For me, I just never really got into FIFA this year. Maybe I will in the summer. I still read everything though!

My exam week is currently going on, and I haven't had much time (or eagerness) to post updates after going through several pages of economics, maths, physics, etc.
However, I'll be done this week, so expect to see the winter transfer window of my Hertha career over the weekend.

              Newport County A.F.C.
              2021-2022 Roster Review

              * Academy Graduate.

              Starting XI

GK: Jasper Cillessen (86 OVR) - 46 apps, 12 CS: The 33-year old Dutchman regressed slightly from his first season in Newport although even with that he was still a top-5 keeper in the league (starting all 38 games) and one the club's top performers. More importantly for The Exiles, Cillessen is showing no signs of declining in his skill set and he should continue to be Newport County's starter next season. 8/10

RB: Yasir Al Shahrani (81 OVR) - 43 apps, 5 A: The 30-year old speedster from Saudi Arabia completed his third season at the club, once again performing admirably on both ends of the pitch. Al Shahrani is almost underrated at this point, an engine with deadly pace on the pitch who rarely needs to be subbed for. He should continue to be in the starting lineup for the foreseeable future. 8/10

LCB: Niklas Süle (85 OVR) - 43 apps, 2 G: It was an eventful first season in the BPL for the 26-year old towering German, who started the season in poor form but adapted well as the season went along to showcase why The Exiles paid €30 million for his services this past summer. His form picked up so much throughout the season, including both his goals in the last couple of months, that he was named to the league's Starting XI. Süle is locked in as a starter for the foreseeable future and if he can continue to perform like he did this season (or continue to improve) he'll turn out to be a bargain.8/10

LCB: Kurt Zouma (87 OVR) - 35 apps, 1 G: Injuries caused the 27-year old from France to play 14 games less this season. Nevertheless, he continued to be an excellent defender when healthy and had no problems moving to the left side of the defense after Süle's arrival. He undoubtedly remains a key member in the starting lineup going forward. 8/10

LB: Jordan Amavi (78 OVR) - 43 apps, 2 G, 5 A: The 28-year old from France built on what had been an excellent debut season in Newport to once again be included in the league's Starting XI as the best left-sided fullback in the league. Amavi continued to be very solid on the defensive end while increasing his offensive output on the other end of the pitch. 8.5/10

CDM: Paul Pogba (91 OVR) - 27 apps, 3 G, 4 A: The 29-year old from France was hampered by injuries multiple times this season, resulting in a significant decrease in his number of appearances for The Exiles. Pogba had been the team's MVP last season and one can't help but think that with him healthy most of the season Newport County would had been able to get over the hump to win the league title and perhaps finally get past the quarter finals of the UEL. At the very least Pogba continued to perform like the world-class player he is when healthy and he'll surely be looking to have a bounce back year next season. 7.5/10

RM: Jefferson Farfán (77 OVR) - 41 apps, 15 G, 14 A: There's only one word to describe the performance of the 37-year old skipper from Peru this season: LEGENDARY. After two seasons being indispensable for the club Farfán showed that he only continues to get better with age, becoming not just the team's MVP but the league's MVP. He walks away from the game having led the BPL in assists in all three seasons he played in it. In just three seasons in Newport Farfán managed to etch his name as Exiles' royalty, being ********* of what it takes to be a team captain. He'll be missed around Rodney Parade.
              9.5/10

LM: Raphaël Guerreiro (81 OVR) - 40 apps, 7 G, 8 A: The 28-year old from Portugal followed up an excellent first season with the club with an even better year this time around. Guerreiro improved his offensive and continued to showcase his defensive skills to solidify himself as an asset for The Exiles this season. He was one of the best performers in the UEL overall, logging in an 8.0 average game rating after 5 appearances 8/10

CAM: Clark Gordon (82 OVR)* - 43 apps, 11 G, 15 A: The 22-year old academy product from Scotland bounced back from an underwhelming season last year to put himself back in the good graces of Marccelino and the fanbase. In all honesty everyone in and around the club has always hoped the exciting prospect will live up to expectations and he showed this season he can do that. He has a bright future ahead of him. 8/10

