I also have trouble managing abroad.

Re: How's Your FIFA Career Mode Going?

          The Brief

What are the most painful things a football club can experience? Relegation is one. Administration is far worse. Dissolution might be one of the worst. Right up there on the pain charts is being a club in a big city and knowing that you're second best. Everton. Torino. 1860 Munich. Rangers. Being stuck in the shadow of your big brother is certainly one of the most painful things a football club can go through. But then there's always the derby to give life a bit of spice, eh? Galatasaray vs. Fenerbahce in Istanbul never fails to create a buzz unlike any other. The same goes for when Real play Atlético in Madrid, when Milan square off with Inter in the fashion capital of Italy, and when Boca Juniors and River Plate have it out in Buenos Aires. But what happens when you're the city's smaller club and your bigger rival doesn't give you the respect you deserve? What if they don't even care about you or the very fact that you exist? Imagine having a big brother who doesn't even give a damn if you live to see the next day, let alone one who engages you with half the effort he puts into people outside the family? There are only two possible endings. You can try to make yourself as good as you can, hoping to eventually find the sense of approval you crave. Or you could become the best around and pummel him into submission, showing him that you won't take his crap anymore. Today, I start my job of making sure that my new club goes down the second road.

          The Club

Espanyol were founded in 1900 by Catalan student Ángel Rodríguez Ruiz, who disapproved of Barcelona's propensity to allow foreigners to join the club as players and board members. Barcelona in turn viewed Espanyol, one of the clubs to be granted royal patronage, as a Madrid outpost. The dictatorship of Francisco Franco was the turning point in the relationship between the clubs, as Barcelona viewed Espanyol as complying with fascist demands instead of joining their revolutionary resistance. Today, animosity between the clubs is low, but some Catalans still consider it a sin to support Espanyol. Old tensions linger under the surface, and from a young age, Espanyol supporters are brainwashed into believing that theirs is a club that still supports fascism and the influence that Spain's establishment wants to exert over Catalunya. The truth is that fans of Los Periquitos are some of the most passionate and welcoming in Spain, and Espanyol fully integrates foreign players (both white and those of colour) into club and city culture. Barcelona's board, managers and players are so caught up in the rivalry with Real Madrid and attempt at taming the best of Europe that they have no time for Espanyol. To them, these two fixtures are just like the other dates on the calendar... except they don't have to leave town. Espanyol, meanwhile, are in no danger of challenging for trophies. For them, a win over Barcelona is much more meaningful. It's a sign of success and progress, but more than that, it's a way of hitting back at the elitism and outdated prejudices of some Blaugrana supporters.

          The Plan

As I said earlier, Espanyol aren't making waves and fighting for silverware, but that is about to change. I've taken over at Cornella El Prat with the sole intention of dethroning the big two: Barcelona and Real Madrid. Winning the league is a faraway dream for now, so the first order of business is to get rid of the excessive deadwood polluting our wage bill before bringing in a new set of players over the next four or five transfer windows.

          • Default squads dated 29 August 2014

          • First transfer window disabled

          • Thievy Bifouma recalled from loan at Almeria

          The Way Forward

We will line up in a 4-4-2 diamond with four central midfielders in order to control the most crucial part of the pitch: midfield. Because both players in our midfield double pivot have M/M work rates, we will need to build play at a slow to moderate pace so that they can keep up. Caicedo will play as our target man, while Montañés has a free role that allows him to make use of his pace and ball skills. The goal is nothing more than survival in mid-table. We want to head into the winter break at least 10 points clear of relegation. I would eventually like to move to a 4-3-3 with a CAM in the hole behind the striker, though I don't mind sticking with our midfield diamond if the system turns out successful. Regardless, the first thing that needs to be shored up is our defence. We need to bring in a pair of full backs, and after Colotto does the job this season, we have Álvaro ready and waiting to take over in the summer. Another must-buy is a defensive midfielder, as Arbilla is a natural right back with not-so-excellent ratings for vision and passing. Other buys will depend on which tactic we choose to employ next season, but one player I am keen to bring in is Yassine Chikhaoui, the Tunisian forward from Zurich. He's blessed with pace, athleticism, strength, vision, range of passing, ball control and finishing. I see him as the complete forward even if he doesn't have the trait, so I'll find a place for him in the team any which way.

