Last of decisiveness in the final third and lost concentration on the key Dutch chances. Sucks because this Dutch team is not good.

I know right. Our midfield bossed another midfield that had Frenkie, de Room, and Koopeminers.

Not too mention a 6'8 keeper.

Literally that was like the perfect scenario for them, the few times our players decided to just play through we created the only dangerous chances we had all game

Because they are tenacious. They are great at winning possession.

But I wouldn't say we bossed their midfield when the Dutch seemed content to let us dominate possession and just wait for the inevitable miscue and then a launch a counterattack against an undisciplined defense.

We are great at winning possession. We are not good at creating good goal scoring opportunities. "Ball skills" is such a large umbrella term that both of those may fall under it.

Going in to the WC, the Round of 16 was as far as I expected the US to go. I wasn't going to be stunned if they didn't get out of their group but I would have been shocked to see them in the Quarterfinals.

Therefore, I cannot honestly say that I'm disappointed or that they underperformed. They didn't play above the line or below it.

However, today's exit was disappointing in that they had some real chances to seize the moment and they didn't. 58% possession to boot. It just wasn't to be.

I had a different reading. Option 1 was always thru balls. They consistently tried that, but often the deliveries weren't great and it forced the recipient out wide.

We had 2 great opportunities that you simply have to capitalize on if you hope to beat good teams. The first was Pulisic in the second minute, the other was the result of a blind pass back to the GK that damn near gave us an open goal but a heavy touch killed it. And that kind of thing happened far too often where a promising attack was halted by a poor touch or poorly placed pass.

The Dutch team is like the gatekeeper or bridge to the top clubs. They aren't as good as those clubs, but they are a class above the rest of the field.

Honestly, nothing from the group stage suggested they would do anything in the knockout. The US team is rather mediocre. But i guess it's a success to actually qualify and get out of the group this year. Next World Cup, I've no clue what success is. They don't have to qualify, but I'm not sure if that's a positive or negative.

Dutch have always fielded good teams over the years, even if this one wasn’t as good at the others, which isn’t a bad thing.

US was always going to need everything to break their way and to capitalize on mistakes. That was pretty much going to be the only thing that kept them around long enough in this tournament.

Have folks started the “Let Marsch coach in ‘26!” Train yet or is that coming later?

That’s not “ball skills” even though that term doesn’t exist in soccer. The lack of decisiveness in the final third isn’t a physical thing, it’s a mental trait. We created some chances, especially early because of our midfield was able to hold onto possession. Anyone that has suffered through USMNT midfields of the past with guys know how much better this current one is which is crazy because they’re so young.

They beat us in transition and were clinical in front of goal (minus the Dumfries goal). Our midfield was the reason why we were able to get out of the group. It’s not even debatable. English fans were slandering Declan Rice and Bellingham, 2 players that are going to move for ~200 mil combined next summer.

We also like Brahv and Imtellin… said, played into their best strength but they have a legend coaching and we have Berhalter. Can’t underestimate that.!

Woke up late and didn't watch, but glancing at box scores, it looks like we handily won possession and had more shots on goal, but couldn't finish since we don't have a dominant goal scorer. Oh well. Definitely an improvement from our last WC loss when Belgium won possession like 70-30 and had 40 shot attempts or whatever it was.

The thing about possession, though, is that it doesn't really mean a damn thing. When some of the best managers in the world will happily cede possession and dominate, I don't believe there's such a thing as 'winning' possession. It's the definition of an antiquated statistic in the sport.

I like that 2014 team more than this one. That one felt like they could at least overachieve and do something wild. This one feels more consistent (maybe) but also flat.

Or maybe I just liked that World Cup more than this one, and my fandom was at a higher level idk.

Exactly this. I don’t want to hate on the kid but he was asked if the goal against Iran was his “World Cup moment” and he replied that he hopes to have a bigger one.

Well that was it. Hopes and dreams of the entire nation in a 1 v 1 minutes into the match and we don’t convert. Such a different game if we score there and this was a very beatable Dutch squad.

                                Oh well.
