'17-'18 Summer Transfer Window Update

It's my first season in Europe and I'm both excited and nervous. Luckily the expectations aren't too high since the board is only expecting a mid-table finish for this season. I've scouted the Süper Lig and other than less than a handful of teams every one is pretty even. The top 5 teams qualify for European competition with the top 2 teams going to Champions' and 3 through 5 going to Europe. I'm being given $8.5 million in transfer budget and $30K in wages which isn't really much but I'll try to make the best of it. The roster has some holes and isn't built for the 4-4-2 diamond wide I like to run so I'll have to make some adjustments of my own and play in a 4-2-3-1.

Transfer Window Recap

Undoubtedly the talent level in the Süper Lig is much higher than in Mexico or Australia, so even thought I was working with more money than I've ever had in this career when you put it in perspective it wasn't a whole lot. Understanding I was going to have to adapt to a 4-2-3-1 there were still significant holes in this roster especially at fullback so I was able to take care of that somewhat. Next I had to find an upgrade at the striker position since I couldn't to into a one-striker formation with someone in the mid-60's, so I went and got my usual acquisition of a Venezuela by bringing Rivas who was playing close by in Saudi Arabia and is sort of a poor man's Salomon Rondon. From there I focused on what I really wanted to do, which Keano already called out, and tried by best to acquire Victor Alonso from Dorados (Mexican CB that came through the academy during my time there). His price tag was $7 million and I offered $4 million to no avail. $5 million didn't get a bite either. I then threw Ömer Bayram into the deal straight up but Dorados wanted $4 million on top of it. I countered with $2 million and they ended negotiations saying I kept showing I wouldn't meet their demands. That was tough to go through because I really wanted to bring him in, just couldn't justify acquiring him until I solved other issues first. I'll try again in the winter.

FEBRUARY

We beat Chelsea 2-0 at their place thanks to Rodwell and Buckley, opening up a two-point gap at the top of the table and giving our title hopes a bit of a boost. But the trip to Milan humbled us. Carlos Bacca scored a brace and set up two more as we succumbed to a 4-0 loss, sending us out of the Europa League. We ended the month with a 1-1 draw at home to Everton.

Two wins and a draw kept our title hopes alive. Rodriguez and Van Aanholt combined to save a point at Manchester City, and Sneijder and Van Aanholt put us back to winning form against Aston Villa. Buckley and Afobe helped us sink the Magpie b*st*rds. Despite being level on points with Chelsea (ahead on goal difference), we still have a shot at some big silverware.

Oh my. That loss to United damaged our chances quite a bit. They've been on a surge recently, and the result now puts them two points ahead of us at the top of the table. Gerrard managed to score early, but Wayne Rooney and Antonio Valencia brought them back to parity and won it in injury time. At Southampton, Mavrias came on to score a late equaliser that kept us at least close to the summit. And against West Ham, Defoe again trumped his former team with one goal and two assists, for Rodriguez and Gerrard.

Those two losses put us in a very bad position. From being masters of our own destiny, we're on the verge of finishing third in the Premier League. SEASON RECAP

Chelsea retained their title, Diego Costa bagging 17 goals to win the Golden Boot and Thibaut Courtois maxing out at 17 clean sheets. We managed to crumble at the end of a highly challenging season, but a historic place in the club's first Champions League campaign awaits. We've learned from our shortfall in both domestic and international competition. The experience will serve us well in a season that will be packed with new moments. And now it's obvious I need to tear apart what's been built (to a certain extent) and bring in some new face. Might be just 3-4 additions. Might be as many as 6-8. Let's see.

After a tricky start and then start to pick some form up. I was worried how we would go into this month. We started of with a trip to Preston. Both teams started slow, Preston had a good couple of chances, hitting the bar and forcing a save out of Button. We were the one to take the lead though. After applying some pressure we had a corner and their keeper came and missed. This left Bjelland with a free header to make it 0-1. A bad start to the second half and Preston levelled. It came from a counter attack. Adam Reach down the left and Daniel Johnson had a free header in the middle, nothing we could have done about that. That's how the game finished, probably the right result.

How we didn't win this game or force it to extra time, I will never know! Stoke got out of jail many times. They scored first after a weird cross found a Stoke man, our defence was all over the place. Walters was found and it's 1-0. We responded pretty well. Swift was on the left, he cut inside and got it past Butland. The next bit is just quite unbelievable. A Stoke player had a shot from miles out, it hit a defender and just bounced right in front of Walters who made no mistake. In the second half we battered Stoke. We just didn't have that quality at the right times. Our cup run is over.