RS: Kjetil Ringdal Støvland (80 OVR)* - 42 apps, 30 G, 9 A: Any other season Ringdal Støvland more than likely wins team MVP, maybe even league MVP with the kind of numbers he put up this season. RS established himself as a bonafide scorer in the PL and in Europe scoring (on average) in two of every three games. The Norwegian Tank showed why he has been considered an exciting prospect by blowing away the competition for the league's scoring title, increasing his scoring from last season by 12 goals (almost double the 14 he scored a season ago). His assists numbers went down a bit but nobody cares about that when a striker is scoring at such a torrid pace. The 21-year old can still get better, which has to be a scary thought for everyone on The Exiles' schedule next season and beyond now that he has finally signed a contract extension with the club. 9.5/10

LS: Breel Donald Embolo (85 OVR) - 44 apps, 18 G, 12 A: The 25-year old from Switzerland took a full year to settle in with his new team but by the second half of the season Embolo's form really kicked into high gear as he showed flashes of the amazing scorer he can be. He also displayed his play-making abilities by tallying up the most assists on the team behind Farfán and Gordon. RS next to a locked-in Embolo next season could bring a lot of nightmares to Exiles' opponents next season. 8.5/10

              Bench

GK: Hayato Matsuki (72 OVR)* - 12 apps, 4 CS: The 21-year old mammoth academy product from Japan finally got to spend a full season as the lone backup goalkeeper and performed well enough to prove his worth, providing a clean sheet in 33% of his appearances. At 6'7" Matsuki makes up for whatever skills he has yet to develop by occupying a lot of space and being agile enough to move his body around. 7/10

CB: Bondz Lapslie (75 OVR)* - 18 apps: The 22-year old academy product from England earn significant playing time with The Exiles for the first time in his career and proved that the great potential he had shown wasn't a fluke. Lapslie has worked hard to improve his game up to where it is at the moment and that has helped him lock up a starting gig with the B-squad. He'll be looking to become the team's third CB next season. 6.5/10

LB: Elmir Nabiullin (77 OVR) - 33 apps, 1G, 2 A: The 27-year old speedster from Russia continues to be an asset off the bench for The Exiles, once again being Marccelino's first choice at fullback to spell the starters. Nabiullin's form is consistent regardless of whether he's coming of the bench with the main squad or starting with the B-squad. So long as he continues to accept this role (and with that many appearances why wouldn't he?) he can be expected to remain a big part of the coach's plans next season. 7/10

CDM: Rohan Ince (78 OVR) - 31 apps, 3 G, 5 A: The 29-year old from England completed his second season as the team's main backup CDM and performed even better this time around, scoring and assisting more despite playing in a handful less games. Even with that, Ince had been listed for transfer in the winter and is likely to remain for sale this summer due to the presence of academy products at the position who are ready to take over a lot of his playing time. He'll be in the last year of his contract next season. 7.5/10

CDM: Doke Boëtius (76 OVR)* - 32 apps, 2 G, 3 A: Marccelino somehow managed to get the 20-year old academy product from The Netherlands this much playing time despite the great season Ince had. Boëtius has always been a prospect with great potential and his height and shiftiness make it almost impossible to keep him off the pitch for long. He's the prime candidate to take up a lot of playing time with an eventual departure by Ince. 7/10

LM: Ben Potter (77 OVR)* - 37 apps, 4 G, 5 A: The 22-year old academy product from England bounced back from an uneven performance last season to return to being a key member of the bench for The Exiles along with his consistent form with the B-squad. Potter clearly performs better when starting than when coming off the bench but he may have to settle for continuing to be in this role for now with the upcoming arrival of Xherdan Shaqiri this summer. 7/10

CAM: Daniele Martella (77 OVR)* - 25 apps, 7 G, 4 A: The 21-year old super prospect from The Exiles' academy may be starting to show what he's capable off. Martella showed enough improvement in the first half of the season to make Marccelino comfortable in selling Joe Allen and once the Italian kid was able to get more playing time as Gordon's backup and a starter with the B-squad he really took off, scoring most of his goals and providing most of his assists in the second half of the season. Martella continues to have potential to be special and Newport County has been doing a great job of developing him. He may be ready for north of 35 appearances next season. 7/10

