Re: How's Your FIFA 14 Career Mode Going?

Update on Nottingham Forest, season 4

Ran into a bit of an error so I had to reload to the end of last season and begin afresh. The board has given me £44.5 million and asked me to win the league, Champions Cup, and the domestic cup. I think we should be able to win at least one of the first two.

    Transfer window, summer 2016

I had some great results with the 4-3-3 false nine and decided to go with that. Boy was I right. My first piece of business was buying Stephan El Shaarawy from Milan for £10.5 million plus Jonathan Biabiany. This was followed by £5 million and Gary Mackay-Steven for Slovakia winger Miroslav Stoch from PAOK. His long shots are amazing, and I love shooting from distance. I also bid £8.75 million for Luke Shaw who was still at Southamoton.

A couple of players left the club, too. Nathan Ake moved to Southampton for £1 million, and Bruno Martins Indi went to QPR for £2 million. A couple of my young rejects moved to League One and League Two teams on free deals (counter-offer of £0), and loan deals came through for Myles Ince (Reading) and Victor Andrade (Birmingham City).

I went up against Paris Saint-Germain in the first friendly with the following team: Forster; Clyne, Dier, Martinez, Cresswell; Medel, Oscar, Lansbury; Traore, Stoch, El Shaarawy. Stoch opened the scoring in the seventh minute, but PSG equalised in the 13th through their Ibra regen. Stoch scored again, and so did Ibra Mk II. It was 2-2 at the break, so I subbed off Lansbury for Mutch. El Shaarawy popped one in around the hour mark, and Rabiot got on the end of a corner to make it 3-3. With minutes to go, Stoch shot from distance and got a hat-trick in his first game wearing Forest red. The 4-3 thriller was easily the most entertaining game I've played since the Euro League final against Marseille one year ago.

Milan came in for Lacina Traore, and I promised myself I would not sell. He did a great job against PSG but I needed the money to strengthen both the squad and my youth scouting. A £23 million fee was agreed and the Ivorian was a Rossoneri player. Chalobah started his antics again, so I lodged a £10 million bid for Rodrigo Caio of São Paulo, as well as a £7 million bid for Viktor Fischer from Ajax. I've heard great things about the Dane but have never used him, so I figured it was worth a shot.

I did away with Evian 3-0 and Sevilla 4-1, with El Shaarawy and Sanogo (at CF!) scoring in both games. I've sent offers to both Caio and Fischer but have the Community Shield against Chelsea to deal with first. I also had a £1 million bid accepted by Wycombe, for centre back Kortney Hause, currently awaiting the player to agree my offer. Once those three deals go through, I'll still need a first-choice CF and a winger for rotation, as well as another defensive midfielder if Chalobah doesn't pipe down.

Re: How's Your FIFA 14 Career Mode Going?

Well, I have longed to do this and finally gave it a shot. I have always attempted to play as Liverpool, being my favorite squad but starting out with the goal of 'Win the league' in year one with a squad I know isn't there yet put me off.

So, I elected to turn the English League system into a four team ultimo league. Using SoFifa's December 17th Update team rankings. Took the Top 92 squads in the World and threw them into the four tiers. Liverpool fell as a mid table Premier League team and looking at the schedule makes me want to pull my hair out.

      Results So Far:
Napoli (Home) - W 2-1. Gave up an early goal, but responses by Sturridge and Suarez in the 67th minute got the job done.

Real Madrid (Away) - L 0-3. Simply outclassed, too much precision and Bale's strike from 30+ for the 2nd goal pretty much left me tactically wondering what it would take to ever stand on the same plain in the Bernabeu.

My next four (Lord, help me):
FC Porto - Home (Capital One Cup)
Then the gauntlet, 3 fixtures, one week:
Chelsea (Home), Borussia Dortmund (Away), Barcelona (Home)

Is anyone else waiting until the January transfer window to be closed before they start their season? I want to start with the most updated rosters, especially if there are big signings.

Never really thought of that until now but, yes I probably will wait now.

Can you terminate a loan and buy them immediately?

I think I'm going to start one as my favourite club Birmingham City. Get them back into the prem and hopefully win the champions league.

Re: How's Your FIFA 14 Career Mode Going?