Our form has dropped again and we knew we had to come into this game to win. We started off really well, creating a few chances, but it is the simple mistakes that our costing us. Forest got forward down the left and Bidwell is no where to be seen. This means a defender gets brought out of position and they crossed it in, free header and it's 0-1. Bidwell did respond well, we had a corner and Gogia picked up the ball. Lovely feet outside the box, found Bidwell who smashed it in for 1-1. Another bad start to the second half. Forest got a huge slice of luck. They shot from outside the box, Button made a good save, but he has put it straight into the path of Burke who won't have a easier finish. We didn't create much after and unfortunately lost the game.

Player of the month

Goes to... Alan Judge! I couldn't decide between him and Cook. I went for Judge because of his link up play with others and he gives 100% every game, Cook needs to be more consistent!

Thoughts: Again, disappointing end to the month. We start off well and end it badly. We take one step forward and then two back! In my opinion we just need to find consistency and we will be fine. Thank you!

My Thoughts

Transfers - Many offers were received for several of our players, mainly Ander Iturraspe, Markel Susaeta and Beñat, but our high price demands weren't matched by a single club. That isn't necessarily a bad thing as the team has been doing a good job, though.

As far as signings go, the only player we went for was Asier Villalibre and we got him for two million from our reserve team. The 18-year-old is very young and he has a good potential. Furthermore, a good and young second striker is something we have been looking for since the summer as Borja Viguera is becoming unhappy and getting older. Villalibre showed his quality by scoring two goals in his debut against Eibar.

Form - Our good form continued with two wins and a draw in the league and with two progressions in the Copa del Rey, including a huge quarter final win against Real Madrid, and speaking of huge, we managed to tie with the reigning Champions League champions FC Barcelona. Back to the Copa del Rey, we will face Granada CF in the semi finals of the cup and I'm confident about our chances to reach the final.

Players - Raul Garcia is still out injured for a couple of weeks more and that is the reason why Markel Susaeta is starting as the CAM. Mikel San Jose is starting over Ander Iturraspe because he has played better than the latter. Aduriz is still going strong in attack and he has actually gained a point in acceleration and sprint speed, respectively. Iker Muniain has been average while Iñaki Williams is starting to become a big attacking threat.

The youngsters of the team are performing well, too. Ager Aketxe and Ruiz de Galarreta are getting a good amount of playing time and both of them tend to get involved in goals. The two also have great work ethics. The left back Iñigo Lekue has been alright-ish the few times he has played while, as stated earlier, Asier Villalibre has done a good job in the few games he has appeared in.

Next month - February is a real nightmare of a month with a horrendous schedule. We have nine games with four of them being shoved into the time span of one week, only a day separating each game from the next one. They aren't easy games, either, as we face Real Sociedad, Sevilla, Club Brugge (Europa League, second leg) and Valencia. It will certainly be interesting to see how well we manage with this inhumane schedule. Additionally, we will play against second-placed Real Madrid and sixth-placed Villarreal.

National team - Like you probably remember, I took an international management offer in December and now I'm managing the Bulgarian national team who managed to qualify for the Euro 2016. My first two games with Bulgaria will be two friendlies in March and I'm certainly looking forward to seeing how the team performs before the Euros!

My Thoughts

First of all, I apologise for not posting anything in a long time. I have been busy with school and life and I haven't had that much time to play FIFA. I will make sure to leave all of you feedback over the weekend!

Form - February started poorly with two losses but we really picked our form from there, winning the majority of games with the likes of Valencia, Sevilla, Arsenal and Zenit losing to us. In most games our attack has been very good, but in contrast, in other games we have failed to create many chances. For example, we only managed to get two shots off in the recent 0-0 draw against Levante. I am very happy with our performances, though, especially in the Europa League where we have defeated every single opposition. I really think that we can beat Lazio in the final and lift the Europa League trophy. I also believe in our chances to beat Barcelona in the Copa del Rey final but it won't be easy at all.

Players - Aritz Aduriz has lost his spot as the top scorer of the league after scoring only one goal in April. I don't know why he isn't scoring as much any more, it's probably just one of those dry spells many strikers tend to have. Luckily our back-up striker Asier Villalibre has really stepped up as he has scored a marvellous 14 goals in 21 appearances, only at the age of 18. Other players who have been doing very well are Iñaki Williams, Markel Susaeta, Aymeric Laporte and Mikel San Jose.

As a whole the team has been playing well but there is one player who I'm very unhappy with and he is Iker Muniain. The gem of the team has performed very badly throughout the entire season and he has barely contributed to our attack with his two goals and four assists in 40 appearances. Furthermore, Muniain is asking for a 50% pay rise which I simply won't grant him after poor performances. This has lead to him being send to the reserves.

