Re: How's Your FIFA Career Mode Going?

Tex You've got off to a really good start to life in the Premier League. Early doors still, granted, but not at all a bad way to begin. Clean sheets against the likes of Tottenham and Everton... very respectable! Goals coming from all across the pitch. And is that Tammy Abraham on your team who scored a pair of penalties against Spurs? Well done, lad. Not a bad start with Metz, either. I think you have definitely got past your slump since coming back. Nice.

That's typical West Ham, Payet laying on the chances and Noble to the rescue. Dybala is pretty intense. I still don't know why you signed Lacazette when you have him, Payet and Tello. But then I can't deal with the two strikers when 4-3-3 works so well for me. All power to you I suppose. By the way, you've just signed Sofiane Feghouli in real life. Thoughts?

You need to start bossing those transfer windows a little more. If you still need a good keeper, look at Daniel Bentley from Southend United and Jake Kean at Norwich City. Both very tidy backups. I'm also loving that signing of Cedric Diomande Gondo solely for the name. I hope he's got at least 85 strength to match up to such a powerful moniker. Karaer over at Kayserispor looks like a real stud in your academy. Hold on to that guy for as long as possible. Your Europa League group looks like it could throw up some very nice games and results, especially if Spurs end up losing to Thistle or Braga.

Cabee I'm glad the developments at Forest have you interested, because they have yielded some... surprising results. How goes the Newcastle career? Haven't seen an update in a bit.

    Simppu
Yet another of us on the 4-1-2-1-2 machine. I see Rabbit has made a convert out of you. Very nice team you've got for the division you're in. Quite surprised that you sold Werner, but like you said, it was the only choice in the interest of realism. I like that you didn't go out and blow all the cash on new players. Hopefully you will be able to do that next season.

In other news, the Bundesliga has signed a collective bargaining deal for their TV rights worth €3.5 billion, which I think has already had a considerable impact on German clubs' spending. Look at the business Dortmund have already done. We could be looking at much stronger transfer budgets in FIFA 17. And the Euros... my word. I don't even know where to begin. Harry Kane taking corners, Conte turning the worst Italy side in decades into a well-drilled machine, Hazard and Courtois still being out of it, Payet's goal, Modric's goal. What a fantastic tournament so far... and we haven't even finished the first round of games!

Thanks! The Premier League has been pretty exciting for me so far, and yep, that certainly is Tammy Abraham there. I brought him in with a few other players in January last season and changed my formation and that was what led to my turnaround after all those scoreless draws and silly losses. So he pretty much saved me last season.

Metz is actually a lot of fun so far. I always wanted to do French career since we don't have many careers on here from the French leagues. There's been a few but none have really lasted long term. Since I'm a fan of lower leagues it was just a matter of finding a team that looked like it would be good to work with!

Euros? Get outta here! (New York accent)

Because of work, the difference in time between this side of the lake and Europe, I've been unable to catch any Euro match I did watch the Germany - Ukraine but that was it. Really wanted to watch Italy but had to work. How about that Copa America though! No Suarez? The worst Brazil in recent times with no Neymar to rescue them? Also, hell of a game last night Rabbit. Really enjoyed that Mexico - Venezuela match!

How's Your FIFA Career Mode Going?

          Luton Town FC
          August 2016 - Season 1

Season Objective - Win The League Title
Domestic Cup - Reach Round of 32
          Transfer Budget - $1,000,000
          Wage Budget - $8,000

          Wycombe 0 - 1 Luton Town
          LUT: Pigott 90'

First match of the season was away from home for The Hatters and what better way to start the season than by motivating the fans with 3 points. The game itself wasn't very exciting though, with Chavez fielding a 4-4-2 Diamond Narrow formation that gave us a very boring first half. After having no shots on goal in the first half, Chavez changed formations to a 4-1-4-1 (which Chavez has mentioned as being his formation of choice) using Luton's star striker Mackail-Smith alone up front. Although the team was playing much better, Mackail-Smith was unable to create much danger up front which led to Chavez bringing young Joe Pigott (62 OVR) onto the field to play as the lone striker. Pigott also had a though time, hardly touching the ball as the defenders beat him to the ball every time with speed. The cheers finally came in the 90th minute with a goal from Pigott himself though with a great header inside the box! The goal was mostly due to the goalkeeper's dreadful mistake rather than Pigott's own merits. As you can see in the photo, the goalkeeper had come out to take the ball out of the air but ended up freezing right in front of Pigott who did not forgive and netted the ball.

