The Tyne-Wear Derby’s ferocious! Both sets of fans were making as much noise as possible before Silvan Widmer found Hilal Karami on the left who manages to cut inside and place a lovely ball across O’Hara and into the far corner which silenced the home crowd.

Players protest around the referee after a poor challenge by Sunderland defender Walter Ortigoza on Angella. The ref points to the penalty spot which Guidetti sends the keeper the wrong way as the result.

One minute later, the score becomes 2-1 as Guidetti’s shot is saved by Bond but rolls out onto the left wing where Angella cuts the ball back to unmarked Andy Ashton who takes a touch before pulling the trigger, sending the ball into the far corner. There was nothing Bond could do about it.

In the 20th minute, a corner by Sanchez Ayala finds the head of 6 foot 6 Alassane Mandanne who easily glances the ball into the net for his first goal in a Newcastle shirt to make the score 3-1.

Martl Rist, Defensive Midfielder, 68 Ovr, 2-year-loan to Union Berlin

Ristl isn't good enough to get playing time for us yet, but he might have the potential to become a solid depth player in the upcoming years. That's why a 2-year-loan in a team where he will get playing time was the best option for both the club and him.

Jan Kliment, Striker, 72 Ovr, 1-year-loan to Real Valladolid

The 23-year-old Kliment has been showing glimpses of potential but he still isn't good enough to feature regularly in the team. Another loan spell will help him to improve a bit more.

Shawn Parker, Striker, 71 Ovr, €2,800,000 to RB Leipzig

Unfortunately Parker never found his place in the team or reached his potential, and after two disappointing years we decided that it was time to part ways with him.

Alexander Ring, Central Midfielder, 72 Ovr, €2,900,000 to Eintracht Frankfurt

The Finnish midfielder had been complaining about a lack of playing time for half a season, and after signing someone to play in Ring's position we decided to sell him.

Johannes Flum, Defensive Midfielder, 73 Ovr, €3,000,000 to Mainz 05

A similar story the one of Alexander Ring: didn't get a lot of playing time -> started to complain -> dropped further down the pecking order due to a new signing -> got sold.

Emiliano Insua, Left Back, 78 Ovr, €12,250,000 to West Bromwich

We were not keen on selling Insua as he had had a solid last season, but WBA were willing to match our high counter-offer of a bit over €12M for the 28-year-old defender.

Filip Kostic, Left Midfielder, 82 Ovr, €45,000,000 to Sunderland

Our biggest transfer dealing by a large margin was selling Filip Kostic for €45 million to Sunderland. The winger, who had an average last season, had a market value of around €25M. Sunderland were willing to pay nearly twice that much, and now I will be laughing all the way to the bank.

Salif Sané

77 Ovr, Defensive Midfielder, 27 Years Old, Senegal

VfB Stuttgart signed several players this transfer window, the first and cheapest of them being Salif Sané. The 27-year-old arrived from the recently-relegated side Hannover 96 where he was one of the better players of the team since joining them in 2013. The 6'5'' defensive midfielder is dominant in the air, and his good tackling ability makes him a good option as a central defender, too.

Niklas Stark

76 Ovr, Centre Back, 22 Years Old, Germany

€7,200,000 + Duje Caleta-Car

One of the biggest issues Stuttgart had last season was their inconsistent and slow defence. The club now hopes that the purchase of one of Germany's top defensive talents, Niklas Stark, will sort this issue out. The 22-year-old German youth international arrived from fellow Bundesliga side Hertha BSC for €7,2M and Duje Caleta-Car, a centre-back who was never able to break into Stuttgart's starting eleven. Stark is a strong player, who can also play as a defensive midfielder.

Jonas Hector

78 Ovr, Left Back, 27 Years Old, Germany

€8,700,000

After selling Emiliano Insua, Stuttgart were fast to find a replacement for the left back in the form of Köln defender Jonas Hector. The 27-year-old cost Stuttgart just under nine million, and will face high expectations at his new club. The well-rounded Hector should be able to live up to them as he has been part of the German national team since 2014, gaining several caps for them.

Sebastian Rode

80 Ovr, Defensive Midfielder, 26 Years Old, Germany

€14,000,000

VfB Stuttgart signed another defensive player in the form of Bayern München's Sebastian Rode. The 26-year-old Rode never managed to get a lot of playing time in Bayern's star-filled team, and a move away from the German champions was inevitable. The German midfielder is a good passer of the ball and he possesses immense stamina, making him a very capable box-to-box player. Furthermore, Rode can play in many positions across midfield and defence, making him a valuable new asset to Stuttgart.

Jairo Samperio

78 Ovr, Left Midfielder, 24 Years Old, Spain

€14,500,000

After dropping a transfer bomb and selling Filip Kostic for €45M, Stuttgart reportedly made bids for Leroy Sané, Kingsley Coman and Andre Schürrle. The Reds decided to replace Kostic with a lesser-known winger, though, and ended up signing Mainz 05's star man Jairo Samperio, or simply Jairo. The 24-year-old Spaniard has been one of Mainz's best players over the last couple of years and he helped them finish in a Europa League spot with his eight goals and eight assists in the 2015-16 campaign. Additionally, Jairo's pace and dribbling abilities make him a very dangerous player.

Hakim Ziyech

79 Ovr, Attacking Midfielder, 24 Years Old, Morocco

€15,000,000

VfB Stuttgart's most expensive purchase of the window was the Moroccan attacking midfielder Hakim Ziyech, who joined the team from Dutch side FC Twente for a fee of €15M. The 24-year-old Morocco international has arguably been Twente's best player for the last three years, reaching double-digit goal and assist figures in all of those years. Ziyech is a very well rounded attacking player, who can play everywhere in attack. It is not certain where he will play in Stuttgart's system.

