ALL MADDEN SLIDERS FOR XBOX 360

I started to post some sliders here, then thought about it...

Is it possible to simulate NFL stats on XBOX 360 on All Madden?

What I mean to ask is...if we had enough XBOX 360 game stats and we knew the NFL averages for the various offensive and defensive categories...could we create a slider set that would simulate the NFL averages? If so, then I guess we could call that a good slider set in terms of statistics.

I guess the problem is game realism versus statistical realism. If we did come up with sliders that, on the whole, simulated league average, would it make the games too goofy?

Is there enough interest in doing this if we could? We used to do this with previous years maddens, but I'm not sure about the XBOX 360.

I think the theory works like this...if you created a team (which you can't) that had an average offense that was exactly as good as its defense, and you played a hundred games, and tweaked the sliders so that the average of all those games equaled the average in the NFL, those would be good sliders, right?

Re: ALL MADDEN SLIDERS FOR XBOX 360

In case this is doable, I averaged some stats from NFL.com's sortable stat pages (for this year only).

Here are the league averages for each of the major offensive and defensive categories, using excel and a hand calculator (insomnia).

(The "per Game" notation is "per game per team." I.E. this number multiplied by two will give you the result for both teams).

PASSING
Attempts per Game: 32.16
Completion Percentage: 59.61
Yards per Game: 207.52
Touchdowns per Game: 1.19
Interceptions per Game: 0.90
Sacks per Game: 2.42

RUSHING
Attempts per Game: 27.99
Yards per Game: 109.28
Yards per Attempt: 3.85
Touchdowns per Game: 0.80

KICKOFF
Kickoffs per Game: 4.65
Average Kickoff Length: 65.34 yards
Touchbacks per Game: 0.78
Statistical Chance of Kicking Off a Touchback: 17.00%
Kick Return Average: 22.98 yards
Kicks Returned for a Touchdown per Game: 0.02
Statistical Chance of Returning a Kickoff for a Touchdown: 0.43%

PUNTING
Punts per Game: 4.93
Punts Blocked per Game: 0.01
Statistical Chance of Blocking a Punt: 0.30%
Average Gross Punt Length: 44.54 yards
Average Net Punt Length: 37.84 yards
Average Yards per Punt Return: 6.70
Punts Returned for a Touchdown per Game: 0.02
Statistical Chance of Returning a Punt for a Touchdown: 0.20%

FIELD GOALS
Average Length of Successful Long Field Goal Attempt: 44.88 yards
Longest Field Goal: 54.00 yards

GENERAL
Plays per Game: 60.15
Offensive Yards per Game: 316.80
Points Scored per Game: 19.71

Now, there are some problems with trying to simulate NFL stats in Madden. They've been discussed in previous years.

But the first question is...do slider settings affect non-played games in a franchise? I.E., do sliders affect games that the CPU plays against the CPU that are done with only calculations and no games played (simmed games)?

I've heard yes and no to this question. Regardless, if one hundred guys (for example) played one hundred games (for example) with an offense whose ability is equal to the defense against which its playing, and we tweaked the sliders so that the average of those games roughly equaled these, then that would be cool. (E.G. a 99 offense versus a 99 defense, or a 75 offense versus a 75 defense...better yet if you could create a "middle of the road" team with everyone having equivalent statistics at their postions).

In any event, I hope these stats are at least interesting to read, or are helpful in aligning your own sliders.

Re: ALL MADDEN SLIDERS FOR XBOX 360

What I will do is sim a few franchises to Week Five. Using the middle ranked teams for each major category, I'll post the averages (or close to the averages) in Madden 2007, then compare them to the real NFL stats.

Once I find which teams rank in the average position for each stat, I can try and use those teams in play. I will then try and create a slider set (based on my playing ability) that returns results for each game that match the averages from the simmed franchise games.

For example, let's say the Seattle Seahawks have rank 15th in Passing Defense from our franchise stat sets. Let's also say that the Pittsburgh Steelers rank 15th in Passing Offense from our franchise stat sets. In theory, if I play these teams against each other several times, and tweak the slider sets so that the results of the games begin to match the NFL averages, then I will be comfortable that those slider settings are good.

This can be done for each of the major offensive and defensive statistical categories. No jokes about having too much time on my hands...I do!

If you would like to help, please post! The more people that do this, the more confident the averages will be.

FRANCHISE SET ONE

Here's what I did.

I simmed an entire season (16 games). Instead of averaging all of the statistics for a given category, I selected the teams ranked 15th, 16th, 17th, and 18th in the league for each category. Then I averaged their stats for each category. I will use these to estimate an average of league performance in Madden 2007 for XBOX 360.

I will repeat this whole process five times, then average it all out. At the end, I will list each of the teams that most often wound up in the middle rankings of the league for each stat category. I will also post the highest and lowest ranges for each category.

MADDEN NFL 2007 LEAGUE AVERAGES PER GAME (SET ONE)

Offense
Total Offense per Game: 328.12 yards
Passing Yards per Game: 189.09
Rushing Yards per Game: 147.93
Points Scored per Game: 23.62
Sacks Allowed per Game: 2.73
Completion Percentage: 58.75
Yards per Carry: 4.37
Interceptions Thrown Per Game: 0.43

Defense
Total Yards per Game: 323.06
Passing Yards per Game: 206.59
Rushing Yards per Game: 117.98
Points per Game: 22.65
Sacks: 2.79
Interceptions: 0.9

A word about reading these statistics. Notice that the defensive numbers do not match the offensive numbers. That would only happen if you averaged the stats for all 32 teams in the league. Instead, what I did was average the stats for the teams ranking in the middle of the league.

In the end, these numbers should be helpful for aligning your played game stats (and therefore sliders) to match actual league performance.
