Re: Any FM-related questions? Ask them here

The only countering tactic I've played regularly was in my AIK (Sweden) save when I faced better teams in European competition. What I did was set up a very defensive 3-5-2:

    ____ST_____ST____

    WM____CM______WM
    ____CDM____CDM___
    __CB____CB____CB
    _______GK________

I would tell my guys to sit deep, stay off a bit on defense, and hit long balls. It was mostly about surviving, and it let me win about 20% of the time, tie 40%, and lose 40%. That's OK given I was facing Barcelona, Chelsea, Real Madrid, etc.

My wide mids were set as defensive wingers.

This tactic allowed quite a few crosses, but I have some huge center backs, like 6'4", 6'6" and 6'8" and they would take care of a lot of it.

I find it's less what your formation is and more about having fast players up front and a team against you that is throwing a lot of players into attack.

If you're doing a full counter attack, the space between your midfield and attackers doesn't really matter. It's all about forcing the other team to settle for long shots then catching them up the field.

This and playing a high temp with direct passing and closing down a lot, even when not playing on counter. I've had more counter attacks on control with high tempo, closing down a lot and direct passing than I ever do playing on counter. That is what I did in Belarus and I scored almost every single goal on the counter. Also in lower leagues, pace and acceleration are the key stats for every player. If they are quick, the other stats don't matter as much. Because the majority of lower league players are very slow.

I'm totally in that boat right now too...I have both an X1 and a PS4, but 90% of my gametime lately has been FM. I have other games I want to play...but when I sit down to play, it's FM that comes a callin.

When accepting a new job, what do some of you do with the current coaching staff?

Keep, fire and hire, a bit of both?

I tend to keep everyone on and replace them as their contracts come up with better people. I only remove someone right away if their attributes for the staff role are really bad.

Depending on when I take over a club, I'm very meticulous with my staff. When I join mid-season, I'll normally keep most people on-board, and add a few new faces to the mix if I have the opportunity to fill out staff. Then during the first off-season I'm with a club(or in some countries winter break), I enter all of the current staff into my database for coaching/scouting/medical, and undergo a fairly thorough evaluation, I then decide the people I'd like to get rid of(normally the majority of them, it's not like I'm taking over good clubs), and attempt to find replacements, as soon as a moderately viable replacement is found I'll offer mutual termination and approach the new staff member. I normally either have them equal my contract, or sign them for 3 years, whichever is greater, then every third year, I re-evaluate my entire staff and compare it with what's available on the market. Basically during the first off-season, and every third or so off-season I spend approximately 2-3 hours and 10-14 in-game days putting together my staff.
