I have a question though and I would like people to comment.

What team will you be starting with in FIFA 16 when you get it?

Personally I have no idea I'm thinking Watford, Leicester or a RTG but haven't really decided.

I have still been reading the posts and I hope everyone keeps up the brilliant work and continue possibly the longest thread on the website.

It'll probably either Real Betis(I loved the team) or Chesterfield

It's funny how days go by where nobody replies to anything, then someone asks a question about FIFA 16 and we all come out of the woodwork lol. I'm just making observations, don't shoot me! But yeah for me it will most likely be Chelsea first, just while I get used to the new gameplay mechanics and movement. Once I get going with skills and finish up at least three or four seasons with them, I'll get around to these other ideas I came up with.

        1. Bournemouth or Watford, depending on whose kits look better

        2. Win the Scottish title with Aberdeen/Hibernian/Inverness CT

        3. Resurrect a former titan like Benfica, Hamburg or Milan

        4. Stick to Basque-only rules at Athletic Bilbao

        5. One of the French clubs that recently opened a new/renovated stadium

        6. Real Oviedo, possibly with financial takeover after promotion

I have never had this sort of performance with 3-5-2, but I suppose a different set of tactics might help.

It's pretty much their go-to formation these days, but Italian clubs playing in Europe and the national team use 4-3-3 or 4-4-2 diamond because 3-5-2 tends to be useless against any team that has multiple players on each of the wings. When you double up on the flank against any formation with only one player per wing, you can easily bypass what's going to be a crowded central midfield. And if your wide central defenders don't have the strength and pace to deal with tricky wingers, you can be in all sorts of trouble.

EDIT: Okay, so I think the problem MAY have been tactics rather than the formation itself. Testing is underway on 3-5-2, 5-2-3 and 3-4-3 using the game's default counter-attacking tactics. Results might be up and down until December or thereabout.

Lol I never use that 3-5-2 (2 CDMs, 1 CAM). Whenever I use that attacking set up I go with a back line of 5 instead of 3. I agree with you on the wingbacks never pushing up as high as you'd want them to in game. I think the only thing you can do to encourage them to push up higher is to avoid crowding the wings. For example, if your CAM has the ball do not dribble too far to the wings. If you take the ball over there, your wingback won't see space to run to and will instead stay back. Also using the button that sends your players on runs (L1 on PS4) will help out. What I tried once was adjusting the RM and LM on the 3-5-2 all the way back until you get the option to convert them to RWB and LWB, but then adjust them one click forward making them RM and LM again. That way they play closer to the back line, but you can give them instructions to push forward like get in behind which will guarantee he will push up. To be honest though I can't remember how that worked out for me but maybe you can give it a try.

I disagree about the 3-5-2 being useless against teams with traditional formations. Mexico used the 3-5-2 (sometimes 5-3-2) formation with Herrera as manager and our wings were never receiving too much damage. In fact our wings was one of our strongest points of the game. And Herrera was really stubborn about the formation he never changed to a back line of 4. It's all about the midfield. As long as your midfield can support the wingbacks, you won't have any problems with overlapping fullbacks, and if the opposition tries to overload the wings they leave themselves vulnerable to counter attacks.

Which brings me to the next subject, I think using the counter attack tactic will work great with your formation! With my B-Team's 3-5-2 at Leeds I usually play an offside trap so that my back line will press higher. Maybe you can give that a try as well.

I don't think I have to say who my first career will be; I'm sure you guys already know . I plan on staying there for a long time thanks to the new features. The only thing that could potentially throw me off after a couple seasons would be the "Copa LatAm". I've vented about it before so I don't want to get into it, but that tournament desperately needs some attention from EA.

For my second career I'm thinking of going to League 1 to a club that I've been planning to use since FIFA 14 but I've just never had a chance to since back then I was at Wimbledon and on 15 I went through this weird phase where I just couldn't return to England.

Looking forward to your Portsmouth career on 16 Tex! Having the real stadium in the game will undoubtedly heighten your experience by a ton.

Lol I agree. A few days ago I was reading about businesses that failed and/or went bankrupt and this sort of reminds me of the Osborne Effect although not as extreme of course. For those of you that aren't familiar with it, Osborne was a computer maker way back in the day (I think it was the late 1970s). Their 1st computer was extremely popular and in extremely high demand. They had so many back orders that they couldn't keep up with manufacturing. They were doing amazing for a new company but their mistake was announcing their 2nd computer too early. They let the people know of all the new features that were gonna be on the 2nd computer, and even though they weren't even close to the release date yet a lot of people cancelled their orders of the 1st version and waited for the 2nd to be released instead. This led to large amounts of unsold back stock for the company and eventually led to their bankruptcy. And now I know why businesses take so long to announce their new product

Nice career mode ideas by the way!