LW: Bondz Moore (79 OVR)* - 35 apps, 4 G, 9 A: The 22 year-old academy product from England had a really good season off the bench for The Exiles, significantly improving as a facilitator after netting only one assist last season in 29 appearances. Moore was able to do that while scoring four times once again this season and his improved form was so good he even received a couple of call ups to the England NT. 7/10

ST: Nicolas Gersbeck (77 OVR) - 24 apps, 10 G, 3 A: The 24-year old from Germany continues to be The Exiles' top backup striker and he showed great form whether he was playing off the bench or starting for the B-squad. Gersbeck scored in every competition he played in this season (even in pre-season) but he scored the majority of his goals (7) in the UEL where he finished among the best in the competition. 7.5/10

ST: Aaron Leya Iseka (72 OVR) - 12 apps, 9 G, 2 A: The-24 year old from Belgium continues to be a scoring threat whenever his number is called yet it appears he won't be an Exile for much longer. Academy-product Liam Taylor improved greatly this season and is forcing his way into more playing time with Leya Iseka being the most likely to lose playing time but he made it nearly impossible to replace him this season.7/10

              The Academy
(listed by their ranking in it)

RB - Ohon Aduamah (64 OVR, 91-94 POT): This 15-year old from Cameroon has officially been tabbed as an elite prospect. A physically strong player, Aduamah displays excellent aggression (83) and strength (77) to go with the jumping (75) and stamina (75) of a play-time ready prospect. He also possesses the pace to play the position.

CAM - Matt Lampson (52 OVR, 81-87): 16-year old prospect from the United States whose pace (75acc/73spd) is his most notable asset. Lampson is a raw prospect and will need to work hard in the academy.

LM - Collin Taylor (59 OVR 78-84): 16-year old American prospect described as a playmaker. His most outstanding skill is his agility (75) which is noticeably better than any other skill he has at the moment.

CM - Dean McKay (51 OVR, 74-80): Now a 16-year old prospect from Northern Ireland identified as a playmaker. McKay is very raw but even with that he shows outstanding agility (73) which should come in handy for his position.

GK - Aaron Keegan (52 OVR, 73-79): Now a 16-year old American who projects as a backup at best for the club.
              * Recent addition
              _____________________________________

Jason Lavery (CAM, 56 OVR), Abraham Lamptey (CM, 55 OVR), and Ohon Ankrah (RB, 61 OVR) were promoted to the senior roster at their requests. Lavery and Ankrah are exciting prospects while Lamptey is showing great potential.
              _____________________________________

Final notes on some other notable players: for all the things Marccelino and his squad are getting right they are definitely failing to get David Fox (RM, 74 OVR) on the pitch more often. The academy product out of Scotland with great potential played in just one game this season and scored a goal. He's just 20 years old but the club needs to find ways to get him more playing time even if it's out on loan. Cristiano Dall'Oglio (CDM, 74 OVR) is the other defensive midfielder waiting on the sidelines for more playing time. The 22-year old academy product from Italy was able to log in 11 appearances this season but as someone with great potential he needs to see the pitch more often. Another academy product, Daniel Amaral (CDM, 68 OVR), is inching closer to requiring some real playing time as the 18-year old from Brazil with great potential was even able to sneak into a game this season off the bench. Super prospect Marcos Andrade (LW, 73 OVR) has officially moved past fan-favorite Jack Giles (RW, 73) on the picking order thanks in large part to his potential to be special. Giles will more than likely be transfer-listed once again in the upcoming transfer window. Willem Van Hout (RB, 72 OVR) made some noise in 9 appearances this season thanks to a couple of outstanding goals and an excellent work rate and he is forcing his way into more playing time.

                ARSENAL CROWNED PREMIER LEAGUE CHAMPIONS

Alexis' 29th Goal Opened the Scoring at The Emirates

LONDON – Arsenal claim their first Premier League Title since The Invincibles, from the 2003-2004 campaign—a season in which the Gunners went unblemished, losing not one league game. The record this season was not quite as impressive (27-6-5), but they are crowned champions nonetheless—in new boss Josh Hedges’ first year. Not only did they win the league, but they’ve got an FA Cup Final vs Manchester United next weekend, and also the UCL Final vs Real Madrid the following weekend.