Capital One Cup - Round 1
          Luton Town 0 - 0 Leeds United
PENALTIES: Luton Town 7 - 6 Leeds United

Luton Town made their debut in the Capital One Cup tonight as definite underdogs against the sleeping giant Leeds United. This time Chavez fielded a 4-1-4-1 from the get go, and with this formation. They were able to hold Leeds United to a scoreless draw for the full 90 minutes. Luton Town's back line and holding midfielder Doyle did a fantastic job at neutralizing all of Leeds' attacks and keeping them out of the box, to the point where Leeds resorted to taking long shots at Luton's shaky goalkeeper Justham. Of course every long shot taken by Leeds' Antenucci made the Luton supporters hold their breath, but fortunately the Italian striker seemed to be off his game even though his shots were cannons they were always just inches off target. Of course many Luton fans let out a sigh of relief when they saw Antenucci leave the field late in the second half to be replaced by Wood. Luton managed to hold Leeds off through extra time as well since without Antenucci on the field Leeds' attacks was far weaker. Even in the penalty shootout Luton were underdogs since the Championship side have more individual skill in their ranks, but Luton's fans dared to dream as the 26 year old goalkeeper Justham actually saved Leeds' first penalty! The cheers were quickly silenced as Luton's Green would miss his shot right after Justham's save, but Leed's Taylor skyrocketed his shot in the sudden death phase to give Luton their ticket to the next round.

          Luton Town 0 - 1 Exeter City
          EXE: Hoskins 66'
The Hatters returned to league play with their confidence sky high after eliminating a superior side such as Leeds United, but Exeter City knocked them back down to Earth with a defeat in their own ground. Luton were persistent in the attack, but were inaccurate - recording a total of 15 shots with only 6 being on target. Exeter City's new manager Cabee has been doing an amazing job with Exeter so far this season, with many believing that we are currently witnessing history in the making with Exeter. Will this team be among Europe's elite in the future? That's certainly what the Exeter reporters are predicting.

          Cambridge United 2 - 2 Luton Town
          CAM: Dunne 4' Newtown 15'
          LUT: Mackail-Smith 7' O'Donnell 69'
Luton Town came out wanting to bounce back after the defeat against Exeter but Cambridge's Dunne shut them down early on in the match. Mackail-Smith was able to pick Luton up again with a goal just 3 minutes later, which was also his first goal of the season, but Cambridge shut them down again 8 minutes later. The match was very balanced until O'Donnell was able to get a very lucky rebound inside the keeper's box during a corner that bounced off his shin and went into the net. Not the best of goals, but a goal is a goal and the entire team celebrated the equalizer.

Capital One Cup - Round 2
          Luton Town (B-Team) 6 - 2 Northampton (AET)
          LUT: Pigott 11' 104' 118' Smith 28' Mackail-Smith 96' 109'
          NHT: Moloney 15' O'Toole 47'
Luton Town came out with a completely different starting eleven to what we have grown accustomed to from Chavez and the change in personnel also came with a change in formation. With his new lineup, Chavez fielded a 4-4-2 Holding, using Marriot as a free striker often drifting wide while Pigott stayed in a more central position. Not long into the match Green crossed the ball into the box where Pigott hit an amazing volley and scored against a defenseless goalkeeper. Luton fans couldn't believe Pigott had scored such an amazing goal, but while they were jumping up in excitement Moloney equalized for Northampton. Luton's Smith would then score another great goal from outside the box, but the replay showed that the shot had deflected off a defender which took some merit away from goal but it was a great goal nonetheless. Two minutes into the second half Northampton equalized the match. If you had to bet who would score the 3rd goal first you'd say it would definitely be Northampton at the moment, and you could see in Chavez's face that perhaps fielding an alternative lineup was not the right decision for this match. Chavez sent Mackail-Smith onto the field to try and resolve the match but fans weren't too confident since the Scotsman hasn't been looking good in recent showings. The game went to extra time with Luton playing a bit better now, but still not creating much danger up front with Mackail-Smith and Pigott. Then the unexpected happened - goals galore. Mackail-Smith proved his manager right and scored 6 minutes into the first half of extra time, and then Pigott scored 8 minutes after that. Northampton had been caught pushing too far forward looking for the winner and Luton were capitalizing on it. 5 minutes into the second half of extra time Mackail-Smith scored again, and Pigott completed his hat-trick 9 minutes after that. What in the world had happened to Northampton?! From battling Luton toe-to-toe for 90 minutes to shielding their face hoping the ref ends it soon. Luton rightfully earned their ticket to the next round and with Mackail-Smith's recent poor run of form fans are starting to wonder if perhaps the trick is to play him paired with Pigott up front in order to fully unleash his talent.

