And if said receiver isn't good enough or aware enough to know, the coach should be able to tell him "run that 5 yard out 7 out". As it is, we are unable to tell the receiver to do so.

Has anyone else notice this?
I've noticed this too. It happens to me quite frequently when I play with my Titans. Bennett and Givens will often run their curl routes past the first down marker, but when I throw the past, they run back past the marker to catch the ball, and I end up losing my first down. I wish they'd just stop at the marker and catch the ball instead of running back towards it like that.

Yet we see it all the time in the real games.
"Why the f#$% did he run a 6 yard out when the first down was 8 yards away!!"

Yet a top-flight reciever so often makes the catch right at the marker.

Maybe because thats the route he's supposed to run ? The defense has a much easier job if they dont have to consider a shorter pass.

Indeed.

As much as certain announcers may question it, it's probably planned that way with the idea that the receiver can break a tackle and get the extra 2 yards.

And yet players who don't have good field awareness still don't do this. This is not a new problem irl. I can't tell you how many times in my coaching career I was yelling "depth, depth" to my receivers to get proper depth on their routes, and know down and distance on whatever situations they may be in. Just because a coach tells a player to get proper depth on a given play does not mean they will do it. Some players just don't have a feel for it, and some players simply forget to do the little things in the heat of the battle.