And in my search for a new team that ticks all the boxes, I realised that something needs to be said.

You guys know I read and respect each of your careers, but there's something about Moose @ West Ham that seems just perfect. The squad is decent from the start, there's a good bit of money to shore up positions that might not have as much depth, the kits are amazing, the stadium is authentic, it's located in a big city, and the fans are intensely passionate. On top of that, it's the club Moose supports.

Now there's no way I can do a career with Chelsea because I find absolutely no fun in buying up top-tier players from the start, and I'm trying to break out of my habit of managing in England. Truth is I've wanted to do a West Ham career for some time but have kept away from it, partly out of respect to Moose but also because I don't want to repeat such a long-standing team. I now find myself unable to pick a team.

Italy is almost out of the question because of the second division's lack of licensing. In fact, I might not even consider a Serie A career until FIFA sorts its sh*t with regard to Italian league licensing. Spain also doesn't sit well with me because... well, it's Spain. No other reason, really. Netherlands, Portugal and Turkey would all be fun if there were at least a second division, but I CBA to play ALL the same teams EVERY year. France is sort of okay, but I've been trying to stick to a one-cup league.

That leaves Germany as the main option, with England as a fallback in case I can't get over the obsession with my homeland. Werder Bremen would be quite good if they only had a bigger budget. Hoffenheim seem to tick most of the boxes, but they're packed with TOO MUCH talent. There's no fun in that extreme, either. I know... I'm a picky motherf*cker.

I guess what I'm looking for now is either a three- to four-star team in Germany/France with £8-12 million in initial transfer budget, or any team in any major league with decent kits and one or more players who can be sold for big cash (about £20-25 million total). So far, I've come up with Espanyol (Casilla, Moreno, Bifouma), Hamburg (Adler, VDV, Rudnevs), Cagliari (Sau, Ibarbo, Adrian), and Torino (Cerci, Glik, Maksimovic).

If anyone else can think of suggestions of teams or ways to bring in a big but amount of money in one shot (without FT), I would love to hear them. Please remember I'm using the 29 August 2014 squads on SoFIFA. I'd really like to avoid managing in England again, but if I must, I have a couple of ideas lined up.
Hey, this is a career mode thread for everyone, and just because I play my career with my favorite club really doesn't affect how I feel about any one else using them. If you want to play as West Ham, go for it! It sounds like you'd be doing a bit of a squad shake up anyways, so it's not like we'd just be running the same career with the same players and everything. That's what's great about FIFA/football careers is that there are so many players and directions you could go. Same to to you Jamie!

That said, if you were looking to go elsewhere, Hamburg is a great choice like you said because they have a decent side and some awesome kits. Hoffenheim is another choice because you could offload Firmino to a Barcelona/Real/bigger club for a ton of money right off the bat.

Deportivo La Coruña Player of the Month

                  Raul De Tomas

Raul De Tomas was in outstanding goal scoring form this month. He ran away as the favorite for the player of the month award after knocking in a jaw dropping 7 goals this month. His performances were highlighted with his 40 yard screamer from a free kick against Espanyol.

                  Manager Comments

Goals, Goals, Goals! - With De Tomas leading the scoring, we couldn't seem to be stopped. Our attack is in top form, and while the defense did suffer some, they are still putting in solid performances. The squad is really starting to come together overall.

Europa League - We won the crucial match against Everton and then went on to beat Austria Wien to advance to the knockout stages in the Europa League. This is an exciting time for us to continue competing against top European clubs. We will be facing Zenit first in a 2 leg battle to advance.

Copa Del Rey - After winning the first leg 4-0 we played a team of almost completely youth products in the second leg to give them some match experience. We advanced 5-2 on aggregate into the round of 16. We were the unlucky team in the draw, and we will be facing Real Madrid next. We would have preferred to stay away from them until later in the competition, but we still believe we can go out there and give ourselves a chance to advance.

Post 2 - First steps to glory (August 2014)

                    Games

First game of the month, like I said, was a Capital One Cup game against Cardiff. I was in the starting lineup, no idea how. I figured that with so little playing time in the pre-season, I won't get any minutes, but apperantly, the coach has faith in me.

