This myth of players being useless once they hit 30 is absurd.
RVP is 28. Just to throw it out there, Andrea Pirlo is 33. You lose things like speed when you're past 30, but not your skills. RVP's left foot will be just as deadly in four years as it is now. I want to see him at Arsenal until he's 34, not 30.
Forget this two year nonsense.Last edited by Krebstar; 07-02-2012, 08:29 AM.Comment

i agree with the "above 30" nonsense too. however i think you only make these kind of moves now if you are expecting for the "possibility" of not having rvp sometime in the near future. somehow i dont think its the club shopping him and more about him at least thinking about the idea of leaving.
either way i think arsenal is positioned very well for any kind of potential scenario, at least as long as these new guys can produce.Comment

And that is WITH our captain returning. Sure, they're nice insurance if he decides to not resign, but Arsenal weren't only going to go after those players if RVP wanted to leave or was strongly considering it.Comment

No, I think you also make these kinds of moves because you need a striker to spell RVP so he doesn't get worn down over the season, and a scorer who can slot over to the left side of the 4-3-3 and make it so RVP isn't forced to score all our goals again.

He hardly ever came off the field during a game, and rarely didn't start.Comment

I think the 30 year old policy is more because of the team self sustaining policy than anything else. The club wants to be able to make some money off of players before they lose all there value.
It doesn't matter who it is or how good they are playing, no club is going to pay a substantial sum for a 34 year old."The academic support at Ohio State, there is no way you can fail. Even if you're giving minimal effort there is no way you can fail."

lets look at other sports. good example is payton manning, production wise has not fallen off past 30 and yet he was still the prime target for every NFL team that did not need a qb. in the NFL most players cant play into their 30's because of how physical the sport is and how much physically they are falling off. only the elite can play into their 30's. there are also a ton of examples in MLB.
to say that a soccer player's worth is gone in their 30's is nonsense. you have to look at it completely from a production stand point. if that 34 year old is one of the top players at his position then age doesnt mean a thing at all.Comment

yeah but you also have to take in perspective the production that 34 year old player is doing.

Re: ***The Official Arsenal Gunners" Thread***
yeah but are you going to pay that kind of money for giroud to come in late game and maybe start a game every now and then depending on the schedule? how long do you think that is going to last ? i understand they need a scoring threat when rvp isnt on the pitch, but isnt this overreaching financially unless there was a possibility of some bigger long term plan ? unless they plan to run two strikers, it just doesnt make much sense to leave money on the bench like that.
The problem with this team is that the money we do leave sitting on the bench is utter trash. It's about time this team had actual depth.
You seem to be missing every single point anyone is making in here.Comment

NOT. GOOD.
I’ve thought long and hard about it, but I have decided not to extend my contract. You guys, the fans, have of course the right to disagree with my view and decision and I will always respect your opinions.Comment

What sounds really bad is how he came away from a meeting with Wenger and Gazidis feeling they don't share his ambition for the club. While we don't know what went on at that meeting, I'm guessing they told him the same things they've been telling the fans: "We do want to win trophies but we can't compete financially with the big clubs, we have to spend within our means, we're not looking for quality but superquality, we won't spend just to spend, etc."Comment

Re: ***The Official Arsenal Gunners" Thread***
Well the way RVP has handled this has caused me to lose a lot of respect for him. If he just wanted to leave, it would have been understandable, but this move of posting a statement on his website is strictly a ploy for self benefit - he is forcing a transfer. I get the impression that the club and Wenger had no idea this was coming, and RVP just went right over their heads. Now we won't get nearly as much money from the transfer because other clubs know for a fact he wants out. What a disaster.Comment

Re: ***The Official Arsenal Gunners" Thread***
The club has officially released a statement.
"We have to respect Robin's decision not to renew his contract. Robin has one year to run on his current contract and we are confident that he will fulfil his commitments to the Club. We are planning with ambition and confidence for next season with Arsenal's best interests in mind."
EDIT: Word is he completely blindsided the club by doing this. Also, that Gazidis is not on a holiday at all.
This is shaping up to be really, really ****ty.
Sad but possibly true point on Arseblog news:
It seems a real shame that Robin, who claims to love the club and care for the fans, has gone about this in such a disrespectful manner, and it looks as if the reason behind it is to force a move to a club that he couldn’t go to without a fight.
And I think we all know which club that is.
Happy Wednesday.Last edited by Krebstar; 07-04-2012, 05:35 PM.Comment
