Contract question

This doesn't have to do with lack of funds so please keep reading. How come if I offer a player X amount of years for a contract, an additional year gets added on when I look at the player salaries list? Is it the remaining year he had on his old contract?

I would say that would be what's happening because if you are resigning someone before their contract is up you are signing them to an extension, not just resigning to a completely new contract that voids out the current contract.