          Stevenage 2 - 1 Luton Town
          LUT: Mackail-Smith 4'
STE: Cuthbert OG 23' Wheldale 41'
And once again, Luton come from a motivating cup win to be received by a shocking defeat in the league. Mackail-Smith scored a goal early on to reflect how confident Luton had come out today, but the team's morale evidently collapsed after the captain Cuthbert put the ball into his own net. Wheldale would then give Stevenage the lead in the 41st minute and Luton were simply never able to recover. A few of the players left it all on the field, while others showed little to no motivation of equalizing the score line.

Luton Town Player of The Month

          CM - Nathan Doyle - England(64 OVR 28yrs)
Luton Town did not have a good month, struggling in front of goal, but the team's midfield and defense has stood out. A key part in Chavez's 4-1-4-1 is of course the CDM Doyle who is expected to stay back close to the center backs while the full backs and the rest of midfield go up in attack. It has become evident that when Doyle is having a good game, the rest of the team is having a good game. When Doyle is having a bad day or is trying to join the attack too much, the team falls apart. His position is key, and Chavez has given him his full confidence.

          Chavez Under Pressure
Luton Town had made a quick fire decision to sign the inexperienced Chavez to take control of the club, and we are now witnessing the consequences. Luton have only won one match, thanks to a goalkeeper mistake, and have lost two of their four matches. Luton have found success in cup competitions, but that may soon come to an end as well as they are scheduled to face off against FL Championship side Reading who are currently in 10th place in the league. Top of the table or bottom, they are still a championship side and are the clear favorites to go through on this fixture.

          The Bright Side
Despite Luton's difficulties in the league, three players have been called up to their national team. The captain Scott Cuthbert has been called to Scotland, while Josh McQuoid and Paddy McCourt have been called to Northern Ireland. This wouldn't be the first time a player from Luton Town has been called to a national team despite not playing in a top division. Although fans are happy to see their players called up, they may have a hint of worry as well since these players will be forced to miss the next league match since they will have to report with their national team.

          Conclusion
Because we did not have a preseason I'm just barely getting to know my squad and so far, it looks like I have a lot of research to do for the next transfer window. The team lacks a natural winger that can give penetrate the defense, and also I'm not fond of our current strikers. Mackail-Smith is easily our most talented, and his individual talent is evident on the field each and every game, but he's not the type of striker I am looking for. The system I'm implicating is virtually the same I used with Wimbledon, but I still need a Terry Gornell or Danny Kedwell up front in order to perfect it. Joe Pigott has really impressed me and he's a good target man, but he lacks enough individual skill to be left up top alone. Josh McQuoid is supposed to be my second choice striker behind Mackail-Smith, but I don't have a speedy RM so that's where I'm using him.

One thing that did surprise me is the talent that League 2 has in this year's game. Back in my Wimbledon days seeing a 65+ rated player in League 2 was rare yet I have about 5 players rated above 65. My defense is probably the strongest part of my squad with players like Cuthbert (69 OVR) and O'Brien (67 OVR) as center backs. And on the other hand, the weakest area of my squad is actually my goalkeepers. I have Justham as first choice (50 OVR) and 18 year old King (48 OVR) as my second choice. Pretty much if any player manages to get through my defense and shoot, it's more than likely going to be a goal - and it has. I'm rotating my goalkeepers every week in player training to try and improve their game. In the meantime all of my attacking player training as been very easy. As long as I can get a shot on target it's a goal lol so, for the next transfer window my priority will be GK, ST, and RM/LM.

And I think that pretty much concludes it for now. Glad to finally put out a career update again after being gone for so long.
          Thanks For Reading!

First post in, thoughts? Suggestions? Too long/too messy? Let me know! Trying to get used to doing this again and remembering how the formatting worked. I want to post the squad and formation I am using next before my next update which is almost done as well.

Tex: You sold Long?! Sorry if I didn't catch it in your previous updates but why did you sell him? I actually had him on my shortlist until I noticed that you were using him. I still don't want to get a player that has already been used on the forum in order to keep things fresh but I'm just curious on what led you to sell him.

              2015 European Shield

This year's European Shield takes place in several cities across Belgium and includes eight teams from around the continent, including former European champions Nottingham Forest, who are under the charge of a new manager, Indi Blue, and barred from registering new players until the summer transfer window of 2016. Perhaps the most significant news for Forest ahead of the trip to Belgium was the cancellation of a loan move for Liverpool forward Danny Ings, whose pace and precision would have added a new dimension to the Forest attack. In his stead, Lars Veldwijk has been recalled from his loan at Dutch side PEC Zwolle. He is expected to start front and centre in a traditional 4-3-3 formation, with Michail Antonio and Britt Assombalonga.