The Gunners entered the season’s final day tied atop the table with Chelsea, only behind by 1 in goal differential. The schedule would have Arsenal hosting Everton (7th), while Chelsea would be away at The Hawthornes—with West Brom hoping to avoid relegation. A late first half goal from Salomón Rondón to level the game, put Chelsea back on the attack and Diego Costa would net the winner early in the 2nd half to give the Blues a 2-1 victory.

Meanwhile, back in North London at The Emirates, a 9th minute strike from Alexis Sanchez (his league high 29th goal), put the Gunners up 1-0. Needing to better the Chelsea score line by at least 1 goal, super sub Olivier Giroud would give them the goal they needed, and a 2-0 lead that they would not relinquish. When the dust had settled, Arsenal were crowned Premier League Champions.

                  2022 World Cup

My adventure into Venezuela's second appearance ever in a World Cup was greeted by getting drawn into Group A with THREE European nations: France, Portugal, and Russia.
                  Spoiler

                  Group Match 1
                  Venezuela - Portugal (1-2)
                  João Mário 17'
                  Silva 39'
                  Del Valle 90' (Rondón)

We flat out failed to execute our game plan which was to keep Portugal off the score sheet early on to withstand their expected heavy attack in hopes of being able to play a more evenly-matched game in the second half. Credit to our guys for fighting until the end and getting a goal back in the 90th minute. This game could had easily been a draw if not for Anthony Lopes who was ridiculous with 7 saves.

                  Group Match 2
                  Venezuela - France (3-2)
                  Umtiti 3'
                  Juanpi 49' (Signorelli)
                  Martínez 58' (Rondón)

                  Griezmann 80'
                  Varela 90' (Peñaranda)

Miguel Varela, who I signed into Twente's academy during my time there, came off the bench to score a BIG goal for us in the 90th minute to give us an improbable win over France and keep us alive in this WC. Varela was a last-minute addition to the squad once I noticed how much he improved over this past year after I promoted him to Twente's senior squad just before taking the Barca job. He took a sideways pass inside the box from Adalberto Peñaranda and swung it forward with his left foot to create room against the marking of Geoffrey Kondogbia before firing off a close-range left-footed shot that Alphonse Aréola had no chance against. A historical goal for the 19-year old with great potential.

                  <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/IMOHgH_8Muk" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

                  Group Match 3
                  Russia - Venezuela (3-4)
                  Cheryshev 3'
                  Ozdoev 16'
                  Juanpi 30' (Otero)
                  Rondón 53' (Juanpi)
                  García 63' (Martínez)

                  Kanunnikov 82'
                  González 86' (Varela)
                  Martínez 88'

Call us the CARDIAC VENEZUELANS!!! We went into this game tied for second place in the group with France but behind them in goal difference, meaning we had to win (maybe by a lot of goals) and hope that at day's end we would have more points than France or a better goal differential. But Russia, all but eliminated at this point, came out willing to lay it all on the line for the small chance they had to move on to the next round. It took all of our will not to let the 0-2 deficit bring us down but thankfully we were able to cut the deficit in the 30th minute and gain momentum from that. At halftime we found ouy Portugal was beating France 1-0 but that left the possibility of a draw or a France comeback too likely so we went out in the second half with the intent to win.

20 minutes into that second half we were already up 3-2 and feeling good about ourselves but Kanunnikov's goal in the 82nd minute left us with a lot of doubts: what was going between Portugal-France, what was the score? Our captain Dani Hernández did a great job of refocusing our guys for the final 10 minutes and in the 90th minute Varela was part of a big goal for us once again, this time assisting Alexander González for the game winning goal. When the game was over we saw the final score in the other game: Portugal 2, France 0. We had accomplished our first goal: moving on to the knockout stage!