Bulgaria - I played my first two games with Bulgaria and while the team is quite poor we managed to perform quite well. The defence is easily the worst part of the team and I will see what I can do in order to achieve success in the Euros in the summer. It won't be easy at all.

Newcastle’s first European appearance since losing to Benfica in the Quarterfinals of the 2013 Europa League. Niang made his first start for us and scored a goal which took quite some skill. He cut in from the right Shot to the far side.

We really don't deserve to go through in this competition but Krul kept us in it and we were able to get the win. Niang was able to equalize in the dieing seconds after a cross went over the keepers head and Niang just tapped it in. Armstrong came on for his first match this season and scored a goal. He received the ball with his back to goal and was able to turn then shoot and score the winner near the beginning of extra time.

We went down early when the right wing crossed in and Grunwald finished first time. Townsend converted from the spot after being pulled down just inside the box when he tried to cut in. Still undefeated! All wins were only by one which is a little disappointing and I wish we could be scoring more goals. Some of the games were to close so hopefully next month we do that and continue to get wins.

Yanks - You were quite active in the transfer window and I really like your signings, especially the ones of Dier and Niang! Both of them are young and talented with good potentials and the latter one has scored a couple of important goals like that unbelievable rabona! I'm glad that Correa has been doing very well in attack for you, too. Scoring seemed to be a bit of an issue in September but I believe you will work it out. By the way, how has Brooks been for you?

MM5 - You really haven't gotten off to a good start with Brentford, only getting two wins and getting eliminated from the cup but I really hope you manage to turn the season around. Good luck!

Indi - You had an amazing season with Sunderland, almost even winning the Premier League! To be honest, I am glad that you didn't win it yet since it will motivate you to push harder next season and it will also keep the career going on for a season or so longer. Finishing as the runner-up is incredible, though. I love what you did with Gerrard in 'the Good' section

Rabbit - Kayseri: The squad is looking alright after the transfer window and judging by how you turned Dorados into a title challenging team in no team I can see you playing in the Europa League next season! You seem to be lacking good depth, though, and I'm a bit concerned about the quality of your attack of defence. Also, you made an interesting decision to keep only one goalkeeper in the team. I'm really looking forward to your time in Turkey; good luck!

Newport: Wow, you sold both Gardner and Byrne after they were top players for you? Must've been a tough decision, although Gardner complaining about his wage really didn't help his situation. You got a great replacement for him in Rohan Ince, especially since everyone here loves him. The squad is easily Championship quality and I will be very surprised if you don't get promoted. So far the beginning of the season has been a good one and Thuram has adapted quickly to the new team.

Some striker suggestions from me after a quick sofifa search (with latest squads so some of these might be missing in your career) are Adam Armstrong, Tyler Roberts, Dimitri Oberlin, Tammy Abraham, Luka Zahovic, Taiwo Awoniyi, Sardar Azmoun, Bradford Jamieson IV, Chuba Akpom, James Wilson, Rushian Hepburn-Murphy, Che Adams, Rey Manaj and Giovanni Simeone. Some of them are British but as a whole they are from all over the world.

Cabee - So many transfers! Pretty much every single on of those players look exciting but Dybala and Mitrovic are the stand-out signings for me! And then there is good old Kwabena Appiah! I'm glad that he scored quite a few goals in February, it just shows how good he still is. By theway, how do all the full backs slot into the squad?

Your performances in February were just amazing! There was that one disappointing loss against Chelsea (of course) but then you went to net twelve goals in three games! Very important away win against Bayern, too. You can really challenge for the double this season!

Keano - I'm glad that you are finally starting to turn the season around with two great wins against the Manchester sides! You are also still going strong in the Europa League although that Utrecht loss could result in a tough opponent next round. Hopefully you can beat Genoa! Also, the last three matches of December look very bad with that horrendous schedule.

Moose - What a great performance against Everton! Lacazette really showed his class in that game. Rabbit had a similar question to mine: are you worried about Dybala doing poorly in his new role, especially after banging in lots of goals earlier?

Sportsy - Oh no, that is just horrendous! I really wish you all the best and hopefully you are able to get life back together fast! Just remember not to give up and that the night is darkest just before the dawn. I'm certain that things will be fine soon. Again, all the best wishes!