              Group A
              KV Oostende (Belgium)
              Córdoba CF (Spain)
              Cagliari Calcio (Italy)
              Nottingham Forest (England)

              Group B
              KAA Gent (Belgium)
              Sporting Lokeren (Belgium)
              Medipol Başakşehir (Turkey)
              FC Pro Vercelli (Italy)

Double by the Dutch as Forest thrash Cagliari

Dutch striker Lars Veldwijk scored twice in the first half to help Nottingham Forest record a 4-0 win in the opening fixture in Group A of the European Shield. Chris Burke added a third to Forest's tally just shy of the hour mark, and Jamie Paterson came on to score a fourth late into stoppage time.

Cagliari's 4-3-1-2 formation came up short against the considerably more expansive 4-3-3 favoured by Indi Blue, with both full backs isolated on the wing and tortured, in particular, by Michail Antonio's incisive dribbling and searing pace. The Englishman was a constant menace, tearing down the left wing time and again with the ferocity and speed of a wild cheetah.

Blue was more than happy for Forest to sit back and contain Cagliari's most dangerous attacking player, Marco Sau, who failed to register a single shot on target thanks to Michael Mancienne's composed performance in defence.

Defensive masterclass ensures second Forest win

Lars Veldwijk headed in from Nottingham Forest's lone effort on goal as the visiting English side beat Córdoba 1-0 in the second Group A match of this year's European Shield. Forest goalkeeper Dorus de Vries pulled off several fine saves to help Forest stay in the game despite limited opportunities.

Córdoba, who play in the Spanish second division, registered a stunning 28 shots on the Forest goal, with just 11 of those on target. However, they were unable to make their dominance count as Forest's back line put on a brave and classy performance to support their in-form goalkeeper.

With less than 10 minutes to go, Córdoba winger Fidel got a rare chance on goal and unleashed a venomous shot that de Vries could only parry, but Jack Hobbs made a goal line clearance reminiscent of Ashley Cole's finest moments in a Chelsea shirt.

              Oostende upended by classy Forest

Michail Antonio scored one and set up Lars Veldwijk as Nottingham Forest claimed a 2-0 win over K.V. Oostende, making it three wins out of three and no goals conceded in Group A of the European Shield in Belgium.

Antonio burst down the wing from an Oostende corner, receiving a lob from Andy Reid in space and cutting in before unleashing a fiery shot past Jean Chopin. The London native then repeated the effort, this time laying a pass on for his Dutch teammate to register his fourth goal of the tournament.

At the other end, Forest's defence remained relatively untroubled barring a set piece routine that saw Jordan Lukaku's header ruled offside. Jack Hobbs marshalled a fantastically organised back line, constantly working in tandem with Michael Mancienne to record 11 tackles from central defence.

Forest go rampant in Gent's backyard

Lars Veldwijk scored four times, including a hat-trick in the space of eight minutes, as Nottingham Forest trounced K.A.A. Gent 6-0 in the semi-final of the European Shield. The Dutch forward can now claim eight goals in the tournament, making him almost certain to finish as its top scorer.

But despite Veldwijk's scoring feats, it was Michail Antonio who was the game's outstanding player. Time after time, the English winger beat his opposition full back and opened up channels of space in which he dazzled and mesmerised with his trickery and dribbling. In a performance reminiscent of Eden Hazard's finest days at Lille, Antonio laid on four assists with a 97% pass completion rate.

After scoring his fourth, Veldwijk immediately turned provider with a slick pass that set up Britt Assombalonga for his first goal in preseason. Chris Cohen, who came on as a late substitute for Andy Reid, scored a sixth for Forest within minutes of his arrival.

Gent were left nursing their wounds for the last 10 minutes, too timid to go in search of a consolation goal yet too beaten to defend properly. However, thanks to some timely intervention from manager Indi Blue, Forest chose to keep the ball for the majority of that time rather than seek what could have easily been a 10-goal margin.

Forest will now face off against Sporting Lokeren in the final after the Belgian side beat Cagliari 1-0 in the other semi-final.

Forest trump Lokeren to win Euro Shield

Henri Lansbury was on target twice in 10 minutes after Eric Lichaj scored the opener, giving Nottingham Forest a 3-1 win and the European Shield.

Lichaj, whose superb form on the right of a four-man defence was key to Forest not conceding a single goal until the final, played a neat one-two with Chris Burke before taking the ball into the box, driving hard and low to beat Boubacar Barry.