Just got past the Winter transfer window in my Real Madrid CM. I signed Kurt Zouma, Oztunali and Anthony Martial. I tried to loan them out but no teams bit but I managed to loan out Morata for a short term.

I received offers for Bale, Suarez, Sergio Ramos and Varane. I declined them all considering it'd be moronic of me to sell any of the first 3 in their prime and Varane at only 20 years old with unlimited potential. Sunderland offered me 20 million dollars for Varane; I can only imagine what he will be worth in 5-6 years.

I am currently sitting second in La Liga behind Barcelona and approaching the second leg of the Spanish Cup semi-finals against Sevilla; we tied 3-3 in the first leg. I am really liking my team; Freddy Guarin has been in form lately scoring on a scorcher from out the the box in two straight matches. The triple headed monster of Bale, Reus and Suarez is unmatched and Alexandre Pato as the back-up striker is world class.

I also have two matches as manager of France coming up in the next week; the first one is against Spain and second is vs. the United States. I have set the final roster for France and it was difficult considering how close the talent level is between the first starter and the last reserve.

Re: How's Your FIFA 14 Career Mode Going?

Update on Nottingham Forest, season 4

I won the Community Shield with a 1-0 victory over Chelsea, goal courtesy Mutch during a post-free kick scramble. Also won my first three league games against Derby (3-0), West Ham (2-0), and Norwich (3-2). But the highlight was my 2-1 Copa Europe win over Barcelona thanks to a late Oscar winner.

I signed Hause, Caio, and Fischer as expected and then made a bid for Deulofeu from Barcelona B, bidding £5 million plus Sanogo. That was promptly accepted and I acquired Deulofeu as my fourth winger under the Squad Rotation Player role. On deadline day, I made use of my remaining £19 million to pry Josh McEachran off Watford for £8 million, as cover in central midfield. I also agreed a deal for Luis Alberto with Liverpool but couldn't sign the player in time, so I may need to sign a backup CF in January (I dislike winter signings and try to avoid them as much as I can).

So far, all my new signings have been amazing. Caio has claimed the CDM role as his own, and all four of my wingers scored on their league debuts. Stoch has been particularly great, scoring some important goals like the equaliser against Barcelona and the winner against Norwich. El Shaarawy is great at hold-up play despite his frame and wide position. Fischer has a wicked finesse shot, and Deulofeu makes these gorgeous runs into the box. I haven't had the chance to try McEachran or Shaw yet, but I will in the coming game against QPR.

In the Champions Cup group stage, I've drawn PSG, Ajax, and Schalke. I reckon I should be able to pick up at least 11 points, which should see me through to the knockout phase. I won't be focusing too much on the domestic cups, just playing the B team and giving it my all. The thing is, I think even my B team can win most games.

Update on Nottingham Forest, season 4

Wow, it seems like this thread is dormant. I reckon it's just the holiday/new year period, what with everyone being busy. Oh well...

So I lost against QPR... quite shambolic actually. I scored early on but they just pummeled me with attack after attack, and Butland just couldn't keep every shot out. Remy and their Park Ji-sung re-gen smacked goals in to beat me 2-1, which pissed me off. No worries, though...

Nottingham Forest and Indiblue made their Champions Cup debut with a 2-1 win over Ajax, a thriller that was made sweeter by the other game in my group turning out to be a 1-1 draw between PSG and Schalke.

I had another exhilarating game against Spurs. As usual, I opened the scoring. Spurs then leveled late in the second half, through an audacious volley by Sturridge. I tried and tried to find a winner, but it wasn't until injury time, when Josh McEachran cut in from the wing and ran across the box to finesse past Julio Cesar. Scoring on your debut is fun, but it's even better when it's the winner.

I simulated my first League Cup game against Everton, devoid of an injured Baines and a suspended Barkley, and the B team won 2-1. I then pummeled City 3-1 at the Etihad, Oscar scoring a brace and setting up Stoch all in the first half. Their solitary strike came in injury time through Mario Gomez, a slick shot from close range that slid between Forster's legs.

