The funniest thing in the article I read about it was that Tuchel was annoyed that Todd wanted to sign Ronaldo and Tuchel had to explain why he didn't.

Then they signed Thrift Store Ronaldo and threw the cursed 9 on him.

Tedesco is out at Leipzig too.

That lasted all of 9 months.

Dropping 300 million in the summer window to sack him first week in September is just bananas.

All that work in the offseason. All those days coming in to the office. All that planning and development. And that's it? Very very stupid.

Boehly should've taken a page out of the Glazer playbook. If you're not gonna keep the manager, you don't "allow the funds to be used" or only spend it on 3rd-choice targets to keep the veneer of backing the manager AND THEN you sack him.

                    ****ing rookie.

Potter to Chelsea is looking likely.

I mean, I’d say at this point this isn’t even an issue.

Tuchel and Potter both play very similar systems, so the personnel purchases would be similar.

Given how quickly all this has happened, I’d say it’s pretty obvious they were in contact with Potter a while ago.

But what I'd say is the issue is how the ownership was seemingly trying to make transfer decisions regardless of the manager. They were, apparently, set to sign Ronaldo but Tuchel didn't want him at all.

Signing Ronaldo would have been the wrong move, but making transfer decisions regardless of manager is how its supposed to work anyway. If you have a proper DoF (we don't, obviously), then transfers are often made with a pre-laid plan that takes into account potential new coaches.

Putting all your eggs into one basket is bound to backfire eventually, you can't really make transfers under the assumption your manager will be there for years and years.

Very true, but my 'regardless of the manager' was more of a, signing a player with zero thought or understanding of how your manager will utilize them and not caring, because really you're only doing it as a commercial venture.

I get it, Ronaldo is a mobile siege weapon (credit to a Guardian writer) you place near or in front of the box and he'll score goals, but whatever.

I'd argue that some teams do make signings thinking their manager will be there for a few years, at minimum—a team like Brighton comes to mind, actually. Chelsea? Obviously not, and the same goes for other clubs, especially large clubs. Arsenal were signing players while Emery was around not because he could utilize them well, but because they were available, which was stupid and set the club back several years.

I'd say a successful approach is a mixture—you don't sign a player your current manager will end up freezing out in a year but you also don't give them everything they want, and you focus on the long-term building and value of the squad. You certainly don't buy Ronaldo.