Manager's Thoughts
After getting past Real Madrid in the Quarterfinals of the Copa del Rey, everyone in Spain thought our fairy-tale story would come to an end against FC Barcelona in the Semifinals, but they were wrong. After a hard-fought 1-1 draw at the Camp Nou, we stunned the world power with a 1-0 victory in the Balearic Islands to punch our ticket to the Final in April against Sevilla FC. In league play, goals were at a minimum, but our squad still pushed out a 3-1-0 record, including a very important victory over UD Almería. Another positive sign is that André Silva looks to be finding form as the 20-year-old striker who is on loan from FC Porto had 3 goals in February.

March is a light month for us, but our trip to Basque Country should be interesting as our first meeting with Bilbao Athletic resulted in a thrilling 4-3 win for us that saw our side climb back from down 3-1 to get a 90th minute winner from Fofo. There's not much else to say about the Liga Adelante schedule when we have a 24-point cushion at the top. Promotion should be officially sealed very soon.

I'm glad you like the signings! Dier and Niang have both been good but Niang is already complaining about a lack of playing time despite playing almost every game which is annoying. Scoring has been an issue and I really hope we can correct that, we have been making chances just not putting them in the net. Brooks has been great in back, almost always wins the ball on the ground or in the air and if an opponent does pass him he is fast enough to catch up to all but the fastest forwards. He has been a solid player in the back overall, I can elaborate if there is anything specific you want to know though.

I haven't told you this yet but the resemblance between my arrival at Dorados and my arrival here at is disturbing. Kayserispor did not have a very good season in 2016-2017, finishing ... well, look:

If you don't want to click the spoiler or don't know how to, let's recap: 34 games played, 3 wins, 14 draws, 17 losses, 36 goals for (BARELY over a goal/game) and 61 goals against for a GD of -25, their 23 points only one better than last place. It's no wonder they were looking for a new HC and I may the perfect match for the job since I was able to turn Dorados around pretty quickly, could I repeat my success here in turkey? If you notice, Beşiktaş ran away with the league title last season while 2 through 4 also separated themselves from the pack, but that 5th place (which still qualifies your for Europe League) was up for grabs and that's my goal for the season: Earn a Top-5 finish.

First pre-season. We accepted an invitation to the European International Cup (EIC) in Norway for the top prize of $4.1 million which would be welcomed for our transfer budget. We were drawn into Group A with PEC Zwolle, Djurgårdens IF, and Molde FK, with Group B consisting of Odds BK, Rotherham Utd, Sarpsborg 08 FF, and Śląsk Wrocław.

We came into this big match-up in very good form and we were able to ride that the full 90 minutes, scoring on two very nicely constructed plays and frustrating a lineup feature Lukas Podolski, Wesley Sneijder, and Bruma to the tune of just two shows, neither one on target.

Review: I could not have predicted this much success, even if the sample is very short. I'm also experiencing the opposite I expected after switching to a different formation, which is a lot of comfort and ease playing within it. I'm still not crazy about 1 striker but it works and the added CDM I think is what has helped the defense a lot. I don't expect the remaining 31 games to so smoothly but at least this start makes me feel like that top-5 finish is possible. I'll have to figure out how to get some extra funds for the winter transfer window so a good first half would go a long way in getting the board to provide me with some additional transfer money.

In the meantime I'm getting the academy started by hiring two scouts: Dragen Ujevic (3-star EXP, 3-star JUD) from Croatia and Stefan Gersbeck from Germany. Dragon has been sent to his homeland for 3 months while Gersbeck has been asked to scout locally for the same period. I hope to have some additions to the academy for you in the next update.

The Spanish side Athletic Club, or Athletic Bilbao, have had a magnicifent season so far, qualifying for the finals of the Europa League and the Copa del Rey respectively. The team also finished second in La Liga, only a point behind FC Barcelona who won their second consecutive league title. Additionally, the two sides are playing against each other in the final of the Copa del Rey two weeks later.

In their history, Athletic Bilbao have never won the Europa League. The Basques have made it twice to the final, most recently in 2012, but they failed to win the competition both times. Their supporters and players will be hoping to finally bring the trophy to Bilbao after tonight's game against the Italian Lazio.

Athletic Club's road to the Europa League final in Basel saw them defeat some top European teams like Arsenal FC and Schalke 04. The Basque team managed to disarm their opponents in every game and are deservingly in the final after top notch performances. Their semi final match-up against Zenit St. Petersburg ended in a dominant 6-2 aggregate win.

Some of the star performers of Athletic have been the 35-year-old striker Aritz Aduriz, who won the Golden Boot of La Liga and who is the leading goalscorer of the Europa League, Aymeric Laporte, a young star defender, and Iñaki Williams, a gem of a winger. Furthermore, the Lions' teen striker Asier Villalibre has been in great form, netting six goals in the Europa League.