Thanks for the insight! You make several valid points because plenty of club and national sides from South America and Mesoamerica tend to play with a high tempo and crowded midfield, and it works because they have the right players. Maybe my central defenders are too slow, but let's see what I can do with them. You said you use a back line of five. How do you set up your midfield and attack? I was considering three centre halves, then a midfield of two deep wingers flanking three proper central midfielders, which I think has been my primary weakness i.e. a lack of central presence. Last season with 4-2-3-1, between 3-5 were always available in the middle of the park for a pass. This season's midfield has felt like a two-way road between Melo and Cataldi, or back to the defenders. Pretty sure offside trap will murder my three slow CBs, but I will try out anything at this point. Track back with stay wide and get in behind might be just what I need for the wing players, but maybe just having three in the middle will sort it out, and then I can have one of my forwards drop into that CF/CAM hybrid position. Might need to recall Zuculini and trade off Yesil to the bench for that, but it's worth a shot after an underwhelming first month. By the way, this is the shape I'm talking about.

I always end up resorting back to the club I support, Newcastle, so I will probably just start there. It's not like there isn't a good story there anyway with their lack of recent hardware and what not.

I'm actually really interested in this next one. It seems they have finally made some positive changes to career mode, rather than the crap in the last few years such as "updated UI", and "Global Trade Network". It is coming up so much quicker than I realized too! Still so much left to accomplish with Portsmouth!

That 5-3-2 you just posted is exactly how I play. The key to this formation is your midfield and a lot of it revolves around the CM. Personally I like to adjust the CM back all the way until you get the option to convert him to CDM, and then one click forward to make him CM again. I set the instructions to stay back and stay on the edge of box so that he will play as a CDM. I've found that if I were to convert him to CDM in the game he will often fall back too much and merge with the center halves which allows the opposition to pass the ball freely right outside of our box so that's why I adjust him as far back as possible but leave him as a CM. The RCM I leave without instructions with the intention of him being my box-to-box, and my LCM is given the get forward instruction (usually a CAM playing there). The wingbacks are of course instructed to always overlap.

When I managed Mexico, I had two different type of strikers up front. One instructed to stay central, as this was the one I wanted to be inside the box at all times, and the other instructed to drift wide. The striker instructed to drift wide was intended to be your creative striker that could easily dribble past defenders, so I wouldn't mind using a RW/LW sometimes. If you're familiar with the Mexican squad, the striker instructed to drift wide was usually Giovanni Dos Santos/Carlos Vela and the striker instructed to stay central was Javier Hernandez. I usually had the striker that would drift wide play LS so that whenever he would drift wide the LCM would push up and fill in that gap. I used a 3-5-2 in the beginning with much success but when time passed it stopped working as I wanted it to for some reason, so I eventually changed to 5-3-2 and that's where I left it. Nothing would change though the only difference was that I was using wingbacks now. The same starting eleven and instructions though.

With the Leeds B-Team, I do not have the same type of players so I've had to adjust the formation a bit. Because I don't have the right players to effectively play as wing backs I use a 3-5-2, with the wide midfielders instructed to drop back, stay wide, and get in behind as you said. The exception is my RM who is naturally a CAM and therefore I only instruct him to track back and stay wide. The midfield is exactly the same, except that in the 3-5-2 I play with a CDM. I don't adjust him or anything I just let him play as CDM since for some reason in the 3-5-2 I don't see the problem I mentioned in the 5-3-2 central midfielder. The CDM is instructed to stay back and cut passing lanes, the RCM is instructed to stay on edge of box because I want him to be my box to box but I don't want him to crowd the box and force a striker out, and the LCM is instructed to get forward (usually a CAM). If the LCM already has a high attacking work rate you don't need to instruct him to get forward in my experience. So, it's all pretty much the same as the 5-3-2 I used with Mexico, but the striker partnership is where things change. At Leeds I don't have a striker that can take the ball, dribble, and drift wide to open the opposition. So, what I did was adjust the RS back and converted him to RF or CF. I don't remember how many clicks I adjusted him because I used the midfield mark on the team management screen to measure it. You see the half moon? Bring the RS back to where he's just touching the right bottom corner of that line from the outside. I'll take a picture when I get home so I can better explain it. The LS is left as is with the instruction to stay central and target man, since that's the type of striker he is, and the RF is instructed to drift wide but depending on how he's playing I sometimes get rid of that instruction and change it to get in behind only. The RF is intended to play the CAM/CF role you mentioned.

