        Re: The Beautiful Game Thread

I love how soccer provides me the opportunity to do some smack talking with my friends that I don't ever get to do, since my core group of friends is all MN sports fans.

There were 6 of us at Bdubs watching the hockey games last night, and the conversation switched to soccer for a while. At the table was a Tottenham fan (me), a Man U fan, an Everton fan, an Arsenal fan, and a Chelsea fan.

It was a good time, taking a break from being sports comrades, and ripping each other's teams for a while

No Altidore, not even on the bench for Sunderland, interesting choice. Joe Hart riding the pine for Man City too. Nice full stadium though, hard to ever tell which teams actually care about this cup, fans are all-in though.

          1-0 Sunderland in the 10th!

That could also be misconstrued as a problem of, ahem, climaxing early.

Absolutely fantastic article on how football has changed for young fans over here.

In the 1970s, football was rooted in the local community. In this extract from his new book, And the Sun Shines Now, Adrian Tempany charts how clubs lost touch with their fans

Great piece, so much of it resonates with me and my experiences. Especially this excerpt:

Daykin happily admits that the quality of football is much better now but, he says, "it was never about the football; it was a social process. When I went to Sunderland from 1987, I started standing at the front of the Fulwell End; then as I got a bit bigger, I'd move to the back, where there was an area known as the Cage, where all the bad lads went. When you were 16, 17 and you thought you were somebody, you'd stand in the Cage, and you thought, This is great! By the time you were 19, 20 you were too cool for the Cage, so you'd go to the Paddock, or stand a little bit away from the away fans, and be cynical and ironic. There was a natural progression."
I remember starting out in the Atyeo stand, before moving up to H block Atyeo. Then came the big step to the Eastend, standing with the "netters" and finally moving up to the back with the "bog lot", where all the chants and trouble is started from.

Bringing back standing would really help this issue, and props to the mighty Bristol City for being the first UK club to install safe standing seats, even if they are illegal.

I think the thing that sums it up best is Portsmouth's advert for junior season tickets:

Bayern Munich are up 2-0 15 minutes into their match today.

A win will mean that they win the league in late March. That's ridiculous.

I wonder if they will be able to get that reduced on appeal.

I always thought Neymar looked younger then 18 when they got him.