So, as you can see from the picture, we took the lead early, as my pass through the defenders legs went to Austin, who smashed it in. An absolute beauty. We were not ahead for long, as Maynard tied it up with a pretty similar strike from outside the box.

The game was pretty stale and went on to extra time. I got subbed off in 101' minute, and to my surprise, as I simmed the game, we had actually lost the game 4-1. I have no idea how things went that bad, but they did. Out of the cup so early.

Second game against Blackburn, and I was back in it. This game was actually intense. Blackburn was pressuring us for the first twenty minutes, and I felt like we were going to concide soon. Yet then, we somehow got on a counter and got the ball to create our own moves. We didn't score instantly, as we had a few corners and a few good chances.

Yet then, as Antenucci fired it to goal, it was first saved by the keeper, yet I was the first to the rebound and I put it in! A really ugly goal, as my shot even bounced off the defender, yet I will take any goal to boost my ratings.

I did get subbed off with 30 minutes to play, yet the game finished 1-0.

Our next game was against Fulham, and your boy was still in the starting lineup. This game, I don't know how, and I don't know why, but we were all over them. Fulham looked bad on the ball, so our movements were creating chances.

And there I was again, a good pass, I got past the defender, dropped him in the box and slammed it into the bottom corner. I wasn't done there. Second half, we earned a free-kick. I haven't been winning headers to be fair, yet this time, I lept like a salmon and put in my second.

I got to play to the final minutes of the game and it ended 2-0, absolutely fantastic start for me and Leeds.

Last game of the month against Derby County. This game was the hardest, as we got lucky a few times. Bent missed a penalty and his initial goal got called offside, so somehow, the football gods were favoring us today.

Then, about 85' minutes played, some good passing play had me in the box. I turned around and passed it to Kulovits, a new transfer of ours, who then proceeded to put it right in the bottom corner. Another victory, it came very late, yet it was still a good win.

                    Goals

So, a pretty good month, and we took a few steps towards our goals. As you guys suggested, I added a few here (yes, even yours Chico). If you can name any more, then suggest em, but this time, let them be really unique. Otherwise we are just pileing up on these.

                    Spoiler

                    Customizing the player

So, Keano was right! We actually won 3 games this month, therefore, you have the chance to actually change something!

                    List is down below!

Now, new question: new month has us playing against Reading, Brentford, Huddersfield, Watford and Blackpool. How many assists will I get?

                    Spoiler

                    Summary

Second month and it went pretty well, to be fair. Hopefully we can carry on in this form and complete one of our first goals next month!

I hope you enjoyed the post, take care!

                      - £10.000

                      Transfers

                      IN

Samed Yesil, ST, 63 Ovr, 20 Years Old, Germany
                      Loan from Liverpool

The German-Turkish striker arrived at the star of the window as one of the first arrivals of Keano's new reign. Liverppol agreed to send him on loan for the season much to the delight of Keano as he clearly rates the 20 year old highly. He is obviously a prolific goalscorer and as of March 2013 has netted 31 times in 33 appearances with German Underage sides.

André Moreira, GK, 64 Ovr, 18 Years Old, Portugal
                      Loan from Moreirense FC

The second loan signing of the window was Portuguese goalkeeper André Moreira from Moreirense. The 18 year old was on loan from Atlético Madrid and as of November 2014 has been capped 6 times for the U19 and U20 national sides.

Gael Bigirimana, CM, 63 Ovr, 20 Years Old, England
                      £5.000 from Newcastle

(Don't ask me how I got him for £5k!!) The Burrundi born midfielder came up through the Coventry City academy and broke into the first team in 2011 where he made 26 appearances. His performances earned him a move to Newcastle. He has made 2 appearances for the England U20's and has been brought in for his passing ability but also his ability to win the ball back.

Tyias Browning, CB, 61 Ovr, 20 Years Old, England
                      £100.000 from Everton

Browning was brought in for some quality and youth at the back. He can play at CB and also at RB which is handy to have. The Everton youth product has been capped by England at U17, U19 and U21 levels.