The game began with our kickoff and we decided to take a calm and conservative approach on the first half an hour of the game in order to take control of the game. We had a few chances in the first half but the Lazio keeper Marchetti saved them. Right before the half time whistle Felipe Anderson was played through on goal, though, and the quick winger shot the ball past Iraizoz in goal to put his team into the lead.

At the beginning of the second half I decided to do what any responsible manager would do when being a goal down in a final: put two youngsters on the pitch. The decision worked off, though, as these two youngsters, Ager Aketxe and Ruiz de Galarreta, combined well for de Galarreta to equalise the game from Aketxe's assist and like that we were back in the game. Unfortunately Lazio managed to get back into the lead with just a minute of regular time left with Alessandro Matri's rebound shot. Consequently, we went all out attacking and in the dying moments of stoppage time Aymeric Laporte equalised the game! We were back in it again and the game went on extra time.

Extra time went in similar fashion and both teams were creating some chances. Unfortunately ten minutes into it a penalty was called in Lazio's favour and Antonio Candreva managed to put the Italians into the lead from the spot despite Gorka Iraizoz diving the right way. The lead didn't last long, though, as Asier Villalibre equalised the game with a thunderbolt of a shot into the top left corner! We had gone down three times and we had come back every single time! Unfortunately there wasn't a fourth comeback after Matri's brace in the 117th minute. The referee blew the whistle and we had lost the Europa League final. Losing feels always bitter but on the bright side, we put on hell of a performance and Aritz Aduriz became the oldest top scorer of the competition.

Athletic Club - FC Barcelona

Athletic Club and FC Barcelona have faced each other four times this season: twice in the league and twice in the Supercopa España. Barcelona failed to beat Athletic in any of those games with two of them ending in draws and the other two ending in Bilbao wins. On the other hand, Barcelona just won La Liga while Athletic lost in the Europa League final which certainly affect the mentalities of the teams.

At least two goals have been scored in each game between these two teams this season and the Copa del Rey final is expected to continue the trend. Athletic have the La Liga and Europa League top scorer Aritz Aduriz in their team while Barcelona's Luis Suarez finished the league season with the third-highest amount of goals. The other two thirds of the MSN trio are also very dangerous players and Athletic will have to be careful in defence.

Some time ago, in the year 2002, there was a German football team called Bayer Leverkusen. The team was quite good end they ended up as the runners-up of the Bundesliga. The team also had a great Champions League campaign, getting into the final, but due to an amazing volley by Zinedine Zidane the team didn't win the Champions League, either, finishing the season as the runners-up in that competition, as well. Furthermore, the team played in the DFB Pokal final, and as you can probably guess they ended up losing that final, as well. That unlucky season earned Leverkusen the nickname Neverkusen because they finished as the runners-up in all three major competitions.

Why am I talking about Leverkusen? Well, there are a couple of similarities between their 2001/02 campaign and our 2015/16 season, especially when it comes to finishing the season as the runners-up in every competition.

To quickly recap the game, Iraizoz saved Suarez's penalty in the first ten minutes and Aritz Aduriz put us into the lead from the penalty spot in the 14th minute. Only ten minutes later Andres Iniesta equalised with a header and right before half time a back-pass was played to Sergio Busquets to score the winning goal. Nothing important happened in the second half and Barcelona defeated us in the Copa del Rey final for the second year in a row.

My Thoughts

I'm actually extremely happy that we didn't win the league as it would've felt wrong. My intentions aren't to win everything in two seasons and I'm glad that next season will see us challenging for my first major trophy at the club. Losing in the Copa del Rey and Europa League finals was a bit disappointing but I still think that the team performed well.

The transfer window is almost here! I'm not planning to make any big moves apart from signing a centre back to take Gurpegi's place in the starting eleven as the old man has been inconsistent and decreasing. My number one transfer target is Sociedad's Iñigo Martinez. As far as selling goes, Iker Muniain and some deadwood players might be on their way out. Muniain is still unhappy about his contract and I'm unhappy about his performances so selling him seems to be the best option.

The squad is still strong although some starters are starting to get older. I already mentioned that Gurpegi is getting a smaller role, but other players who will probably start to get less playing time are Raul Garcia, Beñat and Gorka Iraizoz. Aketxe and de Galarreta have been in very good form and they could push Garcia and Beñat out of the starting eleven while Iraizoz could be replaced by the future star Kepa Arrizabalaga in goal. I will give the youngsters a lot of playing time and if they perform well they will get more game time. Speaking of youngsters, the youth academy hasn't changed since the last update.
