              Blackpool FC 0 - 2 Crewe Alexandra
              CRE - Dagnall 22', Hollands 85'
              MOTM: Dagnall

A disappointing performance for our home fans. We need to find ways to entertain more when at home, rather than bore our supporters to death. They opened the scoring in the first half with a great switch of play that led to a quick ball through to Dagnall and he had an easy finish on the near post. Hollands then put the game to rest after he made a run into space and got the ball on the left side of the goal with only the keeper to beat and he tucked it away with a tidy finish.

              Port Vale 0 - 1 Blackpool FC
              BLP - Yeates 45' (PEN)
              MOTM: Yeates

Yeates took a knock early in this one, but he toughed it out and ended up playing all 90 minutes and scored the winner. Just before the half we had a break into their box and as their defender came out to challenge he slid, but went through Daniel who was off the ball in the process. The referee quickly pointed to the spot and Yeates stepped up to power his shot into the top right corner as the keeper dove the right way but came up just inches short.

We Try. We Fail. We Win.

                        March 2020

                        Hertha BSC 1 - 1 FC Augsburg
                        Selke 58'
                        Claessen 21'

This was one of those games where the opponent had 3 shots and scored with one of them, while we had 11 shots and only netted 1 one of them. As I've said before, we need to be more clinical.

                        VfL Wolfsburg 0 - 0 Hertha BSC

Boring, boring, boring. There is no other way to describe this goalless encounter.

                        Mainz 05 0 - 1 Hertha BSC
                        Selke 29'

                        Round of 16, 2nd leg
                        Stoke City (0) 0 - 1 (2) Hertha BSC
                        Mehmedi 19'

Two legs, two goals, two wins; that's the story of our round of 16 fixture against the reigning Europa League champions Stoke City. Admir Mehmedi scored an important away goal early on, and from there on neither side looked interested in playing. Next up: Manchester United.

                        Hertha BSC 1 - 0 Bayer Leverkusen
                        Weiser 38'

A good way for Hertha, the current league leaders, to beat Leverkusen, Bundesliga champions of last season. Our pacy winger Mitchell Weiser scored the winning goal with a shot into the bottom left corner of the net a few minutes before the end of the first half.

                        April 2020

                        Hamburger SV 0 - 0 Hertha BSC

My God, this was the dullest game I had played in a long time. After long and boring 90 minutes, the numbers on the scoresheet were still both zero. The number of total shots on target was only two larger.

                        Hertha BSC 2 - 1 Borussia Mönchengladbach
                        Weiser 17', Mor 88'
                        Guidetti 4'

What a nice way to turn the game around. Gladbach's John Guidetti was left unmarked in the box as our defence was shambolic, and the Swedish striker had an easy job in shooting the ball into the goal from a few metres away. We did well to come back, though, and Mitch Weiser equalised soon. The boys from Berlin continued to push hard until our efforts were rewarded in the 88th minute. Emre Mor got into the box and shot the ball into the bottom right corner of the net to win us the three points.

                        Borussia Dortmund 1 - 1 Hertha BSC
                        Götze 23'
                        Esswein 48'

I'm still embarrassed by the goal we gave away. Peter Pekarik played a slow diagonal pass inside the box, but Mario Götze got his foot to the ball and smashed the ball into the back of the net. Luckily we managed to equalise early into the second half when Mitch Weiser played a perfect cross into the box for Alex Esswein to head into the goal. The result remained like that for the rest of the game, and we came away with a point. Not too bad.

                        Quarter Final, 1st leg
                        Manchester United 2 - 0 Hertha BSC
                        Eriksen 58', Mkhitaryan 90'

Man United were head and shoulders above us in every way possible. Paul Pogba, Paulo Dybala, Antoine Griezmann, Eric Bailly, and co. completely hammered us in this match. The few attacks we had were either stopped by Bailly, or the shots were saved by David De Gea in goal. Somehow it took until the 58th minute for United's Christian Eriksen to break the deadlock with a curling shot into the bottom left corner of the net. Half an hour later Henrikh Mkhitaryan doubled their lead with a low first-time shot from the edge of the box which flew right into the bottom right corner of the goal. We will have to play as well as we can to beat the Red Devils in the second leg.

