Athletic Club Bilbao announced their first two signings under the new manager Gancherribia. The new players are 24 years old Javier "Javi" Ros (on the left) and Markel Bergara (on the right), aged 27, both of course Basque, and both were bought from Bilbao's biggest rival, Real Sociedad. The young central midfielder Javi Ros cost Gancherribia's side only €1,2 million. Bergara, who's a defensive minded midfielder had a price tag of €3,2 million. Both of the players have come through Sociedad's youth academy and according to them it was a tough choice to leave their childhood team. Both of the players weren't crucial to Sociedad and the club was ready to sell them for a good price.

"I'm sad to leave Real Sociedad but they didn't need me. Then Bilbao contacted my agent, told us about their plans and I was convinced to join the club. I hope the fans will understand", commentend Ros.

"This is business. I have still years left of my playing career and it would have been stupid to stay at Sociedad. My agent got contacted by a lot of clubs but Bilbao was the most interesting of them. I think Gancherribia will do good things for the team", said Bergara.

Gancherribia made a surprising deal with the French side Saint-Etienne which saw Athletic Club's fan-favourite keeper Gorka Iraizoz move to France and the French national team goalkeeper Stéphane Ruffier go the other way to Spain. The French-Basque 28 years old keeper has enjoyed a huge success at Saint-Etienne's goal for the few past seasons and Bilbao's fans hope the man to continue his success in between the posts.
"I'm really happy to be here in Bilbao. As a Basque it's an honour to play for this unique club and I'm really excited to help the team win trophies", Ruffier commented shortly his arrival.

In Athletic Club's third game of the season they continued their slow start to the new season by losing to the capital's giants. Alonso started the scoring with a long shot which wasn't powerful but Ruffier didn't manage to save it for unknown reasons. The French keeper stood in his goal taking few steps to the corner the ball was going to without making anything to stop it. Six minutes later Benzema got the ball but Gurpegi slid in and got the ball away. Benzema reached the ball and shot but it was intercepted by Aymeric Laporte who failed in clearing the ball out by passing it straight back to the French attacker. This time the striker dribbled past the defenders and slotted a shot past Ruffier to the bottom right corner. The keeper could have done better again.
Fifteen minutes later Benzema got his second with a curling shot from left to the right corner. Los Blancos looked like the winners and they were on a way to destroying the Basque side.
Right before the halftime whistle Iker Muniain got a cross in from the left. The ball was headed by Aduriz but Diego Lopez parried the ball right to Markel Susaeta who put the ball to the net with a diving header. Bilbao kept on pushing for two more goals but they received a cold shower when Gareth Bale finished a counter attack with his right foot. Los Leones managed to bring one back in the 79th minute when Aritz Aduriz headed the ball to the right bottom corner but that wasn't enough.

Good Afternoon. What do you think about your results so far?

They are pretty poor. Our finishing has been poor and we haven't created many chances. We barely managed to beat two promoted sides and we lost to a great team. We are trying to improve our game as fast as possible.


Do you believe in your team's ability to reach Champions League football?

I am absolutely sure about it. The season is long and there are still 35 matches left. We can win the title or get relegated in that time. In football everything can happen. But I know we will play next season in the Champions League.


Why did you decide to sign the players you signed?

Because we needed strenghtening in those positions. Gorka Iraizoz had his best seasons two years ago and he simply isn't on that level anymore. I thought about our options and decided that signing Ruffier for the great price we got him was the best option. He hasn't really shined yet but he will start it soon.

As for the Javi (Ros) and Markel (Bergara) we needed players for those positions. The squad didn't have enough depth and the youngsters aren't ready yet. We got both of those players for great prices and I'm happy they are here.


Will you be focusing on the youth academy?

Yes, of course. The club has invested a couple million euros for new scouts in Basque Country and it's just a matter of time before we find those new gems.

I wouldn't go for Llorente. Didn't really leave the club on good terms despite the great things he achieved with Bilbao. I had a Bilbao career early on as well except I avoided players from Real Sociedad. They are rivals! I stuck with youth academy players and players that Bilbao signed in real life. No need to take every good player Sociedad has and ruin the derby between them, but that's just me.

Awww what you're not letting Iraizoz retire at the club great start to the season though. Bilbao is solid in midfield. De Marcos was awesome there but with the return of Beñat he had to be moved around. Looking forward to seeing what players you're scouting for!

Because Iraizoz is terrible in the game. He feels worse than a League 2 keeper. He reacts so slowly to everything and he can't save anything. Also, Ruffier is better even though he made a few mistakes against RM.

Great start? Hell no! I barely beat two bad teams (sorry Tex, but Depor aren't good without you) and when I faced a big team my defence got humiliated. On the bright side I'm in a good position and I have just started the season so I can experiment without that much pressure.

I would play De Marcos but he isn't good enough for the midfield. I would use him as a right back but Iraola is a club legend and it would be wrong to take him out. I actually should try him on the wing, he should be good there. I can't believe I didn't think about that until writing this.