Up next was PSG in Europe. Lucas scored first with a crazy dipping shot from way out, but El Shaarawy broke a four-game duck to net similarly (but from closer to the box). Fischer scored a second with a deft finesse, but I conceded a penalty just before halftime, which Lucas promptly put away. In the second half, I brought on Deulofeu and Oscar. The little Spaniard set the Brazilian up to grab the winner, before a crazy Thiago Silva decided to crush Mutch in the box (thankfully no injury). He got sent off, Mutch scored a penalty in injury time, and I won 4-2 at the Parc des Princes.

My next league game away another 4-2, this time at home to West Brom. Oscar scored in the fifth minute, then again at the half-hour mark. Both goals were superb and came from him cutting in from the left flank. West Brom managed to score two goals in the second half, but a Deulofeu brace (including one free header off a corner) made sure I got all three points.

After seven games in the Premiership, I have 18 out of a possible 21 points to stand top of the table -- one point ahead of Manchester United, and two ahead of both Arsenal and Spurs. I've scored a whopping 18 goals and conceded another eight -- nobody is more prolific, and only Arsenal and United have conceded fewer (4 each). I reckon my main challengers this year will be both those teams. United have an 88-rated winger in Juan Manuel Iturbe, as well as 82+ players in key positions across the pitch; Wayne Rooney is on eight goals in six games. Arsenal have the likes of Stephane Ruffier, Nicholas N'Koulou, Paul Pogba, Aaron Ramsey, Jack Wilshere, Luuk de Jong, and Edin Dzeko -- all rated 82 or higher.

In the Champions Cup, I have six points from two games -- six goals scored and three conceded. Schalke have four from two, PSG have one from two, and Ajax have nothing from two. If I beat Schalke, I'll set myself up nicely to progress top of the group. I have to say, PSG aren't nearly as good as they should be. Schalke are top of the Bundesliga, though, and three points clear of Bayern. I reckon they'll be a handful, especially away from home. They have an Ibra re-gen and ridiculously OP youth striker, but they have too many players aged 32+ and not enough depth (if they do, they're not using it).

The false nine formation does one thing better than any other, and that's pulling opposing defenders out of position. When you get their back line out of shape, it frees others up to enjoy well-played chances in space. Or, if your CF is nimble and skillful, he can dribble and shoot himself, which is just what Oscar does best. Once he drags a couple of guys forward, he can play a winger through or beat the man to find himself in acres of space. Distance shooting, finesse, power, speed, control... this guy has it all. I can't believe I considered selling him!

McEachran has been a revelation. Along with Caio at CDM and Mutch at RCM, he's locked the midfield down for me so well. The goal against Spurs and the two assists against City (plus one rocking shot off the crossbar) were just cream on the cake, because he's been so great all over. When we're in a defensive transition, Caio goes deep really quickly. McEachran is always open when Caio recovers the ball, and he keeps the ball moving about safely until everyone else is back in position. In attack, he's always there if I get overwhelmed by the opposition defence and need to move the ball back, waiting just ahead of the centre circle with nobody on him. Imagine, a 77-rated kid who's been in the Championship for the last three seasons keeping two 80-rated, two-time Euro League-winners out of the team! To think I got him for under £10 million...

The only player I'm not too happy with is El Shaarawy, but that's mainly down to me getting a bit selfish when I'm on the ball with him. I often skip the easy pass or one-two to dribble and shoot on goal, and I often end up losing possession. Three goals and two assists in 12 games, though, is not what I was expecting. I saw, and still do see him as my main goal threat along with Oscar. Funnily enough, it's Stoch and Deulofeu who are my top scorers (five each in the league). But with El Shaarawy, I have the option of playing him at CF and resting Oscar if I must. I'm not writing the Italian off though, not by any means. Traore took close to half a season to adjust before lashing in 30+ goals, and El Shaarawy is a far more long-term player.

I'm really happy with the way things are going in this system. In past games, my greatest success has always come when using any formation with one defensive midfielder and two very attacking wide men. I don't know why I took so long to follow up in FIFA 14. My passing is consistently at 80% or more (78% on a bad day), I dominate possession (50-55% against better teams; as much as 70% against minnows and relegation fodder), and the movement is fluid. Even when I lost against QPR, I wasn't mad at the game but at myself -- that's the biggest thing for me.

Re: How's Your FIFA 14 Career Mode Going?