When playing with a back line of 3 or 5 I always shoot for possession. Counter attacks are great when possible, but if you can't counterattack then you need all your players to be in their correct positions in order for it to work. That's why I don't use any free roams instructions. Everyone needs to be where they're supposed to be both in attack and defense. As I'm sure you've noticed already, having just one player get out of position in defense can easily cost you a goal, and having a player in attack out of position will make it difficult to make any real damage. So whenever you have the ball and you see that your players aren't in position yet, pass it back to your center halves and wait for everyone to get organized. When you watch a team play 5 or 3 at the back IRL you'll notice that the center halves are very much involved with the ball circulation so do that in game as well. Hope I helped!

Does Mbaye tend to get forward more than Ikoko does? Or do both seem to have trouble getting forward?

Sky News: Matt Oakley returns as Exeter City Assistant Manager

The former Exeter number eight had been spotted at the club’s training ground a month after the new season started. The forty-two year old played for Exeter City until retiring four seasons back. He’s been at a number of different clubs including Southampton, Derby and Leicester City whilst acquiring experience and knowledge of coaching.

The midfielder is back at Exeter with renewed passion for success which shone through in his interview with our very own Vinny O’Connor:

Vinny: Had you ever considered joining Exeter City as a coach in your playing days?

Matt: A little. I was prepared to step in as an emergency coach or manager but never as a full time coach until I decided to retire. I took coaching programmes and I found them fulfilling. I passed and moved back to Derby to learn under Steve McLaren and I have now grown confident enough to make a big leap to the Premier League with Exeter.

Are you already learning under your new boss?

Matt: A coach will always learn something new under a different manager and Bee has already taught me a lot. He welcomed me with open arms and the lads have accepted me and are eager to work with me. It’s great to see all the familiar faces and I had to go and have dinner with Liam (Sercombe) and his wife to catch up. The boss took us to a bar and we chatted all night. I learned so much and I’m looking forward to the challenge of the Premier League with all the staff and players by my side.

Does Calum have any odd habits when at the training ground?

Matt: Hahaha, he usually joins in with the lads when they are doing their sprinting exercises. For what he lacks in speed, he makes up for in coaching! Hahaha!

What are your aspirations with the club?

Matt: All I want to do is learn and use my experience to help develop the lads throughout their careers.

Would you become manager of Exeter City if Bee left?

Matt: I cannot see the boss going anytime soon but for whatever reason it might be, it’s a possibility that I would become manager but anything could happen between then.

Thank you for your time, Mr. Oakley.

No problem. It's been a pleasure.

Oakley’s new boss spoke to Sky Sports HQ earlier in the month. Bee admitted that he has high aspirations for the club after starting the first two months of the Premier League in the top two.

“I could never have hoped for such a response from the players. They really have hit the ground running and I can’t wait to see what we achieve this year,” he told Sky Sports HQ.

When asked about Swansea’s stubbornness to sell Jonjo Shelvey, he said: “I can understand. He’s a top player and I could see that they weren’t going to budge so I ended the negotiations.”

“We bought some world-class players this transfer window and the opening games have proven to all the pundits that they can work as a team and gel straight away.”

Bee was also clear about his main ambitions as manager: “I’m not going to stop until I at least win the Premier League with Exeter. I will not be leaving for any job. No amount of money could lure me even to Real Madrid!”

Bee claimed that his team would have to fight similarly to last year for a Europa League spot and he has high hopes for Champions League in the future.

“We will be a team to be reckoned with and we will move into those Champions League spots. I’d be flabbergasted if we didn’t!”

P.S. I now really want to post my new formation and tactics too! I'll post about them soon.

It is coming up so much quicker than I realized too! Still so much left to accomplish with Portsmouth!
I've a lot to do with Shrewsbury too! I'd say I'm gonna wait until Christmas to buy it though and of course a PS4/Xbox1. (BTW, which do you guys think is the better console?) So I've still got a few months!

Seeing all of the formation talk, I'll post mine tomorrow along with the end of the season with Shrewsbury. (Yes it is from January right to May, I got a little bit carried away.....haha.)

Yep, I was considering the same setup here. I would like to Bernardeschi drift wide from RS so that he can always cut back in on his left, and Cataldi could play RCM to fill the gap as you said. He's capable of scoring goals, so I have no issues with him being close to the box a few times a game. Vela is a player I have tremendous admiration for, Dos Santos as well. Both have really flourished in Spain. Vela is complete unrecognizable from the horribly one-dimensional forward he was for Arsenal, and Dos Santos has become so good that it surprised me to see him join the MLS now instead of sticking it out with Villarreal and maybe pushing for a Europa League win. He really has come on leaps and bounds. I understand pretty much what you're trying to do there, combine that second striker type of player with the goal poacher in Chicharito.