                  Round of 16
                  Colombia - Venezuela (1-2)
                  Rondón 81' (Peñaranda)
                  Preciado 90+2'
                  Rondón 115' (Peñaranda)

Salomón Rondón had what was without a doubt the biggest game of his career in a Vinotinto jersey scoring two clutch goals, one to put us in the lead late in regulation and another one in extra time to give Venezuela the biggest win in their history (up to that point). Below is the highlight from his first goal:

                  <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/dMiatFYmVhw" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

                  Quarter Final
                  Brazil - Venezuela (1-0)
                  Fred 67'

Unfortunately our difficult run in the World Cup came to an end at this point as Brazil just proved too much for us to overcome. Our game plan was very similar to how we approached the game against Portugal but although we executed better in the end we just couldn't keep Brazil off the back of our net, plus it's very difficult to win games when one doesn't score. I had made a significant change to the lineup after the group stage, benching Dani Hernández for Rafael Romo in search for less goals against. Romo was the MVP in this game despite us losing as his 11 saves are the reason why we can claim to have made Brazil sweat this one out.

I walk away from Qatar proud of our guys and what we were able to accomplish in this tournament, improving on our performance in Russia in 2018. I think I've been able to take Venezuela as far its talent pool can go at this point in time, as if you look at that knockout stage we were already on murderer's row with dates against Germany and Spain if we had been able to move further in the WC and it's not like winning our group would had made it any easier as we we would had faced European powerhouses throughout.

                  Qatar 2022 Starting XI
                  GK - Alisson (Brazil)
                  RB - Daniel Carvajal (Spain)
                  CB - Marquinhos (Brazil)
                  CB - Daniele Rugani (Italy)
                  LB - Erik Durm (Germany)
                  CM - Sergi Roberto (Spain)
                  LM - Rafa (Portugal)
                  CAM - Mario Götze (Germany)
                  LW - Neymar (Brazil)
                  ST - Harry Kane (England)
                  ST - Diego Costa (Spain)

Sorry for the delay, but now that my exams are over and Hertha finished 6th in the league, it's time for...

We Try. We Fail. We Win.

                      January 2021

                      Transfers Out

                      Thomas Lang,
                      LM, 84 ovr, 19 y/o, €44,500,000 to Liverpool FC

Our young academy graduate possesses huge amounts of talent (potential to be special, to be precise), but he never managed to impress me and the other staff of Hertha BSC. Lang didn't get a lot of playing time, but those times he got onto the pitch, he was average. Liverpool came in and were willing to pay €45M for the German winger, and we hope that he doesn't score against us in our Champions League match-up against the English side.

                      Transfers In

                      Timon Wellenreuther

80 Ovr, Goalkeeper, 25 Years Old, Germany

                      Bosman Transfer

As you might remember, (and probably don't, since it has been several weeks between my updates), our starting goalkeeper Rune Jarstein has been steadily decreasing in his stats, and our second-choice keeper Thomas Kraft is not good enough to get regular playing time. That's why I wanted to sign a new keeper, and my go-to German goalie talent Wellenreuther was exactly what I wanted: young, ready to take the starting spot, and cheap. Wellenreuther will join our team in the summer after his contract with Schalke 04 runs out.

                      Julian Draxler

87 Ovr, Attacking Midfielder, 27 Years Old, Germany

                      Bosman Transfer

If I'm completely honest, I have no clue why I decided to go for Draxler. Then again, he is German, very talented, but also quite lazy, in real life, he is very highly rated, and he was available for free. The 27-year-old German midfielder will hopefully add a lot of skill and creativity to our attack, but his arrival on a contract expiry in the summer means that I will have to shuffle the squad around a bit. Breel Embolo could replace the underperforming Davie Selke and Felix Platte at the top of our attack, with Draxler on the left and Weiser on the right with Duda in the middle. Even if Drax doesn't work out for us, we can always sell him on for a hefty fee.

                      Serge Gnabry

81 Ovr, Right Midfielder, 25 Years Old, Germany

                      €22,000,000

Mitchell Weiser is out injured, Breel Embolo is injury-prone, Emre Mor has been playing poorly, Lang was sold, and our reserve wingers have been average at best. Those are the reasons why I decided to invest €20M in the talented German winger Serge Gnabry. His blistering pace and abilities on the ball make him a dangerous player, and I hope that he improves our attack with those qualities.