I am new to the FIFA game and while I am not all that new to the game of soccer (or should I say Futbol ... haha) having played the game in my youth, I really do not know very much about any of the professional Premier Soccer Leagues in Europe. The players I know the most would be the Spanish national team (so I guess that would be a good chunk of Barcelona and a handful of Real Madrid players) but I really don't know much about the players/teams from the English Premiere League, only know a little about Bayer Munich in the German Bundesliga and I really don't know all that much about the Italian league or any of the other pro leagues. So I figured what better way to learn about some of these European leagues than to start a "test" manager career where the goal was to become more familiar with the teams and some players. Now initially I am not all that concerned about Transfers nor do I care about playing multi-year careers. But unless I am missing something about FIFA14, when it came time to play my first Friendly game of the season prior to League play, I could only either sim the game or play the game as a player using the game controller. FIFA14 in manager career mode would not let me play the game as CPU vs CPU where I just observed the game like I would as a manager would. Am I missing something here? I know you can do CPU vs CPU games in "Play Now" Friendlies outside of any career mode. Did I miss something or is this just one of those things where managers don't really care about the games outside of the simmed results?

Currently playing a test career with Celtic, (1st time using orion's sliders), didn't make any drastic transfers in January, made it to the Quarter finals of Champions Cup, lost to Real Madrid by one goal. Won the Scottish league by a wide margin, even with Rangers in the league.

Was thinking about making a British League Stucture, was wondering if I should put Celtic in the the Championship or have them sink or swim in the Premier League.

Re: How's Your FIFA 14 Career Mode Going?

I've just completed my first season as Wigan Athletic and for the most part it was pretty successful.

Here is my current starting 11 (and subs):

                            Ali Al-Habsi (GK)
Emmerson Boyce, Gary Caldwell, Ivan Ramis, Luke Shaw (RB,CB,CB,LB)
                            James Mcarthur, Roger Espinoza (RDM,LDM)
                            Shaun Maloney, Callum McManaman (RM,LM)
                            Jordi Gomez (CAM)
                            Grant Holt (ST)

Subs: Scott Carson, Stephen Crainey, Leon Barnet, Nouha Dicko,James McClean, Nick Powell, Stephen Fletcher

                            League:

                            I made a few transfers in the summer window, mostly looking improve the squad size with loan players but also bringing in some more attacking power to cover my two strikers; Marc Antoine Fortune and Grant Holt who are getting old. Here is the list of transfers made in this window;

                            IN

Shaw- Brought in on loan with the aim being to buy him if he fitted in well.

Malarczyk- Brought in on loan add more variety in defence.

                            Dawson- Same as above

Wurtz- Brought in on loan really to see how effective the GTN was at finding decent players but also for more squad depth.

Fletcher- This was the big one. Brought him from Sunderland for 6,000,000 to give more attacking options.

                            OUT

MaCarthy- Not sure why he was still in the squad as he was sold to everton in real life and I thought it unfair to still have him so I sold him to Aston Villa for 3,500,000.

Nicholls- Sent out on loan to build up his overall rating and improve his stats.

                            Angoy- Same as above.

I started off the year quite slowly with all my friendlies ended 0-0. I was bitterly disappointed to lose the Community Shield 1-0 after a 90 minute goal from Ashley Young. When I got into Championship games the first few were also very low scoring and low in action mostly being 0-0 or 1-0 victories as I started to get used to the squad. Eventually it picked up a bit and I started winning more comfortably and scoring earlier. I was top of the league come november and it was a struggle between me a QPR as we each vyed for first place. However my defense was the and after narrowly edging beating QPR in March, they faded away and I secured the title, and automatic promotion comfortably, with 6 games to spare (3 spare to win the title).

I the January transfer window I didn't do much. I brought in Leo Chamber from West Ham for 160,000 and immediately sent him out on loan, hoping to build up his stats. I also brought in Genevois from OGC Nice, after realising I only had one RB, for 700,000 and also drafted in Stones from Everton till the end of the season. I only loaned out one player, a young defender named Garcia, again to build up his stats.