The deadly strike force of Michail Antonio and Lars Veldwijk, previously unplayable in four games, were superbly marshalled. But where one threat is contained, another finds the space, and so it was from midfield.

Lansbury, who had been quietly pulling the strings for Forest, alerted Europe to his abilities with a well-placed header from Andy Reid's corner kick just minutes before halftime. He then added his second and Forest's third shortly after the break, launching a stunning effort from the edge of the box that went past Barry and perfectly into the top corner.

With minutes to go, Lichaj slipped in the box during a late Lokeren attack, causing a shot to ricochet off his hand. Marko Mirić put away the resulting spot kick, the only goal Forest conceded in 450 minutes of preseason.

However, at the final whistle it was Forest who were jubilant, as Lansbury lifted the trophy alongside Chris Cohen, with a visibly elated Indi Blue watching from the sidelines as he applauded Forest's away supporters, who had travelled en masse to see their team play in a showpiece event.

In the aftermath, European Shield organisers named Antonio as the outstanding player of the tournament. The wide man from London scored just one goal but created seven assists, all of which were scored by Veldwijk.

A press conference with Blue after the match yielded these interesting quotes.

On the performance of Michail Antonio: "With his pace and agility, Micky is untouchable. Add to that he's a fine dribbler and can score a few goals himself, and we have a very potent winger who can also be a forward."

On the decision to recall Lars Veldwijk: "Lars is a big lad, very strong and good in the air, but also adept with his feet from inside and outside the box. And of course, him in the middle gives us the option of playing Britt Assombalonga as a third striker up front. It was a necessary decision after the loan move for Danny Ings was ruled unlawful by The Football League."

On the influence of Henri Lansbury: "Every single team that wants to achieve something needs a midfielder with technique, vision and control. We have that in Henri, who has learned from some of the finest coaches in England at Arsenal's youth academy. He has great potential and I am to help him deliver on the expectations we all have of him."

On the watertight back five: "I hate conceding goals. Absolutely detest it. And this lot share my views. The one goal we did concede, you can make a case for the penalty not being given to begin with. But to score 16 and let in just one is a fantastic achievement. If we can do that over 16 games in the league, I'll be a happy man!"

I did indeed. I got a pretty decent offer for him and decided to pull the trigger since I had a promising keeper from my youth academy waiting in the wings. I also brought in Stephen Henderson from Charlton in the mean time to take over until he is fully ready.

I will admit though that I have regretted it. Granted the move up to the Premier League plays into it, but I have definitely been conceding more and Long was nothing short of outstanding for me in between the sticks. Despite the rating, Long was actually one of the better keepers performance wise that I have had in this game.

Haha, yep, I can't remember the last time a side counter attacked as well as Forest did. I wasn't even shocked when we were losing against them because they managed it so well; it's a great shame that i've not experienced the same from any other team...

It's going well thanks and i've got one or two games yet to play until I'll be posting another update but i've just been kinda preoccupied with the Euros and other games like Football manager and a sweet survival-type game called This War of Mine. You'll hopefully be getting an update very soon though!

                    FIFA 15 - Season 10 (2023/2024)

                    September

                    Barclays Premier League (09/09)
                    Arsenal | 0-1 | Newcastle

                    13’ Sanogo (Hajrović)

In this crucial early-season game, we managed to play really well with our new signings. The game opened up with a classic Yaya Sanogo goal; the ball was exquisitely sent in from the right by Izet for Yaya who beat his man in the air before heading the ball past Szczęsny for the opening goal. In the 72nd minute, an Antoine Griezmann cross turns into an accurate bottom corner shot but Conor Compton slides in to clear the ball of the line to get us the win!

                    MotM: Izet Hajrović (7.6)

Making their Debut: Yaya Sanogo, Sanchez Ayala, Conor Compton, Kris O’Hara

                    Europa League (14/09)
                    Newcastle | 3-1 | PAOK

                    18’, 58’ Seager || 25’ Compton (P)
                    15’ Qose

After being disappointingly beaten at a corner after quarter of an hour, it only takes us three minutes to answer back due to a magnificent Jake Seager run and narrow finish with his weaker left foot to beat the keeper at his near post. Seven minutes after Seager’s debut goal, Hajrović uses some amazing control to flick the ball out the way of the tackle ending up with the defender getting all the man. Compton sends the keeper the wrong way to put us into the lead. Jake Seager tried to cross the ball in low to the back post but it was intercepted. The ball rolls freely into the centre of the penalty area where Seager uses his reactions and speed to pounce on the chance for his second of the game.