                        Hertha BSC 3 - 1 Hannover 96
                        Darida 21', Platte 41', 52'
                        Clemens 24'

                        Quarter Final, 2nd leg
                        Hertha BSC (2) 2 - 0 (2) Manchester United (4-5 after pens)
                        Darida 9' pen, Selke 22'

Oh no, what a painful way to drop out of the Champions League! We fielded a 4-2-2 instead of our usual 4-2-3-1, and the new formation worked wonders in the first 22 minutes as two early goals by Vladimir Darida and Davie Selke pulled us level on aggregate. There weren't too many scoring opportunities in the next 70 minutes, and the game went into extra time. Thanks to our defensive-minded approach, nothing happened there, either, so the game went on to penalties. Our first penalty proved to be fatal as Ondrej Duda smashed it into the woodwork. Manchester United then put all of their penalties into the goal, eliminating us. Even though going out like this is bitter, I'm very proud of the fight we put up.

                        Hertha BSC 1 - 1 VfB Stuttgart
                        Platte 13' pen
                        Ginczek 31'

                        Semi Final
                        Borussia Mönchengladbach 0 - 2 Hertha BSC
                        Demirbay 78', 84'

We are through to the final! After 77 minutes of inaccurate shooting, we were finally able to break the deadlock as Kerem Demirbay broke free and curled the ball into the top left corner of the net from the edge of the box. Our German-Turkish attacking midfielder got his brace a few minutes later from a counter attack. Thanks to Demirbay's amazing performance, we will play our second Pokal final in two years. This time it will be against RB Leipzig, the most hated club in Germany.

                        May 2020

                        Davie Selke
has suffered a torn quadricep muscle in training, and he will miss 8 weeks of action.

                        FC Ingolstadt 0 - 2 Hertha BSC
                        Platte 88', Demirbay 90'

                        VfL Bochum 0 - 0 Hertha BSC

We could've secured the league title with a win against bottom-of-the-table, but I guess the pressure got to us. Neither side created many chances, and we'll have to wait to secure the title.

                        Hertha BSC 3 - 2 Eintracht Braunschweig
                        Platte 49', Pekarik 62', 90'
                        Ofosu-Ayeh 54', Abdullahi 66'

That's it, WE HAVE WON THE LEAGUE! A single point from our second-to-last league game would've been enough to secure the title, but the beautiful team of Hertha BSC earned the tree points in dramatic fashion in our last home game of the season. Felix Platte put us ahead early into the second half, but Braunschweig's Ofosu-Ayeh equalised a few minutes later from a spectacular through ball. Under ten minutes after that our right back Peter Pekarik scored his first goal in a couple of seasons with a header, but yet again Braunschweig equalised just a few minutes later. The Old Lady, as our nickname goes, pushed forwards for the win, and finally we were rewarded in stoppage time. Mitchell Weiser got inside the box on the right and tried to pass the ball to Platte in the middle, but an Eintracht defender got his foot onto the ball. However, he didn't clear it properly and it rolled over to Pekarik. Our Slovakian veteran didn't hesitate and he took a shot which found its way into the back of the net. That is how to win the league in front of your home fans!

                        TSG Hoffenheim 0 - 0 Hertha BSC

This game was pointless for us, and the scoreline shows that. The result also didn't affect Hoffenheim, so neither team really pushed hard for the win. The best part about the match? The end, because that's when our title celebrations began.

                        Final

                        Platte 31', 90'

And like that, WE HAVE WON THE DOMESTIC DOUBLE!!! There really isn't a better way to finish the season off than to lift a second major trophy in front of our home, the sold-out Olympiastadion. We controlled the match, and Felix Platte was on top of his game. The German attacker got the winning goal at the half an hour mark after Admir Mehmedi's shot bounced off the crossbar, and Platte finished his second of the evening with a header from Weiser's cross. A great way to conclude the season, and a great way for Per Ciljan Skjelbred to finish his career off!

                        My Thoughts

                        The Double! -
Drinks are on me, boys, we've done it! It took me four interesting seasons, but Hertha BSC have won the Bundesliga! We started the season off strongly, and we didn't slow down since then. I'd say our victory is completely deserved.