Thanks for the tips. I have been playing 3-5-2 for a few months now in FUT until I started this Bologna save, but maybe it was because the quality of my team was so good that I didn't have any problems. Not sure if the in-game counter-attack tactics use free form or organized positioning, but I have never been one to opt for any sort of freedom in defence at any rate. The build-up phase is where I want to keep things tightest, but I will try possession in case counter-attacking is too unstable, thanks.

The answer to this is actually quite interesting once you consider the factors surrounding them. Ikoko is a natural RB with M/M work rates, and Mbaye is a natural LM with H/H work rates. I notice that while defending, even though Mbaye has the higher work rate, Ikoko tends to be 4-5 yards deeper, usually beside the central defenders. Mbaye will take more time to get back despite the high defensive work rate and track back instruction, often leaving my left flank as the weak zone. I think this has to do with their natural positions, as I had a similar issue last season when Mbaye was positioned at left back. The centre half furthest left of whichever formation I play tends to have a poorer rating because he has to effectively be two men at once 5-6 times every game. In attack, you would then assume Mbaye gets up quickly, but no! He tends to wait until I have to circulate the ball back to the left to make his runs up. Ikoko is the one I usually find storming up the pitch to put in a cross, and he's a pretty good dribbler as well so I have no issue handing him the ball in tight situations.

We have the quality to improve and positives to take from today's game. We're threatening down the wings, which is not an area of strength for most Italian sides. We also dominated physically if you compare the number of tackles and interceptions we made to Palermo.'

                              • MOTM Bernardeschi — 1 goal, 4/4 shots on target, 21/24 passes completed, 1 interception

'The first half was completely in our hands. We defended very well and kept the ball far away from our box. The response to recovering possession was a good one. Both our goals came from quick counter-attacks. The decisions were made very quickly and very smartly today, so I am proud of my team. Torino began the second half like madmen. We could not stop them from scoring that goal if we played it over 100 times. The answer from us was to defend like a championship team for the rest of the game, so I'm happy.'

                              Monthly Review

Mancosu — The decision to keep our star striker seems like it will prove to be the right one. Mancosu already has 4 goals and 1 assist in his first six games, including a hat-trick against La Spezia. A few tweaks to our style of play should help him get into scoring positions and really start knocking the goals back. On top of all this, he's even grown +1 to 73 overall, with boosts to his passing and dribbling stats to supplement what is now 84 in finishing!

Bernardeschi — Our best player of the opening stages, he seems to be on the way to fulfilling the potential I know is there. He's not been rated below 7.2 in any of our matches, with nearly perfect pass accuracy and plenty of attempted dribbles to supplement his creative vision. The goal he scored against Torino was a thing of pure class with zero chance of being saved, and he also has 3 assists to his name.

New players — Daniele Rugani and Felipe Melo have slotted straight into the first team with tremendous success. Rugani did exactly what I thought he would, which is to add stability and assurance to our defence. Felipe is the steel we needed so desperately in midfield, but he's also a threat going up the pitch with a fearsome right foot and long-range shooting. Zampano is turning out to be exactly the type of impact substitute I needed, offering a turn of pace and strength in the dying minutes when everyone is fatigued.

Results vs. performances — Eight points out of 15 in the first month is not bad, especially when we're tinkering with a new system. But I happen to be very demanding, so we need to either start the season well or have a good run in the middle. Milan and Parma look strong after their additions in the summer, Inter and Roma will take some effort to beat, and Juventus is the world-class powerhouse that we all fear and loathe. Tough times lie ahead!

Formation — After plenty of discussion with my colleague ChicoBass, we're going to implement a 5-3-2 system in the next few games and see if that doesn't enhance our defensive stability and offensive nous. Greater control in midfield might be exactly what is required to reduce the pressure on our defenders. That said, Oikonomou's place is genuinely under threat. I'll give him time to improve, but I need to see a considerable improvement before the month is out if he doesn't want to lose his spot to Maxence Chapuis.

                              1. Juventus — 13 points
                              2. Inter — 10 points
                              3. Roma — 10 points

                              4. Milan — 9 points
                              5. Parma — 9 points

                              6. Bologna — 8 points

You improved a lot after that disappointing loss against Parma. Draws against Fiorentina and Milan are good results and you're just a point behind the Europa League spots. Mancosu is still very important for you and I like that you're keeping him. You also made great moves in the transfer window with the signings of Rugani and Melo. I'm enjoying this career a lot! Also, the behind the scenes post was great.

What a deadline day! When I saw that Valencia weren't going higher than 45M I thought that they would back out of the deal but I'm actually glad that they accepted it. Now you have one amazing striker and one good striker who should combine well with Tevez. I'm sure they'll destroy many defences.

That was a perfect month except for the Liverpool draw but damn, you still managed to get past them. Now that I think of it you always do a great job in the cups. It's also good to see that your strikers are getting lots of goals.