I finished the season with 109 points (33 wins, 10 Draws, 3 Losses) and with a Goal difference of 50. I had the best defense in not only the whole league but also in the other 3 english leagues, only conceding 17 goals, the next closest was Burton with 22. Our top goalscorer was Grant Holt with 18 goals and we kept 31 clean sheets (20 for Al-Habsi and 11 for Scott Carson)

                            League Cup

                            I wasn't really bothered about the league cup to be honest, as I was much more preoccupied with the Europa League and retaining the FA cup and so I simmed the first few matches as they were against lower league sides or sides I thought we would win against. Those first few went like this;

                            3-0 victory over Northampton

                            2-1 victory over Blackburn Rovers

                            1-0 victory over Sunderland

The next game was the last sixteen and since it was against our rivals Bolton i just had to play it. We won comfortably 4-0 with goals coming from Jordi Gomez, Ben Watson and 2 from Stephen Fletcher. We drew everton in the next round which I knew was going to be a tough game but more importantly we would be going up against our former manager (Roberto Martinez) and several of our former players were in the line up (Joel, Kone, Alcaraz). We took an early 1-0 lead thanks to Fortune but sadly they equalised before halftime with none other than Kone. We were pretty evenly matched but the snatched a second goal in the 68th minute thanks to a brilliant Osman volley and went onto win the match, dumping us out agonisingly close to the semi final.

                            F.A Cup

Our first game was a breeze and we comfortably beat huddersfield 2-0 but for our next game we drew chelsea which I always knew was going to be a tough game but was made even harder due to our hectic schedule, which meant we couldn't start our strongest 11. Their superiority was quickly shown and they went 2-0 up but half time with a corner header from Torres and a 30 yard blinder from Mata put us firmly on the back foot. We snatched a goal back in the 74th minute thanks to a curving shot from Espinoza but thanks to some unsportsman like passing around the back and an awful foul on Beausejour by David Luiz (which lead to a 3 week injury and him losing his place in the starting 11) lead to us bowing out without even reaching the last 32.

                            Europa League

Our group consisted of Vitenesse, Estoril and FC St. Gallen and for the first four games everything went great. We won 5-1 in both our first two games against Vitenesse and Estoril which was a suprise even for me. 2-0 and 4-0 victories over FC St, Gallen and Estoril (on the second leg away from home) seemed to confirm our place as groups leaders. However fate was against us and we lost the last 2 games by 1-0 anf finished second in our group with Vitenesse finishing first by a single point.

I was annoyed not to have finished first and I hoped it would not leave us with a hard fixture. We drew lazio in the knockout stages and in our first leg at home we grinded out a 0-0 draw which importantly prevented them from getting an away goal and meant we only had to draw by one or more goals to get through to the next stage. The away game was just as slow and it looked like we would have to go to extra time, maybe even penalties to decide the winner. But in the injury time a fantastic cross was hammered into the top corner by Fortune on the header and we progressed on an aggregate of 1-0.

Our last 16 game was against PSG, who had been knocked out of the Champions League in the group stages and who were hungry for a European trophy. I knew it was going to be tough but luck was on our side as out full starting 11 was well rested and ready for action. The games started out with them being all over us but failing to get a shot on target. We quickly hit them on the break in the 40th minute and after skimming past the defense McManaman scored a goal from just outside the box. Just before half time Holt put a header into the back of the net and we took a suprising 2-0 lead. PSG were back for blood in the second half however and Cavarni brought them back into the game after pushing ramis aside and chipping the ball over Al-Habsi's head. We kept strong however and managed to end the game 2-1 with the Home fixture still to be played. We held the upper hand in the aggregate score and all we needed to do was draw 1-1 or 0-0 to go through, hell we could even lose 1-0. We didn't let the pressure get to us and we held them to a 0-0 draw with Al-Habsi single-handedly preventing them from scoring.

We moved onto the quater finals where we faced Seville. The first game was away and it seemed like it would end 0-0 untill Seville broke forward in the 89th minute ending with Beto scoring the winning. We were dejected and disappointed but we knew all was not lost and that we could still bring it back. The second leg was at home and with the fans behind us we bombarded seville with attack after attack, having 70% possession and 9 shots (4 on target) in the first half yet not managing to score. That soon changed and in the 64th minuete Jordi Gomez weighted a beautiful corner onto the head of Dawson who steered it into the net. We had the goal back but still we did not give up and we kept pressing until in the 79th minute we scored the final and decisive goal with a low drilled shot from Mcarthur into the bottom left corner, overturning the 1-0 aggregate and winning the tie 2-1.