                      ***

                      Borussia Dortmund 1 - 2 Hertha BSC
                      Stark OG 68'
                      Gnabry 30', Duda 38'

What a debut for Serge Gnabry! The winger was thrown right into our starting eleven, and it took him half an hour to make an impact by putting us into the lead with a beautiful curling shot into the bottom right corner of the net. Eight minutes later Ondrej Duda doubled our lead, and despite Dortmund pulling one back, we managed to came away with the three points.

                      Bayer Leverkusen 1 - 1 Hertha BSC
                      Toprak 90'

                      Duda 71'

Gnabry is becoming a fan favourite as he added to his goal in the last match by picking up an assist against Bayer Leverkusen. We were a minute ago from the win, but Ömer Toprak shot a late cross into the net in stoppage time to rob us from two extra points.

Breel Embolo sprained his ankle and will be out for 4 weeks.

                      February 2021

                      Hertha BSC 2 - 0 FC Ingolstadt
                      Selke 49', Esswein 84'

Maximilian Mittelstädt sprained his knee and will miss 3 weeks of action.

                      Quarter Final
                      Hertha BSC 1 - 0 Hamburger SV
                      Selke 59'

After starting the season off very poorly, Davie Selke is finally beginning to pick some form up. The German striker netted his second in two matches to drag us into the semi finals in our campaign for a third straight DFB Pokal trophy. Next up: Bayer Leverkusen.

                      Borussia Mönchengladbach 0 - 1 Hertha BSC
                      Gnabry 79'

Serge Gnabry is becoming one of our key players and a real fan favourite. In our I-have-lost-count-how-manieth victory in a row over Gladbach, our winter signing scored the winning goal again. A solid shot into the bottom left corner of the net got us the three points in the ongoing title race between us and Dortmund. Also, Breel Embolo has returned from his injury.

                      Hertha BSC 1 - 0 1. FC Nürnberg
                      Darida 84' pen

                      Round of 16, 1st leg
                      Liverpool FC 0 - 0 Hertha BSC

My notes about this game are a single word: 'meh'. Pretty much nothing happened in this match and neither side had any real chances to score. Unfortunately we also failed to get a very important away goal.

                      TSG Hoffenheim 0 - 3 Hertha BSC
                      Platte 25', Demirbay 81', Schär OG 90'

It took us two months, but we finally dominated our opponents and the scoreline reflects that. Felix Platte got us the lead in the first half, ex-Hoffenheim Kerem Demirbay doubled the lead late into the game, and Hoffenheim's Fabian Schär blocked the ball into the net in stoppage time.

                      My Quick Thoughts

We've been in top notch form during this calendar year, and we have a fine lead over Dortmund. I still think we will win the league and the cup for the second year in a row. Champions League will be a bit harder, but with a bit of luck we can win the treble. Also, Serge Gnabry has been very good so far.

Now that I don't have any important business in school for the next couple of months, I should start posting a bit more often. However, I'll be travelling abroad for a month from mid-June to mid-July, and I won't be posting anything then. I will be keeping an eye on this thread, though, and hopefully it will be livelier than in the last few weeks. Long gone are the good ol' days when all of us and Chico were posting a dozen pages each day.

Again, sorry for taking ages to post this career.

Thank you for reading this post! I hope you have enjoyed it! Any feedback or suggestions will be appreciated!

                          2022 World Cup

Giovanni Marccelino headed into his second World Cup, this time at the helm of Wales who were drawn into Group A with France, Colombia, and Norway. For Marccelino this presented a chance to make up for a poor showing as the manager of Finland four years ago when the Finnish failed to make it past the group stage.

                          Group Match 1
                          Colombia - Wales (1-3)
                          Bradshaw 40' (Bale)
                          Allen 44'
                          Bale 57' (J. Williams)

                          Murillo 82'

Joe Allen, a former Exile, scored a screamer from outside the box just before the half to give Wales a commanding lead that they wouldn't relinquish against a Colombian squad that attacked throughout the game but couldn't find the back of the net until it was too late. Tom Bradshaw and Gareth Bale also scored and Wayne Hennessey turned in a Man of the Match performance with 8 saves for Wales to give Marccelino an opening-game win.

