Re: ***The Official Arsenal Gunners" Thread***
I agree, I don't think we get one unless Djourou goes, but I think we need a CB nonetheless. I just don't think Djourou has the required quality we need, and as defensive lapses have killed this team the last two seasons, I don't want to be in a situation where Djourou is having to start big matches and we're letting in soft goals.
That's why I'd also like to see us sign a fullback to help avoid the situation we were in last year where TVM was on the left and a whole host of out-of-position players were on the right, but I don't see that happening either.
We're all set at striker and on the wing. If we signed a quality CM (preferably attacking minded) and a good defender (either CB or fullback) for depth, I think we'd have a team that could mount a serious title challenge. Now it's up to Wenger to make that happen.Comment

Gibbs is extremely injury prone, and I'm not sure Jenkinson is ready yet (though he did show flashes of his potential last season). That leaves us with two reliable, quality options. I agree Arsene won't sign a fullback, but I would still like him to.Comment

Re: ***The Official Arsenal Gunners" Thread***
I must say, signing Giroud makes me feel a little more confident that RVP will stay. It makes perfect sense for him to come in and sit behind RVP while getting accustomed to the team and the league, and Podolski of course could very well be used on the left instead of up top.
A few months ago if someone told me we'd sign two strikers, I would've said RVP is leaving. However, with these two, it makes sense that he stays.
Now, it could also mean that RVP leaves as Podolski could start up top immediately with Gervinho on the left. But I prefer not to think about that.

Also, looks like we're close to getting rid of Squillaci. We're going to let him go on a free despite having a year left on his deal. I'm alright with that. At least get his wages off the books.Comment

Re: ***The Official Arsenal Gunners" Thread***
either way it is setup nicely. question is if rvp stays, how long will the new contract be ? you have your possible future strikers here and now if they pan out really well, so do you take a short contract and see how things go?
i think no matter how it plays out, rvp will eventually be gone in the next couple of years.Comment

The fact is, we needed both signings anyway. If RVP resigns, then they'll be able to compliment him/fill in for him. And if he doesn't resign, well then at least we covered all our bases.Comment

Re: ***The Official Arsenal Gunners" Thread***
Chamakh is on his way out, so we need another striker. Plus, I see Podolski eventually starting on the left.
I see it as Wenger finally trying to give us some actual depth and showing RVP he won't have to play every single minute of every single game next year.
Now, could RVP leave? Yes. However, I don't think those signings are due to us knowing he isn't returning.Comment