                    MotM: Jake Seager (8.0)

                    Making Their Debut: Jake Seager

                    Barclays Premier League (17/09)
                    Newcastle Utd | 3-0 | Crystal Palace

                    8’, 50’ Sanogo || 24’ Binnom-Williams (OG)

Another master class by one of our top strikers as Ameobi’s low cross from the left allows Sanogo to open up his body and place the ball into the far right corner with his right foot; absolutely clinical by the Frenchman! Sanogo gets in the way of a clearance in the Palace penalty area and manages to get a shot away which Butland saves, but the ball cannons back of the knee of Binnom-Williams on the rebound for the second goal for the Magpies. In the 50th minute, Navaratil absolutely dominates Victor Wanyama for strength and pace deep in the Palace half. He manages to whip a superb ball into the middle where Sanogo can rise above his markers to head home.

                    MotM: Yaya Sanogo (9.5)

Capital One Cup Round 3 (20/09)
                    Aston Villa | 0-4 | Newcastle

                    57’, 70’ Seager || 79’ Compton || 83’ Armstrong

After a lacklustre first half, both sides try to push for the opening goal which Newcastle manage to do through a lovely ball over the top from Campbell to Seager who hits the ball first time on the half-volley with his weaker left foot for a magnificent goal. In the 70th minute, a goal kick goes straight to the head of Bauer who nods the ball down to Seager who turns his marker before using his pace to burst into the box and beat Glen Mabil at his near post.

Nine minutes later, Conor Compton chases down the Aston Villa defence and wins the ball inside their area. All he has to do is nudge the ball onto his left foot and place the ball around Mabil and into the bottom corner.

Newcastle make it four with seven minutes to go as Armstrong breaks into the box before lofting the ball to the back post where Ayala heads the ball onto the crossbar before Armstrong gobbles up the rebound.

                    MotM: Jake Seager (8.1)

                    Barclays Premier League (23/09)
                    Tottenham | 0-4 | Newcastle

                    22’, 41’ Sanogo || 54’ Ameobi (Navaratil) || 66’ Green (og)

After being utterly dominated for the first 20 minutes of the game, everything we touch turns to pure goald as our first shot gets us our first goal as a cross by Ameobi is poorly cleared away which allows Sanogo to pounce on the ball to place it past Lloris and into the back of the net.

Compton cuts in from a throw-in on the right. His shot is deflected to Yaya Sanogo who takes a touch with his knee before smashing the ball with the outside of his right boot which curls around the diving Lloris for the Frenchman’s second of the game.

Navratil floats the ball into the box from a corner where Ameobi gets his head to it. Hugo Lloris backtracks slightly but can only watch as the ball dips just in time to make it three for Newcastle!

In the 66th minute, Sammy Ameobi intercepts a poor pass to break free into the box before delivering a low cross to the middle. Spurs defender Matt Green has no choice but to stick his leg out to stop Sanogo from scoring but has to deal with an own goal instead.

                    MotM: Yaya Sanogo (8.6)

                    Europa League (28/09)
                    KV Mechelen | 1-3 | Newcastle Utd

                    82’ Mané
                    28’ Seager (Ameobi)
                    || 59’ Compton (P) (Seager) || 86’ Sanogo (Haïdara)

Ameobi on the left side of the half-way line slots the ball through the defence and onto the run of Jake Seager who opens up his body to place the ball past the keeper in the one-on-one situation.

Just over half an hour after our 28th minute goal, Jake Seager is fouled in the area which allows Conor Compton to send the keeper the wrong way for the 2-0 lead.

Moussa Sané brings one back for the Belgian team through Spajić allowing the striker to be onside as he smashes the ball into the top corner in the 82nd minute.

Four minutes after Mechelen’s hopeful goal, Haïdara gathers the ball on the right from a free-kick. He turns onto his stronger left foot before delivering a low ball into the box for the free Yaya Sanogo who nonchalantly finishes past the keeper from close range. You just can’t give the Frenchmen that much space in the penalty area or he’ll make you pay for it.

                    MotM: Massadio Haïdara (7.6)

Jake Seager has suffered a hyper extended knee and will be out for 3 weeks.

                    Yaya Sanogo (AKA ‘The Frenchman’)

He’s is as clinical as ever! When you say he’s not clever, we’ll say ‘oh yeah whatever’!

Sorry about that...but anyway, six goals in seven games is impressive due to the Frenchman’s three substitute appearances. He’s just too OP.

                    My Thoughts:

The New Signings - Yaya Sanogo with six goals in seven games and then there’s Jake Seager with five goals and an assist. The competition between these two is immense but healthy. I still don’t really know who is my number one striker at the moment and maybe I just won’t have one and just play either of the two depending on the opposition.