                          Group Match 2
                          Wales - Norway (1-2)
                          Henriksen 13'
                          Konradsen 36'
                          Bale 47' (J. Williams)

Norway stroke early and twice in the first half to make Wales play from behind the entire game, and the Nordic squad was able to slow down Wales' attack to hang on to three crucial points to keep themselves in the fight for qualifying to the next round. Kjetil Ringdal Støvland came off the bench for Norway and performed well but did not score.

                          Group Match 3
                          France - Wales (3-3)
                          Bale 26' (Bradshaw)
                          Pogba 34'
                          Kondogbia 45+3'
                          Ramsey 54' (Bradshaw)
                          Ramsey 83' (Davies)

                          Rabiot 90+2'
                          Bradshaw 20'
                          Schneiderlin 64'

Wales was able to take advantage of France's 10-man squad after the red card to Morgan Schneiderlin in the 64th minute, but they also failed to maintain that advantage until the very end, giving up a goal in the second minute of stoppage time towards the end of the game to only earn a point in this tightly-contested match. Luckily for Marccelino's side, Norway was unable to beat Colombia and Wales advanced to the knockout stage as second place in the group.

                          Round of 16
                          Netherlands - Wales (2-3)
                          Bradshaw 20' (Bale)
                          Hennessey 32' (OG)
                          Ramsey 44' (Allen)
                          Wijnaldum 72'
                          Bradshaw 89' (Bale)
Poole 76' (Dead leg quad, out for 6 days)

Gareth Bale was Netherlands' defensive focus all game long and while the Dutch succeeded in keeping the Welsh star off the back of the net he still managed to assist Tom Bradshaw twice, including in the 89th minute for the game-winning goal in a thrilling elimination match. Netherlands, fresh of a dominant group stage, were never able to grab a lead in this game despite creating a good number of scoring opportunities.

                          Quarter Final
                          Wales - Greece (3-0)
                          Bale 43' (Ramsey)
                          Wales 73' (G. Williams)
                          Bradshaw 81' (G. Williams)

Wales rode the hot streak they were on to beat up on a Greek squad that had gotten this far mostly on defensive prowess. Greece was unable to fend off a Bale who finally got loose and Bradshaw sealed the deal with a beautiful diving header off a George Williams' cross in the 81st minute, Williams' second assist on the night.

Bradshaw goes airborne on the crossing pass from George Williams

                          Semi Final
                          Wales - Denmark (2-0)
                          A. Williams 62' (Bale)
                          Huws 90' (Davies)

Hennessey collected 8 saves and an 8.7 game rating to earn Man of the Match honors for shutting down a Denmark offense that had carried the Danish up to this point. Denmark's defense had an excellent performance in this game as well but Ashley Williams beat everyone to the ball on a Bale corner kick in the 62nd minute to tilt the balance in favor or Marccelino's squad and with the Danish desperately looking for the equalizer late Ben Davies found Emyr Huws inside the box for the dagger.

                          Final
                          Spain - Wales (4-0)
                          Deulofeu 2'
                          Deulofeu 21'
                          Costa 61'
                          Isco 83'

Spain wrapped up one of the most dominant runs in World Cup history by beating up on Wales from the get-go. Spain, who did not give up a goal AT ALL in this WC, jumped up to a quick lead courtesy of Gerard Deulofeu who was simply a class above any defender that came on to his path. His two goals in the first 21 minutes pretty much put an end to this game due to Spain's dominant defense which held a pretty in-form Welsh attack to just three shots. It was a magnificent run for the Marccelino-led side but Wales simply couldn't match up with a Spanish side that was more talented and in even better form.

                          Qatar 2022 Starting XI
                          GK - Jesús (Spain)
                          RB - Daniel Carvajal (Spain)
                          CB - Yeray (Spain)
                          CB - Raúl Navas (Spain)
                          LB - Riza Durmisi (Denmark)
                          CDM - Lucas Torró (Spain)
                          CDM - Sergio Busquets (Spain)
                          LM - Koke (Spain)
                          CAM - Ross Barkley (England)
                          ST - Mario Balotelli (Italy)
                          ST - Gareth Bale (Wales)

Not surprisingly Spain dominated this lineup. Bale managed to sneak into the list in large part due to winning the golden boot. His 5 goals were matched by Koke and Denmark's Martin Braithwaite but his 4 assists gave him the edge as only Barkley (5) made more passes for a goal.

