I am through 7 matches in my Monterrey CM and am loving it. I have 3 wins, 3 draws and 1 loss. I am sitting 8th in the league with Club America on top. Seattle Sounders are in 3rd and LA Galaxy in 4th but no other MLS team is in the top 8.
I just passed the transfer deadline and decided to sell my 32 year old veteran striker, Humberto Suazo for $6.5 million to Villarreal CF. At this point I couldn't decide whether to go after a striker to take Suazo's spot alongside my young stud Locadia or sign Jonathan Dos Santos to a contract since Barcelona had previously accepted my offer for him but I couldn't afford to sign him. I have 3 other strikers but they are all pretty young.
Ultimately I went with signing Dos Santos for $3.5 million since my midfield didn't have any special players. And what's the use of having two young and upcoming strikers if you don't have anyone to pass it to them? I play in a 4-3-1-2 and decided to put Dos Santos in the CM role. I was going to put him as my CAM but my CAM is this nifty player named Cardoza with 4 star weak foot. I may move Dos Santos to LCM or RCM to see where he fits best.
In my first game with Dos Santos I won 4-2; I only played him a half since he was getting tired probably from international duty with Mexico prior. He did not record an assist or goal but did make the key pass to Opare my RB which allowed Opare to make an even better pass to Cardoza who scored the first goal. Speaking of Opare, he had 2 assists and has 4 on the season; his overall rating is up to a 71 and he has definitely been the MVP of my team. His pace is unbelievable and has the ability to cross the ball once he gets a step on the defender. Plus on defense he rarely gets beaten off the dribble.
In that particular game, I would have had a clean sheet if not for two bogus penalty calls which obviously led to 2 goals. I managed to score a penalty of my own with Locadia who has 4 goals on the year. The award for vulture of the season so far has been my back-up striker Petar Slišković the Croatian whom I signed for $1.5 million out of FSV Mainz 05. He has scored two goals on the season, both key goals and both came off a fortunate deflection off the keeper which enabled him to score relatively easily from close range. One of those came in this match where Locadia sent a header that bounced off the diving keeper right to Sliskovic's boot.
I really like my team; I am confident I made the right decision in signing Dos Santos because he has already made an impact as a playmaker in his short stay at Monterrey. The key to the season is turning those draws into wins; and Opare developing chemistry with Dos Santos and Locadia.