Kris O’Hara made some magnificent saves this month and is such a promising lad. He could be one of the best keepers once he gets some more years under his belt. The same goes with Conor Compton whose got himself a couple of goals from right back but we all know that’s what to expect from him.

The Results – We’ve won every game this month which has shocked me with the likes of Arsenal and Spurs up against us. Arsenal could be pushing for the title and proved a difficult nut to crack except for a Sanogo header but Spurs was a totally different story; we played well, sure, but four-nil was humiliating for them after dominating us for most of the game. We were simply much more clinical than them and our first four shots were all goals if I remember correctly.

Exeter – Exeter are still in tenth but I reckon that’ll change soon. We have been matched up against them in the BPL in two months time and I’m really looking forward to what tactics they employ, their formation and their player selection too. I might go JHedges-style and to a whole post on the match too.

October – October looks to be a testing month with Southampton and Josip Drmić on the twenty-first and Manchester City in the Capital One Cup on the twenty-fourth. Really looking forward to it but can’t wait till November where we get to play against Exeter in the Premier League.

For a second consecutive pre-season The Exiles accepted an invitation to the European International Cup (EIC) which this time was taking place in France, a move that pleased their starting striker pair. Here's how they fared in the EIC:

                      League Match 1
Norwich City - Newport County (2-3)
                      Mbokani 17'
                      Giles 24' (Gordon)
                      Ambrose 37' (Odubajo)
                      Ambrose 90'

                      Howson 90+'

The Exiles exercised several demons by getting this victory on the road, getting a win in their debut in the league while proving themselves against a team that beat them in the COC final a couple of seasons ago. Ambrose seemed to knock off the rust during the last pre-season game and looked ready to pick up right where he left off at the end of last season.

Capital One Cup - 1st Round
Newport County - Rotherham Utd (3-2)
                      Martinez 19' (OG)
                      Nelson 32' (Fernandes)
                      Ringdal Støvland 80' (Potter)

                      Bowery 84'
                      Feddal 105 (pen)
                      P. Miller 91'

The Exiles' B-squad was pushed to their limits in this cup match-up and a late acquisition for Newport County paid off as loanee Youssef Feddal was fouled inside the box in extra time, then proceeded to convert the ensuing penalty kick to give Marccelino's squad a narrow victory to get off to a good start in the COC.

                      League Match 2
                      Newport County - Wolves (0-1)
                      Coady 31'

Conor Coady scored on one of the two shots Wolverhampton was able to get off all game long (the only one on target) and that was enough for the Wolves to steal three points at Rodney Parade as The Exiles' 12 shots (9 on goal) weren't enough to find the back of the net.

                      League Match 3
                      Reading - Newport County (4-1)
                      Thuram 21' (Gordon)
                      Thuram 34' (Gordon)
                      Ambrose 38' (Gordon)
                      Thuram 63' (Ambrose)

                      Falatah 90+'
                      B. Moore 28'

Marcus Thuram is officially back, scoring a hat-trick to lead the Exiles to bounce-back victory on the road. The Frenchman was on fire in this game, putting pressure on Reading's defense all game long and finishing with 4 of his 5 shots on target and a 9.8 game rating to earn MOM honors. Quietly behind him was Clark Gordon who gathered up half the number of assists he had all of last season in this game alone.

Marcus Thuram earned the game ball on this night.

                      League Match 4
                      Newport County - Brighton (5-2)
                      Vydra 12'
                      Giles 31' (B. Moore)
                      Gordon 35'
                      Ambrose 50' (pen)

                      Baldock 64'
                      Gordon 66' (Ambrose)
                      Ambrose 73' (Gordon)

The Exiles wrapped up league play in August with another convincing offensive performance as Gordon and Ambrose terrified Brighton's defense time and time again. Gordon's first score came as a result of an Ambrose shot that was saved by David Stockdale but deflected towards the youngster from Scotland who calmly put the ball at the back of the net.

Capital One Cup - 2nd Round
Newport County - York City (2-1)
                      P. Miller 32' (Ringdal Støvland)
                      Rzonca 45+'
                      Ringdal Støvland 60' (Potter)

The Exiles' B-squad got the job done in cup play once again as Kjetil Ringdal Støvland headed home a corner kick from Ben Potter to give Newport County the lead for good in a game that shouldn't have been as close as the final score indicates. The youngsters for Marccelino's squad fired 16 shots (11 on goal) and the young striker pair once again showed good form.

Clark Gordon was named Player of the Month for the month of August.