What's better than winning the league? Winning the league and the cup. After a couple of poor-ish performances in the cup, we picked up speed from there and beat Leipzig in fine fashion to lift the trophy for the second season in a row. Oh, and I was chosen as the Bundesliga manager of the year. Yay!

Players - Niklas Süle has been an absolute rock at the back. Jean-Philippe Gbamin is starting to get more and more playing time as he has been performing on a high level. Duda and Weiser have been important pieces of our attack, while Selke scored in pretty much every other game. Also, Per Skjelbred has now retired.

On the other hand, Salif Sané has been inconsistent and is about to lose his starting spot to Gbamin. Admir Mehmedi has been underwhelming on the left, and all of our attackers should be more clinical. Yet again scoring goals was a problem for us, which you can see in the amount of goals we scored in the league. Luckily our defence was world-class once again.

Transfer Plans - I'm thinking about replacing Mehmedi with a younger winger, and I have a couple of candidates in mind. A central midfielder for squad depth purposes might also be something I'll look into, but that's not high up on my list. As far as selling players goes, I don't have any particular players I want to get rid of.

Last Season? - It's possible that the upcoming season will be my last in charge of Hertha, and after that I'd start a new career with another team. However, for that to happen I would have to win the treble. Can Hertha do it? There's only one way to find out.

                        Transfer Budget: €46,000,000
                        Wage Budget: €150,000

Next up should be a squad review.

Thank you for reading this post! I hope you have enjoyed it! Any feedback or suggestions will be appreciated!

                          The Mariners

                          December 2021

                          EFL Cup Quarter Final
                          Colchester United 1 - 3 Grimsby Town
                          COL - Fenton 56' (OG)
                          GRI - Harris 20', 49', Griffiths 90'
                          MOTM: Osadebe

We advance once again, and now we are one step closer to the final and a chance at the trophy. Harris started the scoring after Quiroga played him down the right and he took the ball out wide and shot from an impossible angle and somehow put it inside the far post. Quiroga then set up Harris once again at the top of the box and he dribbled into space and placed the ball back across his body into the bottom left corner. Colchester did pull one back with a bit of luck as Johnstone saved the shot but it kept moving towards the line causing Fenton to have to slide in and try to clear it away before it went in, but his touch knocked it over the line before he was able to then kick it away and it harshly went down as an own goal. We officially put it to rest in the final minute with Osadebe playing Griffiths the ball on the right side of the goal and he placed it nicely into the bottom left corner.

                          Sunderland 3 - 1 Grimsby Town
                          SUN - Mbakogu 14', Rodwell 72', Stojiljkovic 82'
                          GRI - Sacko 30'
                          MOTM: Kessie

We were very unlucky to get a loss today, but at the end of the day we have to do better in front of goal in order to get results. Sunderland opened the scoring after we couldn't get a ball cleared and it ended up getting played ahead to Mbakogu on the right and he fired it across the goal to the far post. But we equalized before the half was over with Kessie playing the ball down the right side to Sacko and he placed it low around the keeper to the left side of the goal. In the second half Rodwell gave them the lead with a powerful low driven shot from way outside of the box down into the bottom left corner. Stojiljoviv then finished us off by dribbling into space to the edge of the box and then wrapping his left foot around the ball and powering it into the top right corner.

                          Europa League Group Stage
                          Grimsby Town 1 - 1 Napoli
                          GRI - Wolf 66'
                          NAP - Milik 29'
                          MOTM: Sacko

It was a draw, but it was all we needed to secure our place as the group winners. We fell behind in the first half after some poor defense let them outnumber us in our box and it led to Milik having an easy shot from the middle and he was never going to miss that. We were able to fight back though and find an equalizer when Sacko found Wolf running free towards the back post and he slotted it around the keeper into the bottom right corner and that was all we needed.