Jordan Rossiter, CM, 60 Ovr, 17 Years Old, England
                      Loan from Liverpool

The second loan signing from Liverpool was 17 year old central midfielder Jordan Rossiter. The lad has been a part of Liverpool since he was 6 years old and has been compared to the great Steven Gerrard. He made his Liverpool U18's debut when he was only 15 and then went on to make his U19 debut still aged 15. At 16 he was a permanent figure in Liverpool's U21 side and he has captained England's U16's while also appearing for the U17's and U18's. The quality passer and tough tackler clearly has a bright future ahead of him.

Edemir Rodríguez, RB, 60 Ovr, 27 Years Old, Bolivia
                      Free Agent

The Bolivian free agent was brought in for depth on the right hand side of the defence. He has been capped 11 times by the Bolivian national side and can also play on the left flank if needed.

                      Yesil 90' (Hollands)

                      MotM: James Dunne

I decided to go with a 4-4-2 Holding with debutantes including Yesil, (who marked it with a goal) Bigirimana (who although didn't get a great rating I was impressed with as he got on the ball but was also good at winning it back which is what we need) and Moreira in goal. James Dunne had a really good game in central midfield grabbing an assist for an outstanding pass around the back for Wallace. Yesil showed good enthusiasm and wasn't afraid to shoot. He also showed a finishing touch dinking the ball over the keeper for the winner.

                      MotM: Danny Hollands

This game saw some more players being tried out with Westcarr impressing along with Storey up front. Westcarr unfortunately broke his elbow during the game after scoring. Storey took a shot and the rebound was headed in by Westcarr who used his strength to hold off the defender. Mokulu got the equalizer turning, after receiving the ball with his back to goal, and firing into the net past Moreira. Tyias Browning also got his first start alongside Palace loanee Wynter in defence.

                      Pozo 42'

                      MotM: Danny Hollands

We dominated the early parts of the game going 1-0 up thanks to Hollands picking Fogden out on the right after the left back fell asleep. Chorley left Rodríguez get past him and into the box where Brezovan had no chance of stopping it. The same duo combined for our second goal with Fogden crossing for Hollands to head home. Some poor defending by Shorey on the left allowed the ball to be played across into the run of Pozo, who nobody picked up, for him to slot home the equalizer 3 minutes before halftime. The second half was dull with Atangana probably coming the closest with his swerving shot.

                      Portsmouth Player of Preseason

Danny Hollands - CM, 62 Ovr, 28, England

The midfielder was the best player in the team during preseason appearing in all 3 games and was named MOTM in 2 of them while scoring once and setting up a further 2.

                      30/8 York City (h)

Well as you can see it's a very packed calendar! 2 days rest between a game then 3 days between the next. It's going to be tough on the squad but I think that we can progress in both cups and get at least 11 points out of 15 in league play. Although I'll be aiming for 12/13.

Hope you enjoyed the beginning of hopefully a long and successful career like Chico's Wimbledon or Rabbit's Dagenham ones! Thanks for reading!

I predict that you'll get 3 assists next month.

Jamie: Nice pickup in Musacchio, how's he doing so far? Good job getting past Spurs fairly comfortably and into the League cup final. A derby win then hammerings of West Ham and Palace before a good draw with an away goal against Zenit. With you only being 2 points behind City and playing them next month and with a lot of big games next month is crucial to your season, good luck!

Simp: Nice signings! Kapino could grow into a superstar with game time and Uchida is a solid RB. Stocker has been really consistent for you these past few months and was again this month. The 2-2 draw was a good result against Wolfsburg but not against Dusseldorf. You are still 4 points ahead though and it's surprising to see Bayern so far back. Good luck against them and Napoli next month.

Chico: Gomez looks like a good bargain on the pre-contract a Davila a real versatile addition up front. I actually looked at him for Zaragoza but couldn't afford him. The games were fairly rough with only 2 wins against Valladolid and Villarreal. Sucks to get knocked out of the Copa Del Rey although Sevilla aren't a bad team. I hope that this form doesn't continue into next month especially with your match against Ajax.

Tex: D.A.M.M Your attack was on fire, De Tomas especially. 7 goals scored in one game and a few 5 and 4's! Amazingly good form. What a stunner of a free kick from De Tomas as well! Congrats on getting through the group stages and also getting up to 3rd with a real chance of getting into 2nd! Keep it up!