I haven't advanced enough yet to receive my scout report but he's a 4*/4* Spanish guy scouting in Spain. I'm expecting great findings from him. When I get more money I'll send another scout to France and that's basically all I can do. Scouting will be very important because of the cantera and I can't make the signings I want because of it. But until the youth players develope it will be tough, especially with getting strikers who are all old.

I have a question for you: Can I buy Antoine Griezmann? According to many sites he could play for Bilbao but I want to make sure before trying to buy him in the future... probably.

I won't sell Aketxe, he's got a good potential in him.

Agirretxe is actually my striker target. I will probably try to sell Aduriz in January when he's still worth something and I would replace him with Agirretxe.

At the moment I'm using Gurpegi because of my respect to club legends and captains and Laporte. They are doing pretty well and I'm thinking about loaning Etxeita out (he was the young and not-so-highly-rated one, right?). San Jose is my third choice now.

Chico, I will sign all of Sociedad's Basque players because only they have got good ones! Screw the rivalry! It's survival of the finest.

I said great start because of your league position and point differential between all of you. Everyone is still within your range. Jeez...

De Marcos is good everywhere dude. That's what we've been saying lol

Remember, your youth academy has no limits. Any player from a Basque youth academy is eligible for Bilbao, not just youth from Spain and France.

Ok so because I've packed for the holiday, I had time on my hands to advance the Freiburg.

I simmed the friendlies which made me realise that I wouldn't be able to sim games this season because we'd probably lose. I drew 2-2 at home to Sunderland, won 1-0 at Cagliari and then lost 2-0 at home to Milan.

I am incredibly happy with the signings I made but have some exists as well:

Players bought in: Kevin Volland for £16.5 million from Hoffenheim. Making the dangerous switch from my arch rivals, I made sure I overpaid slightly for his services.
Mato Vukusic for £2 million from Frankfurt. The 20 year old striker can also play out wide so will provide some depth to the forwards.
Asmir Begovic for £10.4 million from Napoli. The 30 year old was the man I wanted and I got him. I did pay a little more than I wanted though considering he was on his last year of his contract.
Sonny Kittel on a pre-contract from Frankfurt. Just brilliant. Signed him at 86 overall. He arrived at 89. I love him.
Robin Van Persie for £10 million from Manchester United. The signing just seemed right. I have some Dutch players in the squad. He fits that category. My target is to win the Champions League, something that RVP has never done in his career. He's 34 now so coming towards the end of a fantastic career. What a way to bow out it would be if he won the UCL.

Departures: Fallou Diagne was sold by the club to Leverkusen which really annoyed me because he was homesick.

Chris Gunter joined QPR for £1.25 million
Nemanja Markovic, George Ottl, Matias Fernandez, Phillipp Boland, Mike Elia and Tobias Ziereis all loaned out for the season to let their stats grow.

Just to say I haven't finished August yet (I'm on the 26th) but with 2 games still left to play I won't be able to finish the transfer window before I go on holiday. I have used Volland and Kittel and all I can say is that I'm not disappointed, but you'll have to wait and see how the 1st month of the new season went.

P.S please do not leave me too many pages to read when I get back. I fear after a 10 day holiday, I may be spending a while playing catch up before I can get an update in myself

Man those are some great signings. Volland is one of my targets for next season and I will have to look at Kittel. Begovic can be a beast on his day, 88 overall in my career. Unlucky about Diagne, he was a beast for me during a Hull career I did that I didn't post.

Depay, standing in for Schurrle, opened the scoring slotting into the corner despite the keeper closing down the majority of the space. Aubameyang made it 2 when he beat the defender, cut inside, cut back outside then back inside, beat the defender again and smashed in.

After many brilliant saves by Mannone, Sakho headed home from a corner. Johnson converted after a defensive mistake. Paloschi won it in stoppage time, smashing in from the outside of the box with the outside of his boot.

After a game where Begovic kept us in it as Man. Utd dominated us. Come extra time we made changes and one of those changes, Jay Rodriguez, broke clear and curled in to give us the lead. Ramires then curled in before Mertens volleyed home. Our first trophy of the season!

Man those are some great signings. Volland is one of my targets for next season and I will have to look at Kittel. Begovic can be a beast on his day, 88 overall in my career. Unlucky about Diagne, he was a beast for me during a Hull career I did that I didn't post.

Volland is simply incredible. He's 80 rated and 24 years old at the moment but he plays more like an 85. Kittel I think was just a glitch. You know how EA sometimes just boost a random player; I think that's what happened there. Begovic is 85 rated and kept 2 clean sheets in first 2 games so far so hopefully he will be good for me as I've never used him on career before. Diagne was annoying, but at least I make it into some sort of storyline whenever I play Leverkusen. He was a solid defender, but he didn't feature as much as I or he wanted to so it was inevitable really. Shame that he stayed in the Bundesliga because I'd actually accepted an offer for more money from Newcastle I believe. I think whatever happens this will be my last season with Freiburg, as my core players are ageing, and I'd like a fresh challenge elsewhere rather than having to rebuild the side
