February to May 2014 Update + Season Recap
February
Sunderland 1-1 Stoke City
Giaccherini 73’
Whelan 23’
It was a phenomenal effort from us to come away with a point, but we simply have to do better in the next game against Newcastle.
Newcastle United 0-1 Sunderland
Morata 45’
We worked our tails off for this win, and I couldn't be prouder of the boys. Always magical to do the double over your rivals, especially like this.
Sunderland 1-0 Crystal Palace (FA Cup)
Giaccherini 24’
I don't think Palace deserved to lose, to be honest. They played their hearts out and were incredible opponents. I hope they avoid relegation.
March
Sunderland 1-1 West Bromwich Albion
Ki 27’
Bifouma 45’
As a manager, you want to see your boys put in effort. You have to accept that sometimes, results do not go your way. We were the better team by far but only managed a point, which is not ideal for us at this point.
Liverpool 1-1 Sunderland
Aspas 47’
Ki 58’
It's great that we have done so well to get points against the biggest teams in this league. We spurned a lot of great chances to come away with all three points, and we can only blame ourselves for that.
Norwich City 1-1 Sunderland
Hooper 45’
Morata 6’
Another draw that I really feel should have been swung into a win for us.
Newcastle United 0-1 Sunderland (FA Cup)
Ki 69’
Three games against Newcastle, three wins. Could you ask for anything better than that? The supporters are thrilled, the lads are brimming with confidence, and I'm a proud man. Unfortunately, we lose Ki for the rest of the season to an LCL injury.
Arsenal 3-1 Sunderland
Mandzukic 4’, Podolski 30’ (pen) 66’ (pen)
Johnson 17’
You can't expect to go to the Emirates and come away winners when Arsenal are in such good form. Credit to their forwards who worked hard to earn those penalties. Without them, we could have got a point.
Sunderland 4-0 Crystal Palace
Vergini 22’, Johnson 37’ 46’ (pen), Giaccherini 77’
It was a completely different Palace side from the one who gave us a fight in the FA Cup. We were able to impose ourselves despite Mutch being sent off early in the game. I can see a very bright future for our team.
April
Tottenham 2-1 Sunderland
Lennon 42’, Eriksen 51’
Giaccherini 15’
We've got to stop giving away such sloppy goals. I think this summer will require a bit of work in our defensive tactics and set-up, but I'm pleased that we were able to prevent Spurs from recording a clean sheet.
Sunderland 2-1 West Ham United
Cattermole 37’, Fletcher 65’
Nolan 75’
Not much to fault in this performance, but very little to praise as well. West Ham were as poor as we were good. In this case, that's not a good thing.
Sunderland 1-1 Everton
Fletcher 85’
Lukaku 54’
I was really expecting better from Everton, so to come out of this with a point is a decent result for us. We're mathematically safe from relegation, so the club's goal for the season has been achieved. From here on in, after the FA Cup semi-final against Manchester United, we will be trying out some new things for next season's competition.
Sunderland 1-2 Manchester United (FA Cup)
Gardner 57’
Van Persie 30’ (pen), Mata 82’
It's a shame we had to go out of the cup so close to the final, but at least we went down to a team that earned the win. I think Rafael's dismissal was never a red, but the referee saw fit to give it. We ought to have capitalised on that advantage, but Mata is a smooth operator. Class goal from him.
Sunderland 1-1 Cardiff City
Roberge 53’
Medel 84’
It's never nice being responsible for a club being relegated, but we couldn't just roll over and give them the three points, could we? Credit to Ole Gunnar and his boys, they will be back after a year in the Championship.
May
Manchester United 5-0 Sunderland
Rooney 11’ (pen) 22’ 49’, Kagawa 69’ 70’
This was by far the worst performance we have put on this season. Of course, we lost Giaccherini to a torn hamstring (six weeks) and Roberge to a dislocated shoulder (two weeks) while trying out a new formation, but there is absolutely no excuse for conceding five goals.
Chelsea 3-0 Sunderland
Schurrle 25, Azpilicueta 44’, Benzema 84’
Chelsea have put on an amazing show to surge from sixth to joint-top of the league. We may have just lost to the eventual champions, so I can't complain about this one, except more fight from us would have been good.
Sunderland 1-2 Swansea City
Mutch 20’
I can't really say I'm surprised, as the lads were bloody tired. Great for Mutch to end the season with a goal, but the rest of the squad was aching and fatigued. That we only lost by one goal is something we benefit from.

Sunderland midfielder Jack Colback has committed his future to the Wearside club by signing a two-year extension worth £30,000 per week. Colback's previous contract, originally set to expire in June 2014, was the subject of media speculation throughout the 2013-14 season. The central midfielder put rest to rumours soon after Sunderland's 2-1 loss to Swansea City, announcing that he would be remaining at his boyhood club.
Key events
• Wayne Rooney aside, no world-class striker in England's top flight scored more than 15 goals for his club. Benzema (Chelsea), van Persie (Manchester United), Aguero (Manchester City), and Mandzukic (Arsenal) all scored 12 or fewer.
• Crystal Palace accumulated just 14 points from 38 games, including only two wins. This is the lowest points total I've seen from a team in this year's edition.
• No English team made it past the quarter-finals of either continental tournament. The Champions Cup semi-finals featured three Spanish teams plus Juventus.
• Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Roma, Marseille, and Benfica all won their respective domestic leagues. Benfica was the only one to also make a European final.
• Quite an incredible first season. I achieved the board's goal (avoid relegation) and my own (two players with 10+ league goals), and I've made the team my own with good signings.
• With the prize money I've earned as well as what I have remaining from the summer budget and sales, I expect to have upwards of £20 million to spend in the summer. We will be gunning for quality over quantity.
• Alvaro Morata will head back to Real Madrid, and it will be vital for us to bring in a striker of top quality. My primary target is Danny Welbeck, who will be wanting out of United having made just seven appearances.
