In a rather brief nutshell, the club was bought by Malaysian businessman Vincent Tan, who subsequently changed the clubs colours from Cardiff's famous blue to the red they wear now, as well as changing the clubs' crest. He did this after promising not to, and the only reason he gave was that red is lucky in Malaysia.

That's the Premier League for you these days. Every club is desperate for the massive pay day and ignoring the fan base. See Hull City as another example. The TV money is just absurd and is driving ticket prices up (only my opinion that).

I get that people were mad that they did that, but how did they "sell their soul and history to get here"? Red colors and a new crest didn't get them promoted. Red colors and a new crest didn't beat City today.

But what did get them promoted?

The money of a businessman who walked all over the club's identity and like too many foreign owners, simply treats a football club as an idle plaything.

To quote an entry entitled "The Day The Bluebirds Died":

To me, a football club is so much more than just the players who happen to pull on the shirt at any one time. If you don’t believe in the identity of your club and simply enjoy success, everyone in the world might as well support Barcelona.

I'm not trying to get at you here Dayman so please don't take it that way!

I think what myself and UK0wnag3 are feeling is very much a European concept at the moment. The whole social aspect of soccer has very much changed over the past decade with rich owners (see Chelsea, Man City, PSG and Monaco for high profile cases) who, in the eyes of many soccer fans here, use their clubs as playthings and the history and tradition of a football club is thrown away.

There is a movement of sorts that has sprung up called Against Modern Football because of this and this article explains it pretty well:

The first, and easiest to get to grips with, addresses issues related to economics and governance – anger about high ticket prices, about clubs being allowed to change name, move stadium or, most recently in the case of Coventry City, move to another town entirely.

The second strand encompasses a more cultural set of issues – the sterilisation of atmosphere at top-level stadiums, the commodification of fan culture, the apparent rejection of traditional supporters in favour of what are contemptuously referred to as “tourists”.

A salary cap could solve that problem.

As much as I agree with this, I think UEFA (I think they would be the ones to enforce it), wouldn't be able to get it through. There is far too much money in the game and it wouldn't surprise me to see clubs start a new organisation and create a European league.

This has been put forward before (I think late 1990's), until UEFA restructured the Champions League in order to appease those clubs.

First of all, thank you Anners for being able to communicate my own thoughts better than I could.

With the amount of TV money in the game, a salary cap seems to be a million miles away at this point.

There is a worrying disconnect between some fans and the game right now. Even with the constant increase of player salaries, the diminishing loyalty of players, et al, it was always thought the clubs would ultimately belong to the fans. But with cases such as Portsmouth and their near extinction, and the farce that is happening at Coventry, it's clear that isn't the case any more.

As a fellow Packer fan(I assume, I dare never venture into the NFL Forums), it'd be the same as the Packers changing their name, colors and logos because a new owner came in(and yes, I realize the near impossibility of that). I really don't think I could support them the same if they did that. (Since the NFL doesn't have P/R it's hard to put in the "buying a PL spot")

Essentially the same thing that the NJ Nets went through(minus their absolute need for a rebrand/new stadium/etc)

It's just all very, unclean feeling.

I don't know. I guess if my team hadn't been in the top flight in 51 years I wouldn't really care if they changed their colors to purple and orange and their crest became a dragon pooping on a bluebird just so long as it eventually got me what it got Cardiff, Premier League football.

Well, "wouldn't really care" is understating it. I'd care, I wouldn't be happy about it when it happened. But if it did eventually get me to the Prem, I'd make peace with it and be happy about the club because to me being in the top flight is far more important.

I guess what I'm saying is I get why it would make people mad, really I do, but to me the ends justify the means. I can see how it might not for others, though.
