Portland's a pretty good team to cheer for too. They're not great on the field right now, but the Timbers Army is just as good as the Emerald City Supporters (although I personally think they're better ).

We may not have big names like Dempsey and Yedlin, but we've got some talented attacking players, like Fanendo Adi (recent purchase from FC Copenhagen), Diego Valeri, Maxi Urruti, and Gaston "La Gata" Fernandez. The midfield and the defense... let's not talk about those.

That being said, he was looking for a team in the East. He could maybe get a feel for the league, and then jump on the NYCFC bandwagon. They're going to have David Villa when they start playing.

      Re: MLS Discussion Thread

Frankly, if I were to choose a team in the East, it would be Philly. I like the way they play and I like their players. Sons of Ben is a solid supporter's group as well.

I think part of the issue with outsiders finding Portland fun to watch is the lack of recognizable names. Valeri and friends are all solid players, but Nagbe isn't a USMNT player yet and none of the Argentinians you brought in are well known. The style of play is nice, and the potential is there though. If they would have signed Mix Diskerud in the offseason like was rumored, that would have been huge.

There's also the issue with your owner & coach being unlikeable, but only those who follow MLS already know that. I think Porter could be a great coach someday, but he seems kinda stubborn and unwilling to take responsibility for some of his team's failings.

Actually it looks like I'll be following Seattle since, as stated earlier, they have Yedlin and Dempsey. Also they play at Centurylink Field which I'm guessing is the loudest stadium by far... And I like their kit, the whole reason I didn't just pick the Red Bulls and be done was because I hate how the sponsor logo takes over their kit.
I'll also look at NYCFC when they start playing, I do like it that they have David Villa.

www.sounderatheart.com is a fantastic blog for following the Sounders. If you want some good twitter follows or like podcasts, I can give some recommendations as well.

This blog is good, I'll be keeping up with that.

Also looking at Sporting KC after doing some more roster research and finding out that they have Graham Zusi. They look like they might be a bubble team though, one that keeps looking like it's the best and then coming short at the end of the season a lot.

I think I will follow both teams and see who I like more, but I'm leaning on Sounders because of the fans and the fact that they have the best stadium.

My suggestion: just watch any and all MLS games you can get your eyeballs on. Eventually, your heart will pull you towards one team. Much more organic/better way of falling in love with a team than just picking one, IMO.

Is there a team that "plays like" the Germans? I think that's the best way I could fall in love with a team, because I already have the love for the Germans in me.

Yeah. Problem with the MLS is it is so poorly marketed, and there is little to no reaction/context given on TV before and after the matches, which makes it hard to hold interest from week to week throughout the season. I feel like I get more in-depth coverage of Ligue 1 and Serie A on BeinSport than anything MLS related on ESPN or NBC.

For example, the Sounders home matches look amazing on TV, but after the final whistle blows, it's like someone pulls a plug and the networks are in a hurry to switch to bass fishing, or whatever. If they gave 10% the attention they give to the Prem league, it might go a long way to building up a consistent fan base.

The streaming service MLS Live where you can watch every single game recently dropped from 80 bucks to 31.99. I went ahead and bought it, and frequently watch games on my TV with my chromecast. Works great, and now I've gotten the hang of the league.

I'd recommend it, the quality is great and the price is quite reasonable.

The MLS should be plastering its name (and the faces of the USMNT) everywhere right now. There's no better time to grow the leagues fan base than right now fresh off of an exciting World Cup. I just don't get it. ESPN rarely even has commercials for the MLS game of the week they show. Put a picture of Dempsey & Yedlin on a poster that says "Sounders vs (insert team name) on ESPN2" and people would tune in. More than they're getting now anyways.

There's no excuse. I guarantee most of the people who followed the USMNT throughout the World Cup have no idea what team Michael Bradley plays for, or most of the other players for that matter.

I'd be willing to bet many don't even know Canada has a franchise.

Despite the lack of advertising, the Sounders-Timbers game on ESPN2 last weekend drew nearly half a million viewers.

I believe that was on the night of the World Cup final. They mentioned it quite a bit during the final, so I'm not too surprised it did okay. Soccer fans will watch soccer if they know it's going to be on, and there are actually a ton of soccer fans in America. Hell, I was watching beach soccer a little while back. Shows how nuts I am.