We moved onto the semi final and Udinese whose centrally based squad allowed us much freedom on the wing. Despite this we only managed to grind out a 1-1 draw away with Holt and Di Natale scoring. The next round was at home, where we always picked up the result we needed in the Europa League. This time was no different and we held them too a standstill the whole game a late goal from Gomez helping to seal our place in the final against Tottenham Hotspur.

The final had come, the championship season was over, we had been promoted as champions and Spurs had finished a respectable 3rd behind only Man U and Chelsea. We both had out full squads and we were both gunning for a victory. They took the lead in the 46th minute after a surprisingly quite first half with a soldado header. We fought back and hammered them with shot after shot after shot, something we had become known for over the season. James Mcarthur scored the equaliser in the 73rd minute and the game was not decided after 90 minutes so it went to extra time. Neither team really showed up in the half and hour and it ended goalless which meant that it went to the dreaded penalties. They went first, scoring with Soldado. Jordi Gomez put away the next one. Erkison tried to send it down the middle but Al-Habsi saved it and Fletcher put away the second penalty, putting us in the lead. Lamela fluffed it and put the ball wide and after Dicko put away his, victory was almost in our grasp. Up stepped Paulinho and he tried to drill the ball into the bottom left corner but Al-Habsi got his palm to it and knocked it out much to the Brazillian's dismay. Then up stepped James Mcarthur, scorer of the equaliser and the man who could win us the trophey. He picked his spot, fired in his shot and it flew over the outstretched arm of Lloris, sailing into the back of the net and winning us the Europa League trophy. We were extatic, not only had we achieved promotion and won the league but we had also won our first European trophy.

                            The Future

I already have my plans for next season, I am planning to bring in as many players as possible for the upcoming premier league season. I look forward to Champions League football and Domestic Cup Progress. I have also taken up the Cameroon national team job and am hoping to lead them to world cup Glory. But more on that another time for now i'm just happy to say goodbye to his season, as season that went as well as I could have hoped it would.

Well, after about 15 games, I've finally figured out some sliders that work for me. But it's just so frustrating playing this game when I'm scared to make subs because I'm worried about the game freezing. Not really sure what to do at this point

                                End of August Update

                                Transfers IN + Grade:

CB Attila Fiola (59) Free Transfer B-
Not the best signing I made, more of a bench player that comes in when fatigue begins to hit. Has potential of upper 60's no doubt but unable to break into 1st team yet.

LB Kim Jin Soo (60) Free Transfer A
Great signing, solid defender and surprisingly good at crossing into the 18,

GK Jose Miguel Silbeira (61) Free Transfer A
Great signing, 4-6 games clean sheet, solid all around, best FA keeper, could get into the 70's, fingers crossed

CDM Julian Garrero (64) Free Transfer B
Good holding midfielder, touch is not the best but a good defender, wish his touch was better though

CB/RB Ousmane Viera Diarrassouba (64) Free Transfer A-
Underrated CB/RB from Ivory Coast, I use him as RB, not a fast player but is a monster on corners and on defense

CB Jonathan Gael Velasco (61) Free Transfer B+
Good CB, has potential to be great but seems to be a little sluggish sometimes, Wycombe has two high potential CB so we will see how long Velasco lasts

ST Mo Sharif (61) On Loan from QPR, Future Fee $400,000 A
ST on loan from my favorite team, has the pace to get around defenders, could be leagues top scorer by the end of the year

LM Lalrindika Ralte (56) Free Transfer C
Terrible, absolutely terrible, next... where is Tim Payne in the new update

CM Frankie Sutherland (57) On Loan from QPR, Future Fee $250,000 A+
Best signing so far, might not match the future fee but a great player, completes all passes and through balls, is all over the pitch, stamina needs to improve but one for the future

                                Transfers Out + Grades
ST Jo Kuffour (57) to Stevenage $100,000 A
The arrival of Mo Sharif saw Jo leave the club

ST Junior Morias (54) On Loan to Hibernian A
High potential Jamaican but would not feature this season, could be in the 70's I believe

LM Sam Wood (62) to Charlton Athletic $210,000 F
Should have kept him instead of signing Ralte

CM Stuart Lewis (59) to Shrewsbury Town $160,000 A
Sutherland and Garerro sent Lewis packing