                          Grimsby Town 1 - 1 Middlesborough
                          GRI - Banton 18'
MID - van der Heyden 90'
                          MOTM: Banton

That is a frustrating way to drop points by giving up a goal on essentially the last kick of the match. We got our lead in the first half with Hourihane playing the ball to Banton on the left and he lined up his shot and fired it low across the goal to the far post. It looked like we were going to grab the win, but in the last minute they sent a cross into the box and van der Heyden had lost his man and got on the end of it for a first time volleyed finish into the back of the net.

                          Crystal Palace 0 - 2 Grimsby Town
                          GRI - Kamada 34', Sacko 75'
                          MOTM: Kamada

This was a good win, and it was much needed in order to keep us in the mix at the top of the table. We found the opener after Wolf picked up a cleared corner and he passed it ahead to Kamada cutting around the left side of the defense and he placed it across the goal inside the far post. Sacko doubled the lead in the second half after Kamada played him through and he used his pace to continue past the defense and beat the keeper on the left side of the goal.

                          MOTM: Morrison

The result was never in doubt and we dominated QPR in every stat you could measure. We started the scoring after Morrison split open the defense with a great pass to Dembele and he went through on goal and had an easy finish to finally break his scoring drought. In the second half Wolf doubled the lead after a great solo run through the defense before getting around the right side and finishing back across to the left side of the goal.

                          West Brom 0 - 5 Grimsby Town
                          GRI - Kelly 18', 29', 80', Cole 58', Banton 90'
                          MOTM: Kelly

We fielded a reserve lineup and yet we still looked to be in an entirely different class than West Brom. Kelly was the star man on the night and he opened the scoring after Morris played him the ball and he turned around the right side of the defense and fired it back across to the far post. He doubled the lead not long after when Kelly played him through on the right and he beat the keeper with a well placed shot. Cole then added one of his own after Vieira played him the ball inside the box and he used the dummy run of Banton to draw the defense's attention and he took it himself around the left and finished back across to the right. Kelly then completed his hat trick with Morris playing him the ball and he went left this time to his weak foot and still finished back across around the keeper. Banton got into the action late as he chased down a long ball that was played ahead and he got there just ahead of the defense and then finished past the keeper.

                          MOTM: Kamada

A great way to end the month with another strong win. We opened the scoring right before the break when Kamada got past the defense on the right and sent a ball into the middle of the box where Wolf was waiting to redirect it into the goal. In the second half Matip made a nasty challenge on Kamada in the box and was shown a straight red before Sacko converted from the spot to double the lead. They did manage to pull one back after Caulker made a huge error in judgement as he went up to defend a low cross and managed to just end up kicking it into his own net. With just a few minutes remaining Paterson played a through ball that caught the defense by surprise and Konate got through and finished around the keeper to put the game to rest for good.

                            MOTM: Vassell

Vassell fired us through to the next round with a brace as he took home man of the match for this one. His first came from Evina getting down the left and sending a cross in to the middle that Vassell met on the near post and powered a header past the keeper into the back of the net. The rest of the match played out rather uneventful until the final minute when they threw everyone up including the keeper on a corner and after we cleared it away, Vassell was the first to get to it and he sent it into the open net to complete his brace.

                            Gillingham FC 0 - 1 Blackpool FC
                            BLP - Payne 67'
                            MOTM: Payne

Gillingham was poor in this one and we probably should have won by more than just the single goal we scored. We completely smothered them defensively and 7 of their 8 shots weren't anywhere close to the target. After a scoreless first half we finally caught them out on the break with Vassell cutting inside and finding Payne on the back post and he slotted it back across the goal for the deciding goal of the match.

                            Chesterfield FC 1 - 3 Blackpool FC
                            CHE - Evans 83'

                            MOTM: Vassell

Our form continues with another convincing win away from home. It took only 3 minutes to open the scoring after Payne tapped in a rebound from the keeper saving a shot from Yeates. Vassell doubled the lead after Magennis made a beautiful pass over the top of the defense straight to Vassell running into the box and he easily beat the keeper on the right side of the goal. Vassell completed his brace and put the game out of reach in the second half after Foster sent a nice looking cross into the box and he was able to head it home past the keeper. Chestefield did grab a consolation goal after Taylor scuffed his clearance attempt on a header and it fell to Evans on the left side of the goal and he quickly fired it into the back of the net.

