It's more to do with the structure of the deal. Celtic want £25m, we finally hit that number, but they want more upfront, fewer bonuses, etc. Also, apparently their negotiator is known to drag things out—no idea if that's true, but they know they can drag it out.
In terms of our backroom doing these deals, I'm giving them a few windows to prove themselves. Could we throw the entire £25m at Celtic now? Yes, but that limits what else we can do this window.
The most Arsenal thing ever is only having £45m to spend this window because our owner refuses to put money into the club—he only removes it. Also, the club allowed commercial revenue to continue to slip while Gazidis was at the club. Yes, we make money, but we've been making less recently.
I think it's far too easy to see what's happening this window with Arsenal and say it's the same as always. We finally seem to have an actual plan, but the issue is we're financially restricted in a time when we should not be—but we are.
The thing to remember when an Arsenal supporter says that we can't spend as much money as other clubs—we're not saying we literally can not, we're saying we know that we will not due to our owner and the lack of ambitions of that owner. We know the club should have more than £45m to spend this window, but the reality is that it's all we have to spend this window.
My point is that it's too early to judge Raul (DoF) and Edu (Technical Director) as of right now because they're trying to have the best window possible with what they're being given. It's not too early to judge our ownership—which is ****.
I still think land Tierney and Saliba (although he doesn't' arrive until 2020).
