Do you maybe improve more in categories you're training in? Since I can't sign a GK coach I've been assigning myself to the 3 GK categories in training. I've definitely noticed those going up a bit faster than the others. I also saw a big jump across the board when I won a manager of the month award.

I want to say yes that happens. But I'm not 100% sure. Sometimes it seems that way and some times not. I haven't been training as a GK coach, yet in my current journeyman I have 7's in all three GK attributes. Makes no sense. They are some of my highest stats. I only train tactics and attacking. The only stat higher than my GK ones is my attacking. I can't explain why my GK ones have gone up so much. I do have the single best Indian GK and he has 89 caps now. Wins every award and keeps lots of clean sheets. So I wonder if that affects my stat gain for that, even though I don't train it.

Not sure if this is the best place to ask this but I'm kind of interested in football manager. I really like Dynasty/Franchise modes of NCAA and Madden on managing different things. Finding the right player to fit my system. So football manager seems kind of up my alley, however I know absolutely nothing about soccer, I'm worried it has too steep of a learning curve. It just looks overwhelming. Any suggestions or guides?

There is a steep learning curve, no doubt. If you are a career mode/dynasty nerd like most of us on here are, Football Manager is the best experience you will find.

This is a great site with a TON of info on FM: http://www.guidetofootballmanager.com/

It's quite literally an encyclopedia on everything from the basics of the game, to some more advanced tactical stuff. If you don't know anything about soccer, you will likely need to read quite a bit of this info.

One suggestion for you if you get the game, is to start with a big team with lots of money (Real Madrid, Barcelona, PSG, Manchester United, etc) so you don't have to worry about finances. You can also download pre-made tactics that people have made, that's a good way to start out, just so you can get a feel for what sorts of things work tactically. You can tinker with the tactic to alter it a bit and see how things work, and then eventually make one yourself.

It's the most rewarding, frustrating, and fun simulation game I've ever played. Any other career mode you play after playing FM will be laughably shallow. Again, there is a steep learning curve, but it's worth it! There is also a great community here if you have questions!

If you haven't already, you can play the FM18 Demo for free on Steam. Great way to take it for a test drive.

Is there one attribute, that if it's not above a certain level, you will not sign the player not matter what?

Now I know tactics and playing style will play a big role in this.

I've looked at teamwork and work rate when I first started playing but have been leaning toward determination.

              Thoughts?

there has to be something special for me to consider people with less than 10 determination, less than 10 work rate, and/or less than 10 teamwork

Yeah, determination is one that I almost always look for at least 10+, when I'm looking for new players.

Not a numbered stat, but I always check the scout report to see how the player would handle big matches. I don't want any players who crack under pressure.

This and I try to avoid highly injury prone players(either checking injury history or if scouting report indicates). Stay clear of the Wilshere/Sturridge types.

Does anyone think FM will ever change the tactics to allow for one formation while in possession and another while defending?

You see more and more teams utilize different formations when in possession and defending.

Its one of the more requested things on their official forums for the last two years. Adding team shapes for in and out of possession. So I'm sure they will add it at some point. However, this would require a crap ton of work to be done on the match engine, with even more testing to make sure it works correctly. So I wouldn't expect something like this for FM19.

It pretty much already has this feature if you you think of it as Formation=defensive shape, Roles and player instructions = what your players do when you have the ball. This is what any of the good FM tactics guys out there will tell you when you're thinking about making your tactics.

Thinking about picking up a switch to get fm touch 18... anyone playing it on the switch? How many leagues can the switch run at one time? How many national teams are manageable (like is it the usual bigger countries? Or can you manage small countries like Cuba, Bermuda, etc etc)?

I don't know if Touch is changed at all for the switch, but on the regular Touch it's 3 leagues. Also I just checked, and you're not able to manage national teams, at least on the tablet version. YMMV on the Switch.