                            MOTM: Demetriou

We were beyond poor when it came to creating any chances. We didn't even trouble their keeper by putting a shot on target, but luckily our defense was in good form and we were able to save a point from this. It was a bit of a disappointment considering the run of form we have been on, but the fact that it wasn't a loss certainly helps us in the standings.

                            Blackpool FC 0 - 1 Walsall FC
                            BLP - Makris 4'
                            MOTM: Makris

I'm embarrassed by the performance we put in in front of our own supporters. We took just a single shot the entire match, and there is absolutely no excuse for that poor of a performance. Makris decided the game in the opening minutes after he got the ball running to the right side of the goal and he took advantage of some abysmal defending and cut the ball back inside and finished on the near post. Everyone might as well have left then since nothing happened the rest of the match.

                            Blackpool FC 2 - 1 Chesterfield FC
                            BLP - Daniel 52', Potts 81'
                            CHE - O'Shea 56'
                            MOTM: Potts

This was a much improved performance and we were clearly the better side this time. The first half was scoreless, but in the second half we finally broke the deadlock with our pressure forcing them to give the ball away to us and Yeates played it straight ahead to Daniel on the left side and his first shot was saved, but he tapped in the rebound after it fell right back to him. That lead didn't last long and just minutes later a cross went into the box and O'Shea slid down to meet it and knocked the ball into the ground causing it to bounce over our keeper as he dove. It looked like we were going to have to settle for a draw until Osay-Samuel burst down the left side of the box and played a ball into the middle where Potts was waiting to direct it into the back of the net for the win.

                            Blackpool FC 3 - 0 Rochdale AFC
                            BLP - Bennett 20', McMahon 84', Gnanduillet 90'
                            MOTM: Magennis

This was as straight forward as it gets and there was rarely any doubt about what the result would be as the game went on. Bennett put us ahead in the first half after Magennis laid the ball off to him as he made a run into the box and he used a well placed shot from just inside the edge of the box into the bottom left corner. Rochdale didn't offer much of a fight after that and in the final minutes we put the finishing touches on it when Magennis tracked down a cleared corner and started the counter for us ultimately laying it off to McMahon to tap in on the back post. Gnanduillet capped it off for good measure with Magennis once again playing the provider and finding him unmarked in the middle of the box and all he had to do was pick a corner and place it there.

                            Gillingham FC 1 - 2 Blackpool FC
                            GIL - Dack 81'
                            BLP - Yeates 43', Osayi-Samuel 90'
                            MOTM: Vassell

This was an entertaining match and took until the final minute to decide the outcome. We got the lead just a couple of minutes before the break when Vassell pulled the ball back on the right side of the goal and laid it off to Yeates who hit it first time into the bottom left corner. Gillingham fought hard to find an equalizer and their efforts finally paid off late with Dack making a great run behind our defense and finishing on the near post. In the final minute though we pushed forward and Vassell was able to find Osay-Samuel running into acres of space on the right and he continued on towards goal and fired his shot off the keeper and in for the winner.

We made this game a lot harder than it really should have been. We created some good chances, but each time we sent the shot wide. That came back to bite us when Acosta struck a low driven shot from yards outside of the box and placed it into the bottom right corner just before half. The second half didn't bring much improvement to our shooting woes and just when it looked like we were going to leave empty handed, Quiroga payed Banton into space on the left side of the box and he slotted it around the keeper to the right side of the goal.

The last thing we needed was a replay, but now another fixture gets added to our schedule and we will have to figure out a way to handle that. Combined with having drawn Arsenal in the EFL Cup semi-final this month that has 2 legs, we will be playing them 4 times. There's not much to say about this game as the scoreline shows, it's certainly disappointing to not have created any clear cut chances for ourselves.

This was an ideal scoreline to walk away from the first leg with, especially since those are both away goals that should prove valuable. We opened the scoring after Bellerin slid straight through Morrison inside the box and the referee pointed to the spot and showed him a straight red for his efforts. Sacko tucked it away after sending the keeper the wrong way and we took an early lead. In the second half Vieira set up Wolf and he lined up his shot and let it fly with power and the keeper should have done better but it ended up going off his arm and in. The only downside was that we lost Paterson to a red card after a rash decision on a tackle in the final minute of the game.

