You know what? No Inter for you or me. Why? Because I played four games, all with different formations and none worked out. Then I started the career, advanced two weeks and just quit it. What did I learn? Don't make votes featuring teams you haven't used. Here are the other two teams. Vote for your favourite and I will probably do a career with it.

        1. Manchester United

        2. Athletic Bilbao

Don't worry, this time I have played with the teams. If you choose Bilbao I will use the Basque-only-policy.

Really, don't start a Man United career. Bilbao would be far more interesting, especially using the Basque-only policy. I've recently done a United one and won the Premier League in the 1st season with me only buying vermaelen and shaw. It will be quite easy to recover their excellency from a couple of seasons back, whereas with Bilbao, you have a great challenge of overcoming Madrid and Barca. Plus with atletico winning the league last year, the timing is perfect for the lesser teams to break through.

I am a very new football fan and have no knowledge of La Liga so can someone explain what a "Basque-only policy" is?

Basque Country is a region of Spain (and a small part of France). Athletic Bilbao is located in the Basque region of Spain and have identified themselves as a "Basque Only" club. They have a policy that only players from the Basque Country can play for their club. So if a Spanish player is say from Southern Spain, Bilbao wouldn't allow him to join the club. If I'm not mistaken I think they have relaxed a little on this policy recently and extending it to people who have Basque ancestry.

Re: How's Your FIFA 14 Career Mode Going?

                      JANUARY:

WINTER INS: Sonny Kittel from Frankfurt (pre contract)
Sekou Junior Bamba from Manchester United (£13 million plus Hedenstad)

WINTER OUTS: Matias Fernandez to Armenia Bielefield (loan until end of the season)

                      BUNDESLIGA

                      Bor. M’gladbach 0–1 Freiburg
It started out as a cagey affair, with neither side creating much in the way of chances. But in the 17th minute, Xhaka was booked. They played the free kick short, I went over to the guy and held B. The ref gave another free kick and sent Xhaka off! I was livid and had to reshuffle things as I’d lost my midfield anchor man. Holtby was subbed off for Stepanenko, Sneijder moved central and Sam came in off his wing to play as a second striker to Locadia. I did have the ball in the net just before half time, but it was ruled out for offside. We went into the 2nd half, and I resigned myself to accepting a draw. I was solely focused on not conceding, but in the 68th minute I broke away, and after a nice ‘1,2’ between Locadia and Sam, the German winger broke away, chopped inside, and finished brilliantly with his weak foot into the far corner. Despite me being 1 man down, I controlled the ball with ease after going ahead, and looked more like scoring a 2nd than Gladbach equalising. But still it remained 1-0 and a marvellous victory for me after going down to 10 men so early on.

                      Freiburg 4–1 Werder Bremen
I fielded my complete 1st team for this game, with the exception of Xhaka who was suspended. Herrera got his 1st start since his return from injury and Jetro Willems was on the bench. The game started dreadfully, Ginter was down hurt deep in my box, and my opponents capitalised to take the lead after only 10 minutes. I did respond very well though, and was back on level terms within 20 minutes thanks to Locadia’s 10th of the season. I attacked ferociously for the remainder of the half, and was justly rewarded in the 45th minute when Sneijder found Locadia in the box, resulting in another goal for the Dutch forward. 6 minutes after the restart, I had a 3rd and a goal of sentimental value for Hector Herrera on his return after 2 months out. Lewis Holtby then scored a worldie after some lovely trickery opened up some space, and he let fly from 30 yards, with the ball sailing into the top corner. That’s how it finished, meaning in the 2 games I played against Werder Bremen, I won 9-1 on aggregate.

                      Mainz 1–1 Freiburg
My early season encounter with the other promoted side was a much closer affair than I anticipated, meaning that I had a somewhat cautious attitude going into this one. Mlapa asked to play, which was slightly frustrating given Locadia’s 2 goals in the last game and me not wanting to play 2 up top. The first half was boring and goalless, but just 7 minutes into the 2nd period, Lewis Holtby found space and dispatched it calmly into the bottom corner. My lead was only intact for 6 minutes though, as Baumgartlinger’s shot somehow found a way through Baumann in the nets, despite it being virtually central. Unfortunately I couldn’t find that illusive 2nd goal and had to settle for a point in a game that I dominated.

Standings at the end of January(all sides have played 23 games)

                      Bayern Munich 56 points
                      Leverkusen 51 points
                      Dortmund 49 points
                      Freiburg 48 points
                      Hoffenheim 42 points
                      Schalke 41 points

                      SQUAD REPORT:
January is always a funny month, because you seem to focus more on the transfers than the games. To be honest, this is probably my 1st career mode on fifa 14 where I have had equal enjoyment in playing the games as I have buying players. I am still torn on the goalkeeper situation, because Baumann is generally better but Ortiz is decent enough and has a huge potential. I don’t know who to go with. He’s 69 rated now so is that good enough to start regularly? My defence will definitely sure up with the arrival of Bamba, who has some insane stats. He suits a full back role much better than the middle due to his height. Fortunately, Jetro Willems has decided to remain at the club after playing some football in January despite being ruled out for half of it. The midfield is consistent, and I had no real desire to change that aspect in the winter window. Locadia has started to show some form, and put on an excellent display against Werder Bremen. Sneijder went his 1st month this season without scoring a goal, but did claim 2 assists which is what he is essentially in the side to do. Sidney Sam has improved this month, notching up 1 goal and 2 assists, plus hitting the woodwork twice against Mainz in that frustrating draw. One thing I noticed is that I need to switch up my defence a little more, as a few of my rotation players are becoming unhappy and I don’t want them to leave. I have slipped to 4th, but now I have a 6 point lead over Hoffenheim, leaving me confident
of securing the desired Champions League. I also purchased Sonny Kittel on a free which was ridiculous really. Had it have been a household name with similar stats then I wouldn’t have bought him, but I see his transfer from a mid-table team to a Champions League team realistic, especially because he’s German, and will slot right into my team.

                      INTERNATIONAL MANAGEMENT:
I accepted the Swiss job to scout through their ranks, but didn’t come across anybody spectacular. Fabian Schar was the best, boasting a rating of 84 at the tender age of just 21. I already knew about him though and I’m in no need of another defender.

                      Side note:
It’s great to see some competition in these Bundesliga careers! I’ll make sure I give a good thrashing to Hoffenheim and Stuttgart when I next play them.

the wife has been giving me some grief about playing a lot so I've had to tone it down lately. That plus the international jobs are creating a delay in my updates but I should be able to wrap up September in the Dagenham CM and get an update in either tonight or tomorrow. Eventful month for sure with two games in the Capital One Cup. Also chico will be a bit disappointed I'm sure.

Oh okay thank you! Thats really interesting and could certainly keep a career mode fresh. How would one go about simulating this in FIFA? I mean you could always look up individual players and whatnot but using youth scouts for fictional players would be much more challenging.

My best advice for the youth issue would be to just Scout Spain/France only and just assume that your scout is only looking in the "Basque" region of those countries. Since it doesn't specify anything more than that there isn't any issue with just acting like your scout has the instructions for Basque only.
