I think he's kind of annoying at times, but let's at least listen before we panic.

That being said. My confidence in Fox and its coverage of the World Cup continues to dwindle.

Jeeze, you guys are harsh. He's not bad at all, especially considering how new he is to soccer. Imagine when he's even more comfortable with it. Passion is a good thing.

It's just a little tough to take after ESPN had both Ian Darke and Martin Tyler last World Cup.

Right, but how about going into it with an open mind instead of writing him off before you even hear him call a game?

It's just another one of those anti-American-soccer attitudes that bothers me. That [player/team/league/commentator/etc] sucks because he/it's not English/European.

no i think he just doesnt have the talent to be a commentator. nothing to do with nationality, league, race, whatever you want to claim it to be. lack of talent and average voice at best.

The Americans really do need their own iconic soccer pbp guy.

Most of the Americans I've heard have been pretty bad.

There are some good ones, mainly the guys who have risen to the national broadcast level. JP Dellacamera, Adrian Healey, Glenn Davis, Taylor Twellman, Brian Dunseth, Kyle Martino, John Strong, Arlo White. (That's not a ranking, just the order they popped into my head)

Pretty much all the regional guys, guys who cover just one MLS team on local broadcasts, are terrible, though.

Gus had I think 4 years to learn MMA, and he is still dreadful in that arena. My confidence in him adjusting(learning) soccer is low.

He worked the 2010 World Cup for ESPN Radio and the 1999 Women's World Cup Final.

You might be thinking of Dave O'Brien. He's a mostly baseball guy, but Disney put him on the 2006 World Cup to attempt to appeal to people who didn't watch soccer on the regular.

I like Gus Johnson when he's calling college basketball, and he at least is trying to immerse himself in the sport and really get to know it 5 years prior to the big World Cup gig so he won't go in cold. I'm optimistic, but I'd still much rather have Ian Darke as the lead commentator as I know he'll be fantastic, whereas Johnson only has the potential to be.

Also, it'll be interesting to see how the Fox in-house broadcast of the CL matches differs to the IMG feeds we usually get. If the commentary is worse, we at least might avoid the annoying 2 second delay.

I'm just burnt out on Gus Johnson and I realized he gets excited for everything. I rather have someone like JP Dellacamera to call the CL games on FOX, I enjoyed his PBP with the Red Bulls.