A very disappointing start to a new season. Both teams had some chances but neither side was good enough to score from them. On the bright side, we kept a clean sheet.

Fun fact: since our promotion back to the Bundesliga a year ago, we are unbeaten against Bayern with two draws and a win. We managed to take the lead against the German champions in this match with Davie Selke's powerful shot into the top left, but right before the break Thomas Müller broke free through our slow, pre-Niklas Stark defence to equalise.

My Thoughts

League Form - Even though draws against Bayern and Leverkusen are very good results, I can't help but feel disappointed about getting three points from three games. We are only three points away from a Champions League spot, though. At the same time I'm quite glad about our struggles so far, because it's something I wished for.

Transfers - Departures first: Shawn Parker was very poor for us and he grew by a single rating in two seasons, so there was no point in keeping him. Alexander Ring and Johannes Flum were complaining and they weren't going to get game time because of us signing Sané and Rode, so they were sold. Emiliano Insua was sold because we received a good offer for him, and the reason for Kostic leaving is the same.

Arrivals next: our defensive midfielder Serey Die is retiring at the end of the season, while Ádám Nagy is inconsistent and his stamina is poor. That is why I wanted to sign a new, high-quality defensive midfielder, and Salif Sané is exactly that. I have had my eyes on him for quite some time and I'm glad I can finally use him on the game.

Sebastian Rode arrived for a similar reason. Christian Gentner, who used to start in Rode's position, is getting older and his rating is starting to decrease. Rode simply adds more quality to the squad, and he is also younger.

Niklas Stark is someone who I didn't plan to sign at the beginning of the transfer window, but after the first two games of the season I decided that we need a new, relatively quick and strong centre back to strengthen our defence. Speaking of defenders, the only reason why Jonas Hector was bought is that we needed to replace Emiliano Insua.

Things get a little bit more interesting with Jairo Samperio. We received €45M for Kostic, so I wasn't sure whether I should splash the cash or not. As mentioned above, I made offers for Leroy Sané, Kingsley Coman, and Andre Schürrle, all of which got accepted. I then had a dilemma of choosing a 'realistic' option. We achieved promotion last season and finished second in the league, but that could've been pure luck. Schürrle plays for Wolfsburg who finished third last season, so he wouldn't be tempted by this move. Sané's Schalke play in the Europa League and he's one of their stars, so that transfer wouldn't make too much sense, either. Kingsley Coman on the other hand just won the Serie A title, as a rotational player, though. so he could be tempted by first-team football. At the end I decided to go for Jairo from ninth-placed Mainz because he just felt right and Mainz are not playing European football, which is something we can offer him.

Finally, we have Hakim Ziyech. He's another player I was not going to sign at first, but then I decided to go for him. Balázs Dzsudzsák is getting older and starting to go down in his rating, while our second-choice CAM Hany Mukhtar is inconsistent and not first-team quality. Signing Ziyech improves our bench, offers us a very good option for the future and puts pressure on Dzsudzsák.

Champions League - The Champions League group stage draw had been made, and honestly, I was left shocked by it. We are in the group of death, which consists of Spanish champions Real Madrid, Turkish top two team Fenerbahce and apparently a reborn AC Milan. It won't be easy at all, but if things go well, we could just clinch a second-placed finish.

Board Objectives - Last but not least, the objectives that the board set to us are very doable. They want us to qualify for the Europa League, reach the round of 32 in the DFB Pokal (automatically done), and reach the knockout stages of the Champions League.

Whoa! I've just had around 100 job offers come in for the managerial spot. If I decide to leave at the end of the season I have to oppertunity to move so many clubs! A lot of them interest me too. I have a plan to spice the career up a little but will probably cost me with not winning as much as I do with Newcastle and Exeter so I'm reluctant to agree to any big jobs because of that.

If any of you have any preferences just say! I just needed to get all my thoughts down so wrote this below.

Question, do you guys ever train players that aren't 'promising' (notated by the icon)?

Also, what determines whether they have this icon? I've seen (young) players lose it--midseason. Any idea how all this works?

I train players who are not promosing pretty much all the time, usually in the form of older players who I don't want to decrease in ratings or in the form of young players who don't have the icon. Also, I have no clue how the icon works.

Personally I would take the Mainz, Bochum, Hertha (presuming they are still in the Bundesliga) or Malaga job offer. All of them seem like interesting projects for a few seasons, and all of them would also provide a bit of challenge.

Has anyone bought Gareth Bale in their career mode? I bought him in the first transfer window, played with him 3-4 games, and lost him the rest of the season. Now, 2nd season with him--he's out for 2 months again.

Good grief, paid £51m for him. Anyone else had similar fortune with him?

Some background info here; I hypothesized that the reason Exeter are doing so bad is because they are still using the 3-4-2-1. They've been hounding me to join their club again throughout the whole year so they had like a permanent job offer forwarded to me. Once I had played all of Newcastle's games, I joined Exeter to change their formation. I then exploited the annoying bug that fires you at the end of the season even if you've just joined. I got 'sacked' and then had over 100 job offers :P It's a pain to explain what I did but hopefully this makes some sense.

Hmm, thanks for your thoughts! And yeah, Hertha are definitely still in the Bundesliga; their expectations would be for me to reach a Europa League spot. The german GTN scout sent back some cool-looking players from Hertha too but...they're like, your team!

Does trying to purchase a 35-year-old Gareth Bale count? XD

Even in my CM, I remember injuring him whilst playing against the 30-odd old Bale XD

It would be fun to see someone else make the team amazing... or ruin it, but hopefully make it better and win trophies with it.

bachelor party as well, luckily I narrowly avoided best man duties so I get to just show up and enjoy it!