It just wasn't our day. The attack was stagnant, the defense was confused, and everyone seemed a little tired. Our defense got caught getting too aggressive and they got through on goal with a 2 on none advantage allowing Lanzini to dribble all the way in and finish on the near post. We were probably lucky not to concede another, but the damage was done already and the scoreline stood with just the single goal on the day.

It would have been nice if we could have just done this the first time around, but we got the win and we move on so there's no point getting hung up on it now. We took the lead in the first half off of a corner when Morrison sent it to the near post and Paterson was there to meet it and flick it on off the far post and in. We then wrapped it up in the final minutes with Kamada getting around the right side of the defense and he sent the ball across the box to Wolf who was waiting on the far post to tap it in.

It looked like we were heading for an undeserved loss, but we found some late game magic to not only grab an equalizer, but the winner as well. We fell behind after we cleared a ball away, but it was played straight back up to Ward on the edge of the box and he blasted a shot into the top right corner that gave Thomas no chance at keeping it out. We went almost the entire game floundering around trying to find the back of the net, and finally Morrison was the one to pull it back for us after Wolf played him into space and he drove the ball across the goal into the bottom right corner. Just a few minutes later Morrison played the ball to Kamada running across the top of the box and he got around the defense before turning the corner and placing it around the keeper for the win.

We relaxed too much late, but the result was all but locked up by that point anyway. Cole opened the scoring after Banton shot from the left side and the keeper got down to save it, but straight to Cole who tapped it in. Quiroga then doubled our lead after tackling the ball away and then Cole gave it back to him on the left and he finished across the goal. The managed to pull one back with a stunning goal from Musa after they laid a free kick off from him and he smashed it first time into the top left corner. Oxlade-Chamberlain then equalized with a run to the back post to tap in a grounded cross. Unfortunately for Arsenal they needed two more because of the aggregate and it is us that will advance to the final.

They were the first to get on the score sheet after a long shot rebounded off of our crossbar and Stojiljkovic was running in to the box at just the right time and was able to head it into the goal. Just before the break we found an equalizer with Kessie playing Dembele through up the middle and he finished it off on the near post. In the second half we got our winner when Kessie played the ball to Wolf and he made a great turn to get around his defender and go through on goal and he finished back across to the bottom right corner.

Poor defense and poor execution in front of goal on the other end is a bad combination if you are trying to win games. We fell behind early in the second half when Aneke got on the end of a cross and powered the header past our keeper. Powell then doubled the lead late in the game after he ran into space on the back post and got the ball to finish with a perfectly placed shot off the far post and in. We finally pulled one back in the final minute with Gnanduillet turning around the defense and firing his shot into the top right corner.

                                MOTM: Cotterill

Birmingham assaulted our goal and the result was inevitable. We started off with some hope as Evina opened the scoring after Vassell played him down the left and he placed it perfectly across the goal to the far post. Birmingham found the equalizer though with Kieftenbeld getting through on goal and firing his shot inside the right side of the goal. Maghoma then replicated that almost exactly with a shot of his own after getting through and we found ourselves down now. They kept on pouring it on though and Cotterill put the dagger in after he got the ball on the right side of the goal and fired it to the far post to etend their lead.

Neither side really deserved to win and the scoreline was a good representation of how the game was played out. Archer had a fantastic game in goal and made sure to keep out anything that they did manage to get past our defense. We had our chances as well, and Magennis really should have converted a late shot after he was through on goal but their keeper came up with a huge save.

                                MOTM: Foster

A point was more than we deserved, but I won't complain about the result. They opened the scoring through James after they came out with a 50/50 ball and sent it ahead to James and he finished on the near post with a shot that should probably have been kept out by our keeper. We found an equalizer though just minutes later when Yeates played Vassell through and he sent a slow roller past the keeper into the corner. Luck continued to go against us when off of a corner Archer made a save on a shot, but the rebound fell right to Hughes and he has an easy finish into an open net. In the final minute Foster was able to get some space on the right and he sent a ball into the box for Philliskirk to finish first time to the far post.