Marccelino's Dairy: I'm pleased with how we've started the season dating back to our showing during the pre-season tournament. It's a small sample but I don't think many will continue to wonder whether we belong in the league. Even our loss in league play is something I'm not that upset about because we played well, we play like that more often than not we'll get a draw if not a win. I also feel good about how the B-squad has performed early on, they've faced some adversity which is actually a good thing as the squad is mostly composed of youngsters who need that kind of experience. I'm somewhat concerned about how our new starting CB's have performed (we haven't head a clean sheet) but it's very early in the season and they're adjusting to a new league.

Obviously we didn't do a whole lot during the transfer window and as a result we're aiming to be big players in the upcoming winter window. With that in mind the board and I decided not to use any funds on scouting youth talent during this first half of the season even if the roster in our youth squad currently is very short. Let's take a look at the academy:

CAM - Daniele Martella (56 OVR, 87-94 POT): 17-year old from Italy who is very highly rated by our staff as well as outside sources. While he isn't as advanced in his development as other prospects in our club we're committed to working as much as needed with him to help him become a future part of our roster and hopefully reach his potential.

CDM - Doke Boëtius (59 OVR, 81-87): 16-year old from Netherlands who joins a crowded group of youngsters at CDM (Dall'Oglio, Ichigawa, Kagome). He'll need to be patient and work hard in the academy and he's been doing just that so far.

CAM - Andrea De Girolamo (64 OVR, 77-91): 18-year old from Italy whose potential has increased a bit from our initial evaluation of him and who looks much closer to being ready to contribute to the roster in some way or form. Standing at 5'7", 145lbs, De Girolamo is a demon with the ball at his feet in the academy thanks to his combination of agility (75), dribbling (73), ball control (73), and acceleration (71).

RB - Willem Van Hout (47 OVR, 77-85): This 16-year old from Belgium is still very raw but exhibits very good potential and coaches in the academy are trying to make sure he remains focused on working on developing his game. Doesn't possess the pace the team would like at the position but Marccelino is keeping more of an open mind when it comes to that after watching Fernandes play.

                        Conclusion
So there it is folks. Two different lineups and two different playing styles. With the starting eleven I am much more patient, slowly moving the ball forward with short passes. When the ball gets to Mackail-Smith, I'll either make a one touch pass or hold it until other teammates arrive. The main goal is to find space on the wings and cross the ball, or get the ball to Mackail-Smith when the defense has been pulled out of position by other teammates. With the B-Team the game is a lot faster. Since the team shifts to attack quicker each play is different, but whenever there is space to cross and Pigott is in the box I do not hesitate since Pigott has a higher chance of winning the aerial battle. It's has been a lot easier to score with the B-Team, but I enjoy using the 4-1-4-1 formation more. With Guadalajara I was using a 4-2-3-1 so I want to switch it up so that I don't get bored as easily.

The reserves usually get play time as substitutes during B-Team matches or every now and then they'll come out to bench with the first team. Even though they are reserved I am still watching them very closely and there are a couple players that have been pushing to make it to the B-Team. I haven't began youth scouting yet but I'm eager to get the academy started. I plan to hire my first scout after the transfer window that way I'll know for sure how much spending money I have.

Next update is coming up soon
                        Thanks For Reading!

                          Squad Update

                          Starting XI

The new manager, Proment, decided to go with a 4-2-3-1 after making some additions to the squad. With several defensive midfielders already on the squad, using the two holding midfielders made the most sense to build around. Also, the lack of quality strikers made it easy when deciding to use one up front or a duo. This also allowed Ngbakoto, the all time goal scorer for the club at only 23 years old, the freedom to cut inside and do what he does best out on that left wing. The key signing for the new boss was Kevin Mayi, who slots right into the starting XI and gives the team a much needed boost of pace that they were missing.

Match Summary: Carles Gil got the ball out wide right and sent a cross to the far post where a diving Agbonlahor was there to head it back into the goal for the opener. Agbonlahor bagged his brace with another header after Grealish crossed it in from the left and he nodded it past the keeper. Cameron won the ball on the right wing and attacked towards the middle before playing the ball to Townsend right in front of goal for the first time shot around the keeper. Ryan won the ball inside the box and he attacked the end line to send a ball straight across the face of the goal where Townsend was waiting to tap it in for the last minute equalizer.

Match Summary: Rooney took advantage of the young player Mbuti as he tried to dribble out of the back and he just stripped it from him to go and easily beat the keeper in a one-on-one. Rooney took advantage of the defense again taking away a bad trap out of the air and once again go through on goal with only the keeper to beat and there was never a doubt that he would finish it.