Ok I have two careers that I'm hoping to roll out intros on today - Palermo and Rubin Kazan.

                              U.S. Città di Palermo
                              Rosanero

                              Božović Appointed at Palermo
For a club that churns through managers at the whim of chairman Maurizio Zamparini, the next in line with the task of restoring Palermo is former Red Star Belgrade boss Miodrag
Božović. Božović led Red Star to the Serbian SuperLiga title in his first season in charge of the club after a lengthy spell as manager of various clubs in Russia. Now the Montenegrin's goal is not to win league titles, but bring stability to the Sicilian side who barely escaped another relegation to Serie B in the 2015-16 campaign. Like with all Palermo managers, Božović won't have much time to complete the near impossible demands from Zamparini, with the ever-looming axe hanging over his head already. Still, for as many lows as the Rosanero have experienced recently, this is the club that had players like Edinson Cavani, Javier Pastore, Josip Iličić, and Paulo Dybala in the not-distant past, so there is still an element of optimism for better times again.

                                MOTM: Burke

This was a great way to kick off the new season, especially after we failed to win the shield last year. Arsenal actually got the lead first after some nice passing led to Musa getting the ball up the middle and he fired his shot into the top left corner. We equalized in the second half when Burke cut the ball inside and then played the ball down the left to Boscagli running in and he slotted it past the keeper to the bottom right corner. We got the lead late with Harris playing Burke around the right and he finished his shot low to the far post. Then just 5 minutes later they reversed roles and Burke played Harris up the middle and he beat the keeper to the left side of the goal to secure the result for us.

                                MOTM: Spencer

Nothing but frustration after losing this. We got the lead in the second half after the referee pointed to the spot to award us a penalty. Spencer stepped up and tucked it away into the bottom left corner just past the reach of their diving keeper. We gave that away though late after one of their shots came back off the post and Yilmaz was there to follow it up and tap it into the open net to force extra time. It looked like it was set to go to penalties after extra time was almost played out, but Barrera conjured up some magic with a shot from a few yards outside the box into the top left corner to decide the match.

                                Grimsby Town 3 - 2 Swansea City
                                GRI - Boscagli 11', 80', Lukaku 19'
                                SWA - Wickham 41', Lewis 90'
                                MOTM: Boscagli

We did our work early in this one, but allowed them a couple of cheap goals that really made the game look closer than it was. Our first came after Burke tackled the ball away from a defender and it fell right to Boscagli in front of goal and all he had to do was turn and shoot to beat the keeper. Then not long after we hit them on a counter where Burke played Lukaku up the middle and he easily placed the ball around the keeper to the bottom left corner. Before the half was up though they pulled one back after our defenders let Wickham run past them to get on the end of a cross just before our keeper could punch it away. In the second half it was Boscagli once again that got on the scoresheet with a stunning free kick from the top left side of the box and he powered it into the top left corner. In the final seconds our defense completely fell asleep and allowed them to get a free shot on the back post that was saved but fell right to Lewis for the quick tap in.

                                ARS - Weigl 13'
                                MOTM: Weigl

We looked completely overrun today and Arsenal took a well deserved win. Their goal came early after Weigl played a great one-two and got the ball back on the left side of the goal and placed it inside the near post. They just suffocated us after that and really shut down our chances. We offered little fight and it was almost a relief when the ref blew the final whistle.

                                Grimsby Town 2 - 0 Manchester City
                                GRI - Boscagli 56', Burke 64'
                                MOTM: Delgado

We came out much better this time around and we were able to control the match for the majority of it. It took until the second half before we finally broke through and we took the lead after Delgado played Boscagli down the left and he finished it low to the bottom right corner. Then not long after Kamada was able to play Burke down the left with a great through ball and he fired his shot across the goal off the left post and in. We were able to shut it down after that and they never looked like much of a threat to make it interesting.
